Spurs Ladies Reserves knew this was
going to be a tough game and so it proved as Dagenham and Redbridge
Reserves held them to a 1-1 draw at Fred Knights.
An early through ball played by Lillie Chapman found Jessie Richards, who took a shot that was saved by the D&R keeper. Then another attack saw Faye Callaway cross and THLFC were awarded a penalty for handball. Captain Gill Blackmore stepped up to take the spot-kick, but it went over the cross bar.
The Daggers were having attacks at the
Spurs end and from a corner which was punched out by Laura May, the
returning shot went just wide of the post. Tottenham hit back
with a ball over the top to Jessie, but her shot was straight at the
keeper, then Laura had to be quick off her line to deny a D&R
forward latching onto a through pass.
The half finished with a low left wing cross from Faye, which was missed by the THLFC forwards and the sides turned around at 0-0.
From an early corner in the second half,
Dagenham put the ball away to take the lead, but this spurred on
THLFC and a through ball from Jenny Curtis to Faye was once more
shot straight at the keeper. Gill made a run down the line and
played the ball in to Jessie, but again the Daggers keeper makes a
save to keep Spurs out.
Faye was causing problems for the
visiting defence and made a run finishing with a shot, but THLFC
still could not convert the chances they were making, as Athena
Yennaris made a good forward run, but her shot ended up going wide.
Dagenham broke away and their shot went
just wide of the upright, but Dom Clarke latched onto a loose ball,
ran through the D&R midfield before laying off the ball to Faye, who
beat the Daggers defence and scored a late equaliser to share the
points between the two sides and end Tottenham's 100% record in the
league.

A slow start held back the Reserves, but as the game wore on they began playing more like their old selves and recorded a 2-0 win over Hendon Reserves to keep their unbeaten record. Although the side were passing the ball about well, they lacked a cutting edge in the final ball and the finishing, but were holding Hendon in their own half for most of the first 45 minutes. Within the first five minutes, a Dom Clarke free-kick was fumbled by the visiting keeper and Jessie Richards prodded the loose ball inches wide. Then Jessie brought a save from the keeper with her legs, after a smart turn in the area, with Lillie hitting the rebound at goal, but over the bar from 20 yards out. There was little luck for Richards as a slight deflection off a defender took a goal-bound shot just wide after seven minutes. Gill Blackmore was linking well with Lillie Chapman and Louise van Hamme in midfield, but her cross into the Hendon area on the half hour caused panic and Jessie and Charley Sandford both had shots blocked by the goalie. Further chances fell to both players before the break, but neither hit the net. Into the second half, Richards made a good run on the right wing and her inviting cross was volleyed wide by Sam Garner, but the breakthrough goal came shortly after. With seven second half minutes elapsed, Di Gardiner distributed the ball to Louise on the right wing and her cross into the goalmouth provided a simple tap-in from close range for Charley. Four minutes later, Sandford nearly notched a second, when her low shot nearly squirmed through the keeper's dive and she recovered just before the ball crossed the line. it took until halfway through the second half for the score to be doubled, with Jessie Richards heading on a long ball between two players, then cutting onto her right foot to finish low into the bottom of the net. Spurs were still struggling to find the fluidity they are noted for, but Lillie almost hit another goal, when she turned to hit a drive a foot wide of the right hand upright and the same piece of woodwork was struck by Richards' volley from Athena Yennaris' cross with just nine minutes remaining. Although the performance left something to be desired, it was a professional display in getting the three points without playing in the effective way they can. |

Acton Sports Club Reserves fought out a 1-1 draw with Spurs Reserves in a scrappy game. Spurs forced an early corner and from it, the ball flashed across the face of goal, but no Spurs player attacked it and
then Jessie Richards took a shot on goal,
but the keeper made a comfortable save.
The scrappy start did not suit Tottenham
and Acton soon started to put the pressure on and Laura May was called
into action to keep it safe. Some Spurs pressure was building,
but the end product was not there and it was not long before Acton
were rewarded for their attacking with a goal.
Jessie made a run on goal and took the
ball away from the keeper, but her shot slowly rolled towards goal and
the post got in the way and there was no Spurs forward there to follow
up.
THLFC come out for the second half looking
much more the stronger side and its not long before they made an
attack on the Acton goal. Spurs were awarded a free-kick, which was
taken by Dom Clarke that hit the bar and bounced down onto the goal
line, but once more no-one was on hand to knock it in, as it looked
like it was just not going to be Tottenham's day.
When Acton broke away, it looked like they
might add to their score, but the defensive line held strong and the
determination of the team finally paid off, when Charley Sandford put
the ball into the net making it 1-1 and earning a point from the
match.

Spurs Reserves’ first game in four weeks saw
them recover from a sluggish start to go through to the Third Round of
the League Cup . The rustiness showed in Tottenham's game straight away as they made a mistake that led to an own goal to give the home side a 1-0 lead. However, this spurred the girls on, in just the reaction that was required and they started to play the good football they were used too. Just ten minutes from the end first half Tottenham nabbed an equaliser with Sam Garner beating the two centre backs and knocking the ball into the back of the net. Into the second half, Spurs continued to play their passing game and put pressure on the Newham defence, which soon resulted in their second goal from Jessie Richards. However, it was necessary for the Spurs defence to stay alert to avoid Newham snatching an equaliser. JUNE CLARKE |
