This match was played on a muddy, wet
pitch at Fred Knights, in high wind and in the second half a severe
thunderstorm with intense hail, which resulted in its abandonment - and
a good soaking for all !!
Up to this point Spurs had dominated
the match, going ahead after four minutes with a goal by Rhiannon
Bassett. A long throw by Monique Thompson was not cleared and on
the second bounce, with players queuing up, Rhiannon pushed the
ball into the net. This set off a sustained Spurs attack that ended in
several corners and near misses.
The home side were defending in some
numbers and Kayla Miles, starting in the Spurs goal, only touched the
ball once. Harpenden's counter attacks were repulsed by Nicole Hall,
with Monique's help. By now the ball was heavy, but Alison Woodward had
several shots and Louise Waldock set an example with a strong run and an
attempt on goal. Kathleen Jackson also had a long shot saved on the
line, but at the half time, the score remained at 1 to 0.
In the second half Harpenden began to
mount more attacks, but Lauren Holman, now in goal, was not seriously
troubled. Kayla and Nicole were steady in defence and repeatedly pushed
the ball back into their opponents half. Kathleen tried more long shots
and Alison ran at the defenders and put through some passes up front.
Louise came off injured, but Rachel Brier proved an effective midfielder
in her two sessions, winning numerous tackles, and passing the ball
forward. Rhiannon also contributed in the middle.
Spurs were again having the best of the
play, despite an increasing number of home rallies, then the weather
took over. Lightning, thunder and the worst hail storm in memory ended
the contest. Both teams deserve recognition for a determined
performance in adverse conditions and we look forward to the replay of
the game.
