On Saturday, the Under 11 white team went
to Denham to play what was the Whites first real competitive game
together and it was impressive to watch, showing good potential for the
coming season.
Each girl played to the best of their ability and gave 100% commitment
in achieving a very satisfying result, achieved with a well-taken
hat-trick from Alison Woodward in the Panthers match and with Louise
Waldock and Abigail Barrett hitting the net against the Wildcats.
Well done girls.

With it being the last Saturday before the
season starts, Spurs took on Bushey and produced a strong entertaining
performance.
With the team nearly at full strength it was a good time to start
determining playing positions for the forthcoming season.
With slick passing and good all round performance this was a delight to
watch, as the set piece sessions the girls had been working out in
training finally paid their dividends.
It was hard to pick a girl of the game has each girl performed at 100%
and the win was achieved with goals from Alison Woodward (2), Kayla
Miles, Abigail Barrett, Charlotte Chaloner and Louise Waldock.
Well done Girls.

Spurs Ladies Under-11
Whites won this opening match of the season and dominated the play for
long periods.
The full eleven
players were used and the substitutions were thoughtful and frequent.
In goal Lauren Holman was not called upon often, but made some brave –
and important - saves when she had to, while Kayla Miles performed
reliably in defence and midfield and, like Nicole Hall, played
energetically up and down the pitch. The first goal came from Kathleen
Jackson, who ran with the ball and scored with an accurate long shot.
Spurs kept up the
pressure, passing well and Alison Woodward made some penetrating runs
down the wing before crossing . Rachel Brier and Louis Waldock played
effectively in the middle and frequently slipped the ball to a forward
player. Into the second half, Charlotte Chaloner picked up a cross and
scored to make it two.
Try as they
did, Abigail Barrett and the others could not penetrate the defence for
another goal. Monique Thompson played a big part in the Tottenham
attack with many long throw ins and she was awarded Player of the Match.
In the last few
minutes, Rhiannon Bassett, though injured, joined the play. In the
dying seconds, the opposition snatched a goal, but the victory was
already secure.
Had the many chances
they created been taken, the Spurs win would have been by a greater
margin, but, with a new team, this is sure to come, in what promises to
be a successful season for the Whites.

A second close
victory this season for the Under-11 Whites was marked by two distinctly
different performances in each half.
The first half
started badly – an unlucky goal-mouth collision resulted in two Spurs
players getting injured and down on the grass, but before the ref could
blow up, Denham had scored the opening goal. The rest of the half was
marked by only a mediocre performance - players getting caught in
possession, some ill-timed back passes, too many individual efforts,
but, in contrast, long shots going just wide from Abigail Barrett and
Charlotte Chaloner. As previously predicted, Monique Thompson’s long
throws started movements in defence and attack.
In the second half, Spurs were a different team.
Goalkeeper Lauren Holman hardly touched the ball and Abigail scored a
clever equalising goal after a few minutes. Kayla Miles and
Rhiannon Bassett played soundly in a defensive partnership, with
Kathleen Jackson clearing up in front of them. Rachel Brier, Louise
Waldock and Nicole Hall took control of the midfield and eventually
Alison Woodward beat a defender and netted the winning goal.
By now dominant, Spurs created several chances including
long shots by Monique, Charlotte and goal area efforts by Abigail
again. Even so, many corner kicks and other chances, were not
converted.
By the time a settled side was established in the second
period, the visitors gave the home team little lee-way and the practised
passing routines became effective. A pattern is beginning to emerge
after only a few games, with players knowing their own role and that of
others. The first half is best forgotten ... as soon as possible.

Spurs Under-11 Whites
lost this match to Watford Ladies with a goal scored just after
half time that was against the run of play. Both before and after this,
the home team dominated the game with a series of shots that the
opposing goalkeeper managed to save. In the defence, Kayla Miles made
several strong tackles to win the ball and several important clearances
in the best traditions of a stalwart stopper. Nicole Hall was similarly
a good supplier for the midfield.
As in previous matches,
Monique Thompson made a number of long throws from the by-line, to begin
attacks and put in some big clearances up the pitch.
In the midfield, several
players passed the ball on – Rachel Brier, Louise Waldock and Rhiannon
Bassett, with Alison Woodward, whose contribution was a series of
intelligent through balls. However, the goal came soon after the
re-start and a substitution. Goalkeeper Lauren Holman made at
least one brave save in the match, but after long periods of inactivity,
when the goal came, she had little chance to stop it.
Spurs resumed the
pressure at once. Despite changes, the forwards could not finish off
the moves once they reached the penalty area. Abigail Barrett
and Charlotte Chaloner both went close and Kathleen Jackson was unlucky
with a spectacular long shot. For that, and some weaving runs, she was
latter given the Player of the Match Award.
This was a story of
unrelenting attack through Abigail, Charlotte, Rachel, Louise and
Alison, who all had chances that tested the goalie. The shots on the
target lacked a little in placement, while Kayla and Nicole stopped the
occasional counter attack from the Watford side.
In the end, to the relief of the visitors, the whistle blew. The Spurs
girls had all played hard and well. This type of result is hard to live
with, but these things happen in a season.
Better luck next time Spurs.

Spurs
Under-11 Whites have been the best team in all their league matches so
far this season and are starting to getting the appropriate results. A
goal came at the start of the game, when Kathleen Jackson made a clever
run and her shot was deflected into the net. Charlotte Chaloner nearly
repeated this with a strong effort soon after.
The next incident was a
goal mouth scramble that involved a suspected hand-ball and
several desperate clearances by the home team. The background for
this lies in the dimensions of the pitch. It was quite small and
the penalty area was similarly smaller than normal. This led to
problems – for both goalkeepers – in collecting the ball by hand, with
big kicks being the order of the day.
Rachel Brier went close
and Nicole Hall fired in a series of shots from distance that
worried the goalie, while Kayla Miles and Monique Thompson played well
in dispossessing foraging forwards and sending the ball back into the
Rangers penalty area. Abigail Barrett doubled the lead just before half
time with a well placed shot through the defence.
Soon after the re-start,
QPR were lucky to get a goal with a shot that somehow slid under Lauren
Holman, who kept goal securely before that. Spurs resumed the
pressure at once. Alison Woodward made some good runs down the
wing and put in some accurate crosses. She put several corners
kicks right into the danger area, which the QPR defence managed to
scramble away. Spurs perhaps had wanted that extra touch that allowed
time for the clearances to be made, as Kathleen and Charlotte continued
to probe away in the last third of the pitch.
Then Abigail
made it three
when she latched onto a poor goal kick with a strong shot. Louise
Waldock was busy in the midfield and started several attacks, with
Rhiannon Bassett similarly working hard as the whole team slipped into
top gear. A few defensive mistakes were quickly recovered by others.
Finally just before the
end, a Rangers player ran the length of the field, was not challenged
and squeezed the ball in for a consolation goal for home side. QPR had
played well, especially the goalie - but Spurs played a bit better.
As one parent supporter
commented, “This is more like it. The team is passing better, finding
more unmarked positions and improving with every match. They should
settle into a leading side.“
Some of the moves
practised in training were used to good effect. Abigail was Player of
the Match and it is worth mentioning again Monique’s long throws, the
back three’s stalwart defensive work and Rachel who was everywhere.
A deserved 3-2 win
for an improving side with all the girls contributing.

Charlotte
Chaloner scored a hat trick and was awarded Player of the Match in what
was a comprehensive win for Spurs Under-11 Whites. Spurs, playing
something like their true form, gained a lot of confidence, a boost to
their goal difference and their best score of the season against a
Hitchin side that tried hard to stem the tide.
Kathleen
Jackson
started the goal scoring with what is becoming her speciality, a clever run and
a shot from distance into the net. Soon after, following a few counter
attacks from the opposition, Alison
Woodward
provided a square pass and
Rhiannon Bassett
scored the second. In the next minute Alison herself went on a long
run, shot and netted the goalie’s save. Kayla Miles and Nicole Hall
played faultlessly in defence in both halves, a tribute to
their self-less attention to detail.
In the second half Charlotte scored
three goals, two close together from centres by Alison and lastly from a
header-on by Kathleen. Monique
Thompson,
who provided penetrating long throw-ins throughout the match, sent one
right to the goalkeeper who kept out two attempts, but not a third by
Louise Waldock.
Near the end Alison centred from a corner and shot again from the
rebound, which was deflected into the goal.
Eight – nil, but it
could have been more. A defender handled the ball which went in
anyway, but the ref had blown his whistle, instead of playing the
advantage rule. Abigail Barrett drilled her shot from the penalty spot,
but the goalkeeper did well to scramble the ball away. Rachel Brier had
two shots on goal and kept the passes coming forward, which was a
feature of this match.
Sadly Spurs
goalkeeper Lauren Holman had little chance to show her best form, but
did what was necessary. It was a day for the attackers. Manager
Peter Maynard commented that the training routine with Clive was paying
dividends. He reported that the Hitchin manager had said
that "Spurs were far too good for this league and should be playing
Academy opponents," but full marks to Hitchin for a totally determined
effort.
In an after-match
interview, Rhiannon exclaimed "I scored a goal !! And the whole team chased after me for the sweets. We all
played well and expect to score more goals in future."
Spurs remain near the
top of the league, chasing the leaders. Performances like this reflect
a steady improvement. We are looking forward to the game with Enfield
next week, as it will provide a measure of how far the team has come.

Spurs travelled to
Southgate this morning to play their local rivals Enfield Town Ladies
Blues, who so far this season were undefeated.
Charlotte Chaloner had a
goal bound shot blocked by a defender early on, but then Enfield then
began to use the advantage of the sloping pitch with the Whites
defending resolutely. In the seventeenth minute, Spurs took the
lead, from a corner on the right, as Kathleen Jackson powered home a
left foot flick giving the keeper no chance.
Spurs then held on until
half time, but two minutes into the second half Enfield equalised with a
deflected corner from the right wing. The Whites battled on
valiantly, with Nicole Hall, Monique Thompson and Kayla Miles
frustrating the Enfield attack with their defending.
Abigail Barrett, Alison
Woodward, Kathleen Jackson, Louise Waldock and eventually Rhiannon
Bassett all worked tremendously hard in midfield and Charlotte gave
their defence plenty of problems with her runs up front. Abigail
and Alison had shots saved by their keeper late on in the second half.
Monique, contributed the usual long throws despite a wet ball, and was a
fast improving, strong performer. She was named Player of the Match.
Lauren Holman had a faultless match in goal, her handling throughout was
superb and she made two great saves to thwart the Blues attempts at a
winning goal.
A parent supporter
commented, "Spurs were solid in defence and especially powerful on the
counter attack."
Well done Whites, 100%
effort by all as usual, earning a deserved point.

Spurs
Under-11 Whites showed some determined football in overcoming Harvesters
Under-11s in the HCGFL match.
The Whites
dominated the first half, but somehow just could not get the ball into
the net. Rachel Brier added a new dimension in the attack and Alison
Woodward sent though a supply of well placed passes, with Abigail
Barrett and Kathleen Jackson both going close. There were some
goal-mouth scrambles, while at the back, the defence seemed less sure
than in recent matches and the danger of an occasional counter attack
threatened, which were dealt with well by Lauren Holman in goal and
Nicole Hall played securely in front of her in defence.
Spurs struggles to break
through and it was only
immediately before the half-time whistle that Charlotte Chaloner pushed
home the ball from close in to give Tottenham the lead.
In the second half, the
home team equalised after a series of defensive mistakes, but this only
set the scene for more Spurs pressure.
Alison
sent one memorable ball right across the goal, before
Louise Waldock crashed
in a goal from a centre. Her tenacity was catching, as
Kathleen’s
free kick hit the post and Rachel made a good run and shot.
Louise Waldock was
tireless, getting in everywhere,
Abigail
worked hard passing and going towards goal, with one shot going very
close. Still, it was noticeable that the high bouncing ball created
problems.
Then, all the efforts
began to pay off. First
Kathleen’s shot from distance
was deflected in and more corners followed. After a handball was seen by
the referee, Nicole scored from the penalty spot with a strong shot high
into the net. Monique Thompson
had run all over the field to take her long throw ins and Charlotte
harried the defenders throughout.
The result of 4-1 fairly
reflected the balance of play. In an after match interview, Rachel
said “We were a bit sloppy in the first half, then we got into the game
more. In the second half, we just played better together” .
Peter Maynard, the team
manager/coach, commented that "once the combination was found, the Whites
outplayed the opposition comprehensively. Louise is the Player of the
Match for her energy and capacity to run at defenders."
The Whites continue
their climb up the league table. Watch out Luton.

Spurs U10 Whites
continue their climb up
the league table with this fiercely fought home victory against a
valiant Luton side.
The
girls went behind at the start with a rather harsh penalty decision
resulting in a penalty goal against them, but following the opening
goal, the match went from end to end with Rhiannon Bassett going close
and Louise Waldock making some strong forward runs, always challenging
for the ball. Then from one of Monique Thompson’s long throw
specials, Rhiannon scored with a neat left foot shot from close in at
the far post.
Next, Alison Woodward
scored an unexpected goal with her left foot from the edge of the area.
Spurs kept up the pressure with substantial attacks, Louise making
several chances. Finally, just before half time, Abigail Barrett again
put in another fine shot and Alison, tenaciously following up, netted
the rebound to make the score 3-1. At the other end Nicole Hall was
solidly stopping everything that came her way.
After the break Luton mounted consistent attacks, but Spurs showed some
constructive counter attacking moves, as Abigail in particular made some
dangerous runs. Luton managed to pull one goal back, but Spurs defended
in strength. Kayla Miles came on and made several powerful moves,
including one in which she ran past two players and laid off a clever
through ball. Rachel Brier also came on and held out well in
midfield. Charlotte Chaloner and Katherine Jackson played together in
attack, putting in creditable sequences.
However, the final
honours must go to the defence - Lauren Holman in goal, Nicole, Kayla
and Monique - for keeping the Luton attackers at bay. Afterwards
Katherine said, “We played really well. They were a good team, but we
managed to win out.”
Team manager/coach Peter
Maynard said the Whites were now either top or joint top of the league,
after an outstanding performance. He added that there would be no
Player of the Match, because the whole team deserved it, so he said they
were all Team of the Match.
This was perhaps the
best result so far and the team have a chance to consolidate in the next
week or so.

Spurs Under-11 Whites
lost this away match to a Denham United Wildcats team that had fewer
chances, but took more of them.
The visitors began
well with a series of corners and long throws from Monique Thompson into
the goal area. Rhiannon Bassett went close with a shot just over the
bar and after several counter attacks, Spurs went one down to a
predictable goal before the break. Half time saw the goalkeeper Lauren
Holman forced to go off with a nagging injury and Alison Woodward took
her place.
Almost immediately after the restart, Kathleen Jackson
shot hard from outside the area and the ball found its way to the corner
of the net for the equaliser, a vital goal. Spurs now showed a dramatic
improvement with Abigail Barrett, in her last match before going up to
the Blues first team and Charlotte Chaloner, going close .
Kayla Miles, now playing in the midfield, worked
energetically with Rachel Brier to create chances. Kathleen again
probed the home defence, but Denham held out. At the other end,
the Wildcats could make little headway against Nicole Hall who
marshalled the Spurs back line.
However, disaster came near the end. It was the old
problem of a high bouncing ball evading the defenders and the
decisive goal was conceded against the run of play - Denham had only
twice threatened the goal.
Meanwhile Rachel suffered a severe nose bleed, but the
team were still attacking at the final whistle. The result was a
disappointment after the recent run of good form, but Kathleen performed
well and was nominated Player of the Match.
Kayla commented after the match, “We should have been
passing more and helping each other, especially at first. I did try
hard.“
Peter Maynard, Team Manager and Coach said, “In the first
half, we took too much for granted, but then we improved and played
well." Clive, the Assistant Coach, confirmed, “Yes, we had plenty of
chances, but couldn’t take them.“
