Spurs Ladies hosted Long
Lane and lost out to the odd goal in five, but rued missed opportunities
which left them frustrated at the final result.
Rosi Webb took an early
shot on goal, which was easily saved by the Long Lane keeper, then a
ball from Faye Callaway to Jessie Richards, saw the Spurs striker
produce a quality finish with a goal as the ball hit the right hand
corner of the net.
Long Lane hit back
straight away, with a long shot making it 1-1, when it beat Lisa
McCabe in the Tottenham goal.
Kerry Daniells took a
throw and laid it off to Jess, who knocked it onto Faye, but her
effort hit the side netting. Shortly after, a free-kick was
awarded to Long Lane, who capitalised on the set-piece to make it
2-1.The second
half started as the first finished with a free kick to Long Lane,
which they scored from to put them further ahead.
Spurs Ladies were now
chasing the game and a ball from Mel Berry to Gill Blackmore was
moved on to Jenny Curtis, who fired in a shot which was saved by the
keeper.
Another free kick was
won by Long Lane and the dead ball situations were giving Tottenham
problems, but this one sailed over the bar. Spurs hit back
with a good cross from Jess into the danger area, which saw the ball
kicked over the bar. The resulting Tottenham corner went
straight into the hands of the keeper.
Samrawit Bereket came on
for Jenny and immediately ran the ball down the line, before
knocking it Jess, who crossed for Rosi to steal in, but she tapped
her shot wide. A good one-two between Jess and Samrawit ended
with the ball going off for a corner. From the corner, it fell
to Kat Clifton, who took a shot from 35 yards out and it flew in to
bring the score-line back to 3-2.
Some good play between
Jess and Samrawit down the wing left Jess making an excellent, well
placed cross which was met by Rosi's head, but the ball went wide of
the mark. A free kick to Spurs was played in, but easily saved
by the keeper and a corner shortly afterwards was knocked wide as
the Tottenham side pushed for an equaliser.
However, it was to no
avail and at the final whistle, the team were left knowing that
having created so many chances, they must learn to convert a higher
percentage to start gathering points again.

Spurs Ladies started 2008
with a welcome 2-1 win over a strong London Colney side, but it could
have been so much more.
The home side missed a
string of golden chances to add to their goal tally in this match, with
some neat passing, which opened the Colney defence on the flanks.
The first twenty minutes
were a tight affair, with neither side dominating, although Spurs had
the majority of the possession. Then, halfway through the half, London
Colney broke away and the referee ignored a suspiciously offside
forward, who went on to net the opening goal.
This gave them the
impetus in the game and the left sided midfielder hit a 25 yard shot
against the crossbar and Lacey Amato was called upon to acrobatically
tip a shot over the bar. Just before the interval, Hannah Charman
played a long ball over the top of the visitor's defence and Rosi Webb
ran onto it, again looking offside, but took her time before setting
herself to smash the ball past the keeper to make it 1-1.
Turning around level,
Tottenham had the best of the chances in the second half. Clare
Singh was making good ground down the right and Samrawit Bereket on the
left, producing a number of dangerous crosses into the area. Clare
put a great ball across the six yard box, which Rosi was just unable to
reach and Samrawit ran in to meet another ball in from the right, but
got under her shot to lift it over the bar from close range.
Lacey had to be on here
toes at the other end and pushed a high shot from a free-kick over the
top
Clare had a shot
deflected just wide, while substitute Jessie Richards brought some fresh
legs to the attack, which stretched the visiting defence. One run
through the middle of the back four saw her slide a shot inches wide of
the right hand upright, while two more shots were stopped by the keeper.
Faye Callaway had a header scrambled wide by the goalie too.
Substitute Hayley Graham replaced Clare and she continued the good work
on the right wing, providing chances for Samrawit and Jessie.
When it looked as though
a draw was going to be the end result, Samrawit made a mazy run into the
London Colney half, beating several players skilfully. On and on
she ran, eventually getting into the area, where she had a shot blocked
and taking the rebound, she shot as Kat jumped over the ball and it beat
the keeper to make it 2-1. The Spurs side defended solidly in the
final ten minutes to maintain the inning scoreline.
The heavy nature of the
pitch had not helped the passing football the ladies like to play, but
they had make a good job of their performance, but must make sure they
finish the chances that come their way in future.

London County Cup - Quarter
final |
|
Spurs met
local rivals Haringey Borough in the quarter final of the London FA
Women’s Cup on Sunday for a place in the semi-finals against National
Southern Division side, Millwall Lionesses.
The game,
played in a strong, but good spirit, proved to be one of many twists and
turns.
The
opening stages were very much with Haringey and in the 17th minute the
defence Spurs were caught flat footed as a Haringey forward raced
through and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Lisa McCabe. Four minutes
later, Spurs found themselves 2-0 down in similar circumstances when a
Haringey player raced through the centre of the Spurs defence.
Spurs
started to settle and were unlucky not to grab a goal back in the 25th
minute when a Jessie Richard’s shot hit the underside of the bar before
being scrambled clear by the Haringey defence.
With
half time approaching, Spurs hit a magical spell with three goals in a
six minute period. In the 41st minute, Rosi Webb
created space for herself on the edge of the Haringey box to drill home
a right footed drive. Less than than minutes later, a through ball
from Rosi Webb saw Jessie Richards' pace outstrip the Haringey centre
backs to square the tie. In the second minute of time added on, a
neat interchange on Spurs right, followed by a low cross from Claire
Singh, saw Spurs take the lead and Rosi Webb drove the ball home at the
far post.
Haringey started the second half brightly, but it was Spurs who had the
best of the early opportunities including a Faye Callaway left foot shot
that hit the bar. However, it was Haringey that levelled the
scores from a free kick on the edge of Spurs area in the 59th minute.
In the
remaining 30 minutes, both sides went close and were indebted to their
goalkeepers for good blocks/saves for no further goals being added to
the score.
Extra
time saw both sides desperately seeking that elusive winner and it was
Haringey who took the lead with three minutes remaining, when a corner
was headed home just underneath the Spurs bar. In the closing
minutes Spurs Ladies battled hard to regain parity, but it was Haringey
who progress to the semi-final.

Spurs Ladies put last weeks
narrow County Cup defeat behind them and focused on their game as they
travelled to Horley Town in the league.
The Ladies started off well,
with Kat Clifton setting up Rosi Webb, but she was ruled offside.
The first THLFC corner
was taken by Clare Singh, who swung it in, but it was safely taken in
the keeper's hands. Tottenham broke through numerous times but couldn't
convert the openings. However, when Dom Clarke squared the ball to
Kat, she dinked it onto the waiting Rosi, who beat the offside trap this
time to make it 1-0.
With no further scoring, the teams went into the second half and within
57 seconds got their second goal. Mel Berry ran through the
midfield and although she is brought down, THLFC take the advantage and
Rosi scored her second goal.
Horley retaliated by
making an attack and Lacey Amato was called into action and she made a
lovely save.
After some good football, Dom laid the ball off to Jessie Richards, who
knocks it on for Rosi to convert her hat-trick goal that put Spurs 3-0
ahead.
18 minutes into the second half, Jess seized on a loose ball to make a
run and then unleashed a shot that saw the ball run under the goal
keeper to extend the lead further.
The home team were
awarded a free kick which lead to a scramble in the box, but Mel knocked
it out. However, the ball was deflected off a Horley Town player
into the net, but Spurs breathed a sigh of relief when the goal was
disallowed with the attacking player being given off-side.
THLFC take the warning
and tighten up in all departments, before settling once more and playing
their football. The Ladies were soon rewarded with their fifth
goal, which was taken sweetly from the right side of the area by Faye
Callaway to wrap up the scoring at 5-0; a result that puts THLFC in
third position in the table.

Spurs Ladies were at home to
10-man Ebbsfleet this week and rapidly took advantage with some good
wide play.
Ebbsfleet were awarded
the first free kick of the match, but they knocked it long and it found
a player offside.
The next free kick went Tottenham's way and it reached the Ebbsfleet
area, where it was easily cleared by their defence. The visitors broke
away and they put the ball in the air in the air, but Athena Yennaris
got her head to it, not once, but twice clearing it away from the Spurs
area.
The play continued and it was a battle of the midfields, with Tottenham
making hard work of it. Spurs were awarded another free-kick and Dom
Clarke launched it into the box. The ball skimmed off Kelly
Herrett's head into the path of Clare, who lays it off to Rosi Webb to
score and make it 1-0.
Ebbsfleet are soon awarded a free kick for pushing some 25 yards out
from goal. With good communication from the Spurs keeper Lacey
Amato and a strong two man well, it was blocked well. Spurs latch on
to the ball, to play it down the wings, where Rosi crosses it to Jessie
Richards and her volley is just wide of the target.
The first half finishes with a warning from Ebbsfleet, as they break and
go past two Spurs players, but the ball is cleared away by Gill
Blackmore.
Into the second half, Mel Berry played a beautiful through ball to Rosi,
who is one to one with the keeper, but hits it straight at the goalie.
Ebbsfleet are growing with confidence and are playing good football,
with the Ebbsfleet forward pressing onto our goal, she lets off a fierce
shot and at the same time, Lacey rushed out and clashed with her, but
the ball went into the net. But there was a twist and a bit of
luck, as the goal was ruled out by the referee for a marginal offside.
Spurs take a deep breath and a lovely ball from Faye sets up Rosi, who
listened to her coaches and now believes in her own ability, to calmly
put the ball into the back of the net and put Spurs into a 2-0 lead.
Tottenham were
immediately pushing on again and Claire Singh, who has been impressive,
twists her knee when challenged, needing to be replaced by Jenny Curtis.
Good play by the ladies and could this be Rosi's hat-trick ? Well
the keeper didn't think so, as she grabbed hold of Rosi's leg and is
literally dragging her down. "Penalty" decided the ref.
What's this ? Is it a steam train ? No, it's Mel, who claims
the penalty and cool as a cucumber, she places the ball and deceives the
keeper with a low well taken shot and its 3-0.
Spurs are playing the
ball out from their back neatly, when Athena gets tackled - she is down;
the ref gives the advantage; the ball is won back by Ebbsfleet, we go in
strong; the ref says foul and give a free-kick on the edge of the Spurs
box. Again, there is good communication from Lacey to her defence
and the shot is taken and cleared away by Gill.
It was midfielder Gill who played a through ball to Rosi, who will not
be dragged down again and puts a lovely shot into the next to give
Tottenham 4-0 margin and to complete her hat-trick this time.
Jessie makes a lonesome run down the left, she goes round two players
and holds to ball while the support gets into the box and then she lays
it off to Rosi. The keeper saves, but Samarwit is there for the
second ball, hitting her shot just wide.
A well deserved win. Well done ladies and keep up the hard work.

Spurs Ladies visited top of
the table Acton Sports Club and can feel hard done by that they did not
earn at least a draw in an evenly contested match.
A tense game, with both sides
having equal possession, saw Acton play the long ball game,
making it a bit of a ping pong match, but Tottenham got the ball
down and produced an effort that hit the bar just before half
time.
Second half was much of the
same and with both sides having penalty shouts denied, it looked
as though the game might end goal-less.
With about five minutes
remaining, another long ball was played in on the Spurs defence
and Acton got lucky to get a goal. Tottenham changed the
formation to go with three at the back and a break lead to a
shooting chance, but our player was brought down in the area,
but no penalty was awarded by the referee.
From start to finish, each
and every Spurs player out on the pitch today played to win this
game. The ladies can hold their heads high as they played well
and the result is not fair reflection of their efforts, when
they should have got a point from this game.

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies
overcame the adversity of a player being sent off and some dubious
decisions to earn a point against a physical London Colney side, who,
for the second time this season, failed to better a resilient Spurs
team.
Spurs welcomed back goalkeeper Laura May, who made an unexpected
appearance due to a goalkeeping crisis, but it was good to see her back
between the sticks. We knew we were in for a hard game and within 60
seconds, the hosts had taken the lead, but Tottenham immediately reacted
with some pressure on the home goal, however, the first of some
questionable decisions was given and London Colney were awarded a free
kick.
Tottenham broke away and get their first free-kick of the match, which
is played into the path of Faye Callaway, who lays it off to Rosi Webb,
whose header for goal is safely caught by the keeper. Kat Clifton
was next to break through the middle of the London Colney defence, like
a knife going through butter and she laid a beautiful ball on for Rosi,
but the striker knocked her shot wide of the target.
The defence settled well and Athena Yennaris sprayed the ball wide to
Clare Singh, who passed it to Kat. Producing a beautiful cross,
the ball went in to Rosi, who finished to make it 1-1.
Mel Berry was battling well in the middle of the park and won a ball in
a tackle, but is brought down and has the back of her calf stamped on,
but surprisingly nothing was given. A Tottenham throw-in saw Rosi
play the ball to Kat, who knocked it wide to Clare. The winger's
ball across the box was inviting, but our incoming runners just couldn't
get a foot to it.
Another chance was started off by Kat again, as she once more linked
with Clare, who again crossed it in and Rosi's effort was going wide,
but this time Faye was waiting and her shot went wide too. With
the game moving to the other end, we had a number of players in our box,
where there was a scramble and although the ball was cleared away, the
loose ball was fired back in and it was 2-1 to London Colney.
In the second half, Spurs had to battle up the slope and that was not
all, as it was frustrating when, almost every time our players were in
on goal, the opponents dug out called for off side and seconds later,
the referee's assistant's flag coincidentally raised and the whistle was
blown.
Things got worse, when Mel went in for a tackle and got the ball, but
the London Colney player went down and the ref brought the book out and
as it was Mel's second yellow, she was sent off. Undeterred, the
girls rallied together and launched attack after attack, despite their
reduced numbers, but the offside flag was regularly in evidence to stop
any threat to the Colney goal. Samrawit Bereket came on to add fresh
legs, but within minutes they were taken from under her, then Athena was
about to play the ball out of defence, when she is tackled two footed
and while the foul is given, there is no booking, which seems little
lenient compared to Mel's second caution.
Spurs concentrated on playing their football, as they have done all
season and break again. This time, there is no question of offside
and our substitute rounds two players and keeps her cool as the keeper
makes a hasty rush out. Taking the ball around the stranded
keeper, Samrawit slotted the ball neatly into the back of the net to
equalise at 2-2.
Once again the girls can only be praised for maintaining their dignity
and should be proud, as they showed they are a team who can gain
strength from each other and they dug deep when the chips were down to
secure a more than well-deserved point.

A good win was the
result of the best performance of the season from the First Team as
they saw off Woking 5-1 at Fred Knights.
The first Spurs attack
started with Toni Munro throwing out to Mel Berry, who puts the ball
into the path of Clare Singh. The winger's neat cross into the
box unfortunately would not land kindly for the oncoming Jessie
Richards. Spurs got their first warning from a Woking corner,
which was uniquely cleared by the back of Dom Clarke's head keeping
the score line at 0-0.
Tottenham's first corner
was headed away by Woking, but Jenny Curtis was waiting to take a
shot and although this was knocked away, Clare was on hand to neatly
slot the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Spurs continued to
attack when Rosi Webb hit the ball on the volley and the Woking
keeper made a lovely save to deny the Spurs striker. From
Spurs' second corner of the match, the ball fell to Hannah Charman,
who neatly places into the back of the net. 2-0.
It's not long after that
Woking were forced into a mistake and the determination of Jessie
Richards lead to her netting our third goal.
The second half found a
Woking player time her run well and the following shot was on
target, forcing Toni into action and making a smart save.
Spurs hit on the counterattack and Jessie broke through to find
herself one on one with the keeper. A cool piece of finishing
saw Jess deftly put the ball to the goalie's left, making it 4-0.
Once more a set-piece
paid off, when Spurs were awarded another corner. This time
Rosi was waiting to score, bringing the score 5-0.
The ball was laid off to
Clare, who fed Kat Clifton and the midfielder moved the ball onto
Rosi, who took a shot that was tipped past the post by the Woking
keeper. The Spurs defence were soon called into action and
cleared the ball for a Woking corner, which had to be cleared off
the line by Jenny.
Spurs got a free-kick
outside the area and Kat stepped up to take it, but it was straight
at the keeper making it an easy save. With 30 minutes to go
Spurs make a double substitute - Kerry Daniells on for Clare and
Gill Blackmore on for injured Jessie.
Kerry's throw in went to
Rosi, who was able to get a shot on goal, which looked to be going
in, but, by the narrowest of margins, it went wide. Play swung
to the other end and a Woking corner was cleared once more.
However, it landed at the feet of a Woking player, who took a
powerful shot bringing the score to 5-1.
As time ran out, Gill
went on a run, beating the Woking defence before taking a shot that
had to be knocked away to keep the score 5-1 at the final whistle.
A good performance
again this week keep it up ladies.

Regional Football League - Premier Division |
Another big away win
keeps Spurs Ladies in contention at the top of the London and
South-East Regional League's Premier Division.
For the first ten
minutes Spurs were much the better side and it was not long before
Spurs were awarded a free kick, when Mel Berry was brought crashing
to the turf. Unfortunately, the set-piece came to nothing,
but Tottenham found
Crowborough confident in
playing three at the back and crowding the mid field. Their first
attack came from a long ball which was neatly cleared away by the
THLFC defence.
A Crowborough corner was
cleared away by Lacey Amato, but not far enough however, although
Kelly Herrett and Dom Clarke were waiting to clear the second ball.
In the next home attack, a shot was fired in over the Spurs keeper
to make it 1-0 to Crowborough.
For the next 30 minutes
Spurs were not their usual self and desperately needed to start
playing their own game. Five minutes before half time, Rosi Webb
latched onto a loose ball and picked out a cross to Jessie Richards.
The keeper got there first, but fumbled the ball and Jessie knocked
it into the net to make it 1-1.
Within just a minute
remaining in the first half, the ball was played into Rosi from Dom
and the Spurs striker picked out Clare Singh, who laid the ball off
neatly to Kat Clifton to convert the opportunity and give Spurs the
lead at 2-1.
Straight from the
kick-off, Kelly headed to ball to Kat, who sliced the Crowborough
defence with a great run and played the ball into the path of Rosi
to score and take Tottenham into the break with a 3-1 lead.
Into the second half,
the weather had deteriorated. However, Spurs continued to play
their game with confidence. Ten minutes into the second half, Kerry
Daniells replaced Jenny Curtis to add fresh legs, especially as the
pitch was getting worse, making it heavy going and difficult to pass
the ball.
Clare broke away down
the wing and produced a fine cross to Rosi, who volleyed it first
time, but her shot flew just over the bar. With the attacks
coming less frequently now, it was Spurs who capitalised, when Kat
played the ball through to Jessie, who beat the keeper with her shot
to make it 4-1.
Gill Blackmore came on
for Kat to stiffen up the midfield, as both teams found it hard with
the pitch now a mud bath. There were a couple of more chances for
Spurs before the end, but there was no further scoring, as the game
finished 4-1 and the Spurs team continue their good form.

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies
moved into second place in the league with a convincing 4-1 win over
Acton Sports Club at a chilly Fred Knights.
Early on a ball is
cleared from an Acton corner, Athena Yennaris picks up the ball and
makes a good run down the right wing but to no avail. Moving
forward in the next attack, Faye Callaway plays the ball to Jessie
Richards, who squares it to Samrawit Bereket, who is bought down in
the area. A penalty is awarded and Kat Clifton steps up to the
spot and scores to make it 1-0.
Kat produced some
nice skill to play the ball in to Jess, who shoots, but her effort
is saved. Clare Singh made a good run, before Faye, Gill and
Jess all have shots which are blocked.
Acton hit Spurs on the
break and Athena made an amazing tackle, before she was fouled.
While she is down, Samrawit decides to get a back and shoulder
massage from Rodney and Jenny Curtis changes into her old, but comfy
boots. Kelly cleared the next Acton attack to Faye, who flicks it
onto Jessie, who was stopped at the last minute.
Faye holds the ball up
well and plays it square to Clare, who is intercepted. Jess
and Faye are closing down well and working hard, while the ball is
played through the Spurs back four.
Dom Clarke has to make
the first slide challenge of her life.
Clare receives the ball
from the Acton goal kick, runs and runs and strikes a good shot.
Rosi Webb is celebrating from the sidelines (as she is suffering
from tonsillitis and should be at home), but the ball hits the side
netting.
Jessie gets the ball
from an Acton goal kick, turns well and played the ball to Clare,
but it's just out of her reach.
From an Acton throw-in,
Faye got the ball, flicked it to Jessie who keeps her composure and
puts the ball into the bottom left corner for 2-0.
Dom played the ball down
the line to Clare, who plays it through the defence. Samrawit burst
onto it using her pace to get in front of her defender and slots the
ball home. 3-0.
The Acton defence are
getting frustrated with Faye's hard work, strength and ability to
hold the ball up and the Spurs striker is soon fouled, when an Acton
defender walks into her for no reason, but nothing comes from the
free-kick.
Athena produces another
great last ditch slide tackle as the ball is played through. Jess
is working very hard to close down and put the Acton defence under
pressure.
The ball is played
through and Dom slides in for the second time in the game. Bruce is
filming the game and is flabbergasted by the large crowd who are
having a fantastic Easter Sunday and enjoying the Spurs football on
display.
Jessie spins the
defender like she isn't there and goes on an amazing Ronaldo-like
run, but the final shot was easily saved.
Half time and Spurs have
had most of the ball and played some neat football. Acton have
yet to trouble keeper Lacey Amato.
Jessie and Faye close
the defence down and force a mistake, as the ball falls to Clare,
who put the ball into an empty Acton net for 4-0. Claire does
a Klinsmann to celebrate.
An Acton free kick was
played into the area, but Kelly Herrett gets a solid header to
clear. Athena makes another strong tackle and from the resulting
corner, Acton score, as the wind assists the ball into the net to
reduce the lead to 4-1.
Samrawit switches the
play to Claire, who plays a first time ball to Jess and her
resulting shot is well saved. Kat tracks back well with her player,
but her back pass is weak and as Lacey comes out to clear, the
player nicks it away and a penalty is given. The Acton player steps
up calmly to the spot, but her penalty is put wide of the goal.
Kelly chases a long ball
back with the Acton no. 10 and makes a good clearance under
pressure. Gill closes down well and gets the ball in the face for
the third time in the game, but gets up and continues to battle on.
Spurs concede a free
kick and Lacey (a.k.a Tomato) pulls off a save any keeper would be
proud of to keep the score at 4-1. Again Lacey makes another good
save with ten minutes to go to keep Acton out.
Hannah replaces the
hard working Faye and gets stuck in with 50/50 challenges, winning
them all. Kerry comes on in defence to replace Jenny.
The final score was
4-1.
A good hard working performance from the girls sees the recent run
of good form continue. Lets take the positives from this into the
next game away to Woking.
