Spurs Ladies christened
their new home pitch with a friendly with Launton Ladies. With
temperatures soaring into the high 20s, it was hardly the weather for a
pre-season friendly, but both teams did well under the sweltering sun.
Today's game was to
intended to introduce the summer's new signings and to see how they
would fit into a well structured team. There were some good
individual performances, from both the old and the new.
However, Ricole Vyse did exceptionally well in between the sticks.
Final score showed a 5-1
win for Spurs.

Spurs were much the
better team in their friendly against AFC Wimbledon, with some
really good passing moves, but they found it difficult to penetrate
the Wimbledon defence.
Spurs Ladies finally
broke them down in the 30th minute with a pass from Mel Berry out to
Clare Singh, who crossed it into the waiting Tasha Ademakinwa, who
tapped it neatly into the back of the net.
It was not long before
Spurs were awarded a corner and Ebony Heath rose high to get her
head to it, however the keeper made a good save to keep the score
line at 1-0 at the break.
In the second half Spurs
started off the same way and were soon awarded the chance to make it
2-0, but the shot went wide of the target.
Fran Hussey released to
Natalie Arbuckle and she fired in a shot that rattled the crossbar.
Then Hayley Graham seized her chance when she spotted the keeper out
of position and off her laces, lobs the keeper to make it 2-0.
Spurs had to keep their
focus and were soon awarded their third goal with some good link up
play between Carmel Clinton, Dom Clarke, Ayo Okunuga and Tasha, who
slotted it into the back of the net.

Spurs christened their
new league with a goal-less draw against Whitehawk, who were a well
organised and strong team.
First impressions were
that we were going to have a tough time in the South East
Combination, as Whitehawk started the stronger. However, the ladies
soon settled and Spurs had to defend deep to hit the visitors on the
counter attack.
Into the second half,
Spurs were much the stronger side defensively and looked dangerous
on the counter attack. The ladies should be proud of the way
they dug deep today and must take the positives to the next game.

Spurs Ladies played their
first away game of the season against a strong Luton Town side.
It was Spurs however who
started the better with a strong attack from the midfield, which allowed
the Spurs forward to run onto the ball and take a shot which was blocked
by the Town keeper. Spurs continued their attacking with some good work
down the right flank.
Knocking the ball around nicely, the Ladies switched the play and it was
not long before Spurs where rewarded. Their first goal of the
season came when Carmel Clinton hit an excellent shot to beat the keeper
and take Spurs into the lead. Tottenham had many opportunities to
increase the lead, but Luton managed to keep the ball out of the back
of the net. It was in the 37th minute when it took a thunderbolt
of a shot from the home side to bring the game level.
The second half saw Luton come out fighting and with Spurs switching
off, it was soon 2-1 to Luton. However, undeterred, Spurs fought hard
and had good spells of possession and again threatened the Luton goal.
With Luton hitting Tottenham on the counter attack, the Spurs keeper
Ricole Vyse pulled off a spectacular double save. Just before the
final whistle Spurs found themselves 3-1 down with a powerful shot from
Luton, which exaggerated the balance of play.
First team manager June Clarke said, "We had good spells of possession
and were unfortunate to concede just before the half-time break.
It was always a case of whoever got the second goal would go on to win
the game and we were unfortunate it wasn't us. We'll take the
positives and build on them for next week's game."

Spurs Ladies put on a
battling display against last season's runners-up, but lost out partly
due to some indecisive defending.
Two early shots fizzed wide
of the Spurs goal, before Jessie Richards twice threatened the City
goal. It was in the 30th minute when good work on the right from a
throw-in between Jessie and Clare Singh ended with the winger being
baulked in the box and the referee pointing to the penalty spot, much to
the disgust of the Welwyn bench. Mel Berry kept her cool to step
up and dispatch the ball beyond the keeper's dive and into the net to
give Spurs the lead.
Goalkeeper Ricole Vyse
had made a good save from a Welwyn forward, before she combined with
captain Kelly Herrett to keep out a free-kick from the visitors.
However, before the break, City equalised with a low cross that was
pulled back behind the Spurs defence and swept high into the net.
It was another penalty.
early in the second half that saw Welwyn take the lead and in a period
of play when Spurs were reduced to nine players through injury, they
went 3-1 ahead. Some diffident defending was punished and Spurs
soon found themselves 1-6 down with 20 minutes to go, but they kept
plugging away and as the away team tired, Tottenham came back into the
game and finished the stronger of the two sides.
Jessie Richards seized on
a feeble kick out by the Welwyn Garden City keeper, which was blocked by
Alex Small and rounded the prone goalie to slip the ball home and then a
good ball into the box found Kirsten Thomson quickest to react and stick
out a leg to divert the ball past the keeper to make it 3-6, much to the
disgust of the Welwyn bench.
Despite a last surge with three players bearing down on goal, Tottenham
could not close the gap any further and will need to produce more
football like the last fifteen minutes in future games, rather than the
fifteen before that.

A much changed Spurs Ladies
lost out to a more experienced Norwich City side in the SE Combination.
A goal within four minutes
with a free header from a free-kick put the Canaries on their way, but
Tottenham hit back and tested the home defence. Sasha Kelly
switched the play to Clare Singh, who ran down the line and whose shot
could not be held by the keeper, but there was not a white shirt on hand
to capitalise.
The Norwich goalkeeper
was soon in action once more, this time tipping a shot aimed for the top
corner over the bar. A surging run by Jenny Curtis ended with a
Spurs shot that just went wide and when the home side did get forward,
the Spurs defence looked sound and held them at bay.
The start of the second
half saw another Spurs shot go just wide, but as the half went on, City
became more dominant and their strength was shown with three further
goals to seal a 4-0 win.

A nine-goal thriller saw
Spurs Ladies make another strong finish, but just fail to get a point
from the visitors, Cambridge City in this SE Combination match.
Spurs started off much the better side and were attacking the Cambridge
goal, but to no avail. The ref awarded Cambridge a free kick 20 yards
outside the box and they executed the set piece well making it 1-0.
Undeterred Spurs attacked from the off and were pressurising the
Cambridge defence, when a cross across the goal was fumbled by the
keeper, only for the quick thinking of Sam Garner to tap it into the
back of the net bringing it back to 1-1.
There was not much between the two sides and Spurs made a break forward
and were rewarded with their second goal, when Alex Small beat the
keeper to put Tottenham ahead. With not much time left in the
first half, a Cambridge shot from 40 yards out hit the back of the net
to level the score at 2-2 at the break.
Spurs come out after half time knowing that they need to concentrate,
however this was not the case and Cambridge soon get three quick goals.
Alex received a through ball and beat the keeper to get her second
goal bringing it back to 5-3 and with time running out THLFC attack and
Alex is bought down in the box. The ref pointed to the spot and
gives the penalty. Natasha Ademakinwa stepped up and calmly slotted the
ball into the back of the net to bring Tottenham back to just one goal
behind, but despite the late fight-back, it was not quite enough and
City ran out 5-4 winners.

Spurs
played their first mid-week fixture and knew that this was a must
win match, after a run of defeats in the FA South-East Combination.
Tottenham got straight on with the job, when Carmel Clinton made at
attacking run down the left and got her shot on goal, which was
easily saved by the keeper. There was then a scramble in the
Gillingham goalmouth and the ball hit the bar and came out to keep
the score at 0-0. As is the way of Tottenham's season so far,
just after a spell of pressure on the opposition's goal, the ball
fell nicely and Gillingham hit a volley into the net to make it 1-0.
Clare
Singh made a good run on the wing and then laid the ball off to
Carmel. Alex Small was waiting to seize on any opportunity,
but just couldn't convert the pass to her, so Spurs were unlucky to
go into the break 1-0 down.
At the
start of the second half, Sam Garner replaced Kerry Daniells at left
back, with the team starting on the attack. A superb cross into the
box found Gill Blackmore, who struck a sweet effort to bring the
score back to 1-1.
Another
good link up between Gill and Alex unfortunately saw the ball goes
just wide this time. Spurs were growing in confidence and they
were playing some excellent passing football. The ball was played
out from the back through to the wing and crossed into the path of
Alex who scored the second goal for Spurs.
Once
more, Tottenham did not rest on their laurels and went out to take
the game to Gillingham, being awarded a corner. Sam was in the
danger zone and while she was surrounded by blue shirts and could
not get off her shot off, but the ball fell nicely to Alex, but her shot
was again blocked.
As time
ticked down to the final whistle, defender Mel Berry was called into
action and made a superb challenge. With two minutes to go Alex was
brought down on the edge of the box and a free kick is given to
Tottenham, but the dead ball was sent high over the bar. There
was still time for one more attempt on goal, as substitute Jessie
Richards was through on goal and the keeper stood strong, with
Jessie shooting just off target.
When the
final whistle blew on a 2-1 win for Spurs, the home crowd showed
their support and performed a Mexican wave.
This was
a deserved win for the girls and the squad can take the positives
into the next game on Sunday.

Spurs Ladies seem to be
mirroring the men's side as they struggle to get away from the
bottom of the table and suffered a penalty award against them for
handball that helped Wellingborough Diamonds on the way to a big
win.Within
five minutes of the start, Wellingborough were awarded a penalty for
a hand ball in the box , which was converted to give them a 1-0
lead. Spurs attack, but the Wellingborough defence stand strong and
deny any chance of a goal. From a corner, the visitors got their
second goal, when the player ran through and nodded the ball into
the back of the net.
Spurs staged a
fight-back and were awarded a free-kick from 30 yard, which was well
palmed over the bar by the Wellingborough keeper. Immediately,
Wellingborough broke away and took a shot which rebounded off the
post and rolled into the back of the net for 3-0.
In an incident just like
the first penalty, but this time in the Wellingborough box, a
hand-ball was awarded and Mel Berry calmly walked up and slotted the
spot kick into the back of the net to pull it back to 3-1 at half
time.
With a change to the
formation, Spurs went with three at the back and Jessie Richards
replaced Kerry Daniells. Within minutes, Wellingborough were
awarded a free kick, which the Spurs keeper had her hands ready to
catch, when the ball was nicked away and nodded into the back of the
net. Things get worse and the Tottenham defence was constantly
under pressure. Jessie snatched a consolation goal, however
Wellingborough, who are a very well organised team, finish the game
strongly and score the goals their pressure deserved to run out 10-2
winners.

Tottenham travelled to
Brimsdown to meet their local rivals Enfield Town in the SE
Combination and were positive from the start with an early attack on
goal by Jessie Richards, which was saved quickly by keeper Jo Ayre.
Tottenham maintained
the attack when a free-kick was awarded and from 20 yards Clare
Singh was unable to clear the Enfield wall, but Alex Small was
waiting in the box and again keeper Jo Ayre was called upon to make
a save. Enfield retaliated and were awarded a corner, which was
cleared with a beautiful header from Nichola Cable. Again
Enfield attacked and they netted a goal, however, the Tottenham
defence neatly played them offside with a well-marshalled line and
the goal was not given. This upset Enfield and their captain
received a booking. Still reeling from the disallowed goal, Enfield
were awarded a free-kick and Mel Berry and Dom Clarke take one for
the team in blocking the shot.
Into the second half and
Enfield were pressuring from the off and earned a sloppy goal.
For a while Tottenham were under pressure but dug deep and found
their resolve to attack, but with no luck. With the clock ticking
down, Nichola picked up a loose ball and from 25yards out takes a
shot, which is destined for goal, however the Enfield keeper makes a
super save and just tips the ball round the post to keep the final
score at 1-0.

Spurs Ladies earned a
valuable victory that lifted them three places up the table, as they
held off a second half challenge from Bedford Town Bells to maintain
their 3-1 winning score-line.
From the off Spurs were
much the stronger side and with a flick on from Fiona Butterfield,
this allowed Jessie Richards to run onto the ball. The keeper came
out and Jessie was through one on one, however she kept her cool and
slotted the ball into the far corner to give Tottenham a 1-0
advantage.
Soon THLFC had a free
kick from 25 yards and skipper Kelly Herret took a shot, putting the
ball right under the bar, with the sun in the Bedford keeper's eyes.
The goalie fumbled the catch and the ball hit the bar. As it
came down, it looked to be over the line, but just to make sure
Fiona taps it into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
From a quick free kick,
the ball was played to Clare Singh on the right wing. She made
a pacy run down the line and with the keeper off her line, Clare
took a shot over her, but it was just over the bar too.
However, with a ball that was cleared out of the danger zone by
Jenny Curtis straight to Jessie, she out-paced the defence and
converted it from just inside the area to make it 3-0 to Tottenham.
With a lack of
concentration and just before the half time whistle, Bedford had a
shot and it bounced off the inside of the post and in to make the
score 3-1.
Into the second half,
Bedford came out and started much the stronger and pinned THLFC back
in their own half. However, Spurs managed to play the ball out to
Clare, who again runs down the flank and puts a cross into the box,
where Jessie is waiting and makes a good connection with her head,
but the keeper makes a comfortable save.
Alex Small came on for
Fiona and is brought into the game when Jessie played the ball to
her and she through on the keeper, but she made as good save as the
players collided. Alex went flying, but recovered to carry on,
as did the Bells keeper.
Hayley Graham had a
chance to make it 4-1 when the ball fell to her feet, but she was
unable to get her shot off and with space in front of her, Jenny
went on a run that looked like it could end in a goal, but
unfortunately not, when she was stopped by a Bedford defender.
With minutes to go Bedford were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous
position, but the delivery ended up safe in the hands of keeper
Ricole Vyse and the points helped lift THLFC out of the bottom
places in the table.
