Spurs Ladies held onto third place in the L&SERWFL Premier League
table with an impressive 5-1 away win at Hendon. The first half
was uneventful with both sides unable to keep hold of the ball long
enough to create many chances, but the second half was the total
opposite.
It was not long after the restart that Hendon took the lead.
This woke up the Tottenham side and they managed to bring their
usual passing game back to the fore and were soon knocking on
Hendon's door. A quick-fire hat-trick from Samrawit Bereket managed
to put Spurs into a commanding 3-1 lead.
With a one for one swap, Jessie Richards replaced Rosi Webb and her
fresh legs tore the Hendon defence apart and she managed to seal the
win with two striker's goals, bringing the final score to 5-1.
Well done to the girls once again for digging deep and turning the
game around after falling behind.

Another good team performance, coping with some necessary
substitutions, saw the Spurs Ladies first team move into second
place in the table with a 4-0 win over Woking.
Spurs started the
game positively, with the ball being played out to the wings, where
Clare Singh was waiting and she ran down the chalk, managing to get
a cross into the box. Samrawit Bereket was in the right place
to take a shot at goal, which was patted away by the home keeper.
The first warning to Spurs came when Woking played a long ball over
the Tottenham defence and their striker was on-side. The player ran
onto the ball and put a cross into another waiting Woking player,
but the resulting shot went wide. Woking broke again and
centre midfielder Mel Berry made a superb sliding tackle to thwart
any attempt to test Lacey Amato in the Tottenham goal. The ball was
then collected by Kat Clifton and she linked well with Samrawit on
the wing.
Spurs won their first corner, which was delivered into the box, where
it landed at Mel's feet and she got a shot off, but it went wide.
Jenny Curtis played the ball forward to Jessie Richards, who squared
it to Rosi Webb, who neatly puts the ball into the net to open the
scoring in the game.
It wasn't long before keeper Lacey was called into action and she
made an excellent save tipping the ball over the bar. Athena
Yennaris latched onto a loose ball and ran through the Woking
midfield, before she laid the ball through to Jessie, but again the
keeper made an easy save.
The second half saw Spurs start off with a vengeance and Samrawit
ran the ball forward before playing it to Rosi. On the
overlap, Samrawit took the play on and seeing Jessie waiting inside,
she sets her up to plant the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
When Spurs were awarded a free kick, it was taken by Kat, who played
the ball short to Samrawit, who took a shot that beat the keeper and
it was 3-0.
Athena bravely went into a 50-50 challenge and both players were
determined to win the ball, however they clashed and both ladies
were hurt. The change necessitated Gill Blackmore coming into the
middle of the park and Mel Berry dropping back into defence. Both
teams needed to refocus and it wasn't not long before Spurs were
pressuring the Woking goal again.
Spurs made their second change when Faye Callaway came on for Rosi
and soon after Faye is letting the Woking defence know she is there
with her first shot going just wide. Skipper Kelly Herrett
took a knock to her knee and substitute Kerry Daniells took her
place on the park. As the game was coming to it's close, Gill
picked up a loose ball, made a neat pass to Faye, who is through on
goal and one on one with the keeper, producing a powerful shot that
bulged the net for the final goal of the game that finished 4-0.

Spurs Ladies had to travel South of the river to meet our bogey team
Long Lane and they knew that this was a must win game for our title
hope to be kept alive. Within 10 minutes of the game kicking off,
Gill Blackmore picked out a pass to Rosi Webb, who's shot was
straight at the defender. However, Gill picked up the rebound
and played it back to Rosi, who was waiting on the edge of the area
and the striker shot hard and low into the bottom corner to give
Tottenham the early advantage.
Kerry Daniells won a physical battle with a Long Lane player to gain
possession and passed forward to Faye Callaway, who in turn knocked
it back to Rosi, who took a shot that skimmed the goalpost. A good
cross by Faye found Rosi, who laid it off to Gill, who neatly
slotted it past the Long Lane keeper to make it 2-0 to Spurs.
Midfielder Kat Clifton holds off two Long Lane players and manages
to get her pass off to Mel Berry, who plays it on to Jessie
Richards, who is deemed off side. Spurs needed to bring the
game back under control as Long Lane like to play the aerial game
and they quickly did that when Kat crossed the ball to Jessie to
make it 3-0.
The physical game soon become apparent with some strong challenges
going in, being matched by both Athena Yennaris and Dom Clarke,
while Mel was having her usual gritty performance in midfield by
making some superb challenges. Faye, with her right foot, dinks
the ball over the Long Lane defence for Rosi to run onto and
finishes clinically making it 4-0.
We knew that we could not get complacent in the second half when
there was a mix up at the back, which allowed the Long Lane striker
to get one back to narrow the score to 4-1.
A second warning came when a header from a Long Lane corner was
deemed to have gone through the side netting.
With the introduction of the substitutes, Spurs changed formation
and was not long before Jenny Curtis showed her strength by putting
in a solid tackle. Spurs managed to shut up shop and kept the score
line at 4-1 at the end of the game.
The girls have their own destiny in their hands and if they believe
in themselves will reap the rewards.
Well done girls and get well soon Clare.

Two Jessie Richards goals
gave a nervy Tottenham Hotspur Ladies side the victory they needed to
clinch the league title, but they might need to buy a coat of paint for
the woodwork at Fred Knights, which came to their rescue twice.
The win in the Spurs Ladies'
last game of the season was hard-won and means that other teams with
games in hand are unable to over-take June Clarke's team at the top of
the table and looking forward to playing in the Women's Football
South-East Combination league next season.
It was a gem in which
Horley Town played a full part and in front of a crowd in excess of 200
(containing many ex-players, manager sand players from teams of other
age groups at the club), they belied their position of second from
bottom of the league. Indeed with a bit more luck, they might have
denied Spurs their moment of glory.
But then Tottenham had
seen an early Rosi Webb shot rattle the goalpost with the goalkeeper
beaten and were denied by a good save from the keeper and a goal-line
clearance, as well as an offside call, when it looked as though the
players through the middle were onside.
However, the team showed
some apprehension although they were passing the ball well and finding
space in wide positions through Clare Singh and Jessie Richards.
Unfortunately, a couple of long-range Kat Clifton shots were just too
high, but a fine through ball from Clare was seized on by a well-timed
run by Jessie on the left and she steered the ball low past the keeper
to give Tottenham the lead five minutes before the break.
Lacey Amato had been
relatively untroubled in the Spurs goal in the first half, but after the
break, Horley came strongly at Spurs and she was kept more occupied.
A header hit the crossbar and Lacey had to race out of goal to deter a
raid down the right after her kick out was intercepted. The
defence seemed to be jittery and some needless inter-passing in their
own last third lead to Horley breaking through and scoring a goal
similar to Tottenham's to tie it up at 1-1 five minutes into the second
half.
The crowd were silenced,
as this wasn't following the script.
However, almost
immediately, Tottenham could have regained the lead when Kerry Daniells
long free-kick dropped to the feet of Rosi in the six yard box, but she
failed to get a substantial contact and the keeper smothered the ball.
The chances came at both ends, with Horley hitting the bar once more
with a long shot and Jessie missing a header from Samrawit Bereket's
cross inside the six yard box.
It looked as though the
champagne would remain unopened, as Spurs struggled to break down a
resolute Horley side, who force Lacey into two good saves to protect the
Tottenham goal. However, the chances began to come Tottenham's way
and a break forced a corner on the Spurs left. It was swung in and
although nobody could get a head on it in the middle of the penalty
area, it dropped to Jessie at the far post and she struck a hooked shot
back over the keeper from a narrow angle to see the ball nestle in the
net. The roar must have been heard at White Hart Lane, such was
the relief.
This seemed to take the
sting out of Horley's attacking game, coming ten minutes from the end
and Jessie could have had a hat-trick, when she twisted and turned her
marker on the halfway line, then ran the distance to the penalty area
and from inside it, she shot to the keeper's left, but she touched it
wide. Gill Blackmore, on for Rosi Webb, took a run into the
penalty area too and hit a shot straight at the goalie, although she had
been offside.
As added time, a
considerable amount of which was added after a number of injuries,
ticked down, the nerves began to show off the pitch, but on it, the
ladies saw out time by keeping the ball at the Horley end and the final
whistle brought great scenes of jubilation as the team gained promotion
and silverware to accompany it. |
