Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson was
on hand to applaud McDonalds’ success in training 10,000 Level 1
coaches for grassroots football.
The girls from the THLFC Under-10 and under11
teams took part in a film shoot to celebrate the achievement at
Fredrick Knight’s Sports Ground on Thursday 6th April and
took part in a shooting and goalkeeping exercise, under the watchful
eyes of the England goalie.
Two coaches who had come through the scheme
were on hand to organise the sessions, with Paul offering his advice
to the girls as they went about their practices.
With the club enjoying success on the field,
their teams have been catching the eye on the pitch and they know
how much the contribution of Level 1 coaches makes to the
development of the girls’ game.
Club Chairman Glenn Weaver said, “The
importance of Level 1 coaches to all clubs at the grass roots level
cannot be under-estimated. Without these people who are willing to
give their time to gain their qualification, clubs such as ours
would not be able to offer the range and extent of coaching to over
100 players as we do at this time. The rapid rise in interest in
women’s football has seen a correspondent sharp increase in the need
for coaches and it is pleasing that initiatives such as the one
organised by McDonalds are being put in place to cope with the
demand. Already we have over 50 girls aged between 7 and 9
undertaking coaching sessions in conjunction with the Joined Up
Northumberland Park (JUNP) organisation and THFC’s Football In The
Community scheme, every Saturday morning at the
White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre in White Hart Lane.”
