Today Tottenham Under-12
Blues faced Denham United, who Spurs B have failed to beat so far this
season, in the quarter finals of the Under-11 League Cup.
Straight from the off the
Blues held their own against one of the best teams in the league, with
Daniella Charles and Tyra Poole doing their bit in goal with Poppy
Bennett and Georgia Fairs rock solid at the back. Christie Page
and Emma T were making great runs down the flanks with Xelia
Mendes-Jones and Emma Mackie causing problems for their defence.
Tottenham created some great chances in the first half with Maya Vio and
Sophia Sarno coming on midway through the first half really tested the
Denham defence.
The second half started the
same way although Denham stood up well to the challenge and after 50
minutes the game was evenly poised. Extra time didn’t seem to
phase the girls although the same can’t be said for the parents on the
sidelines.
Finally, halfway through the
first half of extra time, Tottenham got a well deserved goal that came
from an inch perfect pass from Sophia, who played her best game of the
season to date, to super striker Maya who stroked the ball past the
Denham goalie. Tottenham weathered the storm until the last minute
of extra time when Denham equalized.
We now faced penalties which
gave Daniella Charles her chance to show off which she did by saving the
first Denham penalty. Poppy sent us on our way with superbly taken spot
kick then Denham scored to make it 1-1. Xelia and Georgia
unfortunately missed, but Daniella was rising to hero status by saving
the next two Denham penalties. Sophia then almost burst the net open
with her penalty leaving Denham having to score to stay in the cup.
Daniella once again showed
her excellent shot stopping ability by saving the last Denham penalty
sending Tottenham Blues into the Semi Finals.
Well Done Girls !!
Ashen faced manager Peter
Maynard said “I am extremely proud of all the girls; they showed true
grit. I was gutted when the equalizing goal went in, but had every
faith in Daniella to save the penalties."
Spurs B now face local
rivals Enfield Town at home on the 19th April 2008.
