home counties girl's football league  - u11 cup final

A beautiful sunny day greeted the Tottenham side on a day that could see them emulate the success of the Spurs double winning side of ‘61.  Only Denham, who were last season's beaten finalists, could stop them.  Captain Flo Donald led the side on the pitch for the handshaking and pennant exchanging ceremony of a big event.

With two other Tottenham sides following on, the crowds were gathering and helping to create a cup final atmosphere. The girls always like to get an early goal to settle the nerves and were pushing Denham back from the off, which paid dividends when in the second minute Ronell Humes slotted home from a corner.

The Denham side were up for the big day and if the Tottenham side thought the goals were going to fly in they were wrong. On eight minutes, Denham replied when the Spurs defence was caught unprepared from the Denham keeper's long range kick reaching the Denham strikers, who quickly took advantage of the lack of Tottenham cover.

With game on, the Tottenham girls got their heads up straight away and looked for the opportunity to get ahead again. Their chance came three minutes later when captain Flo Donald got on the end of an Izzy Lancaster cross and chested home.

A menacing Rosie Johnson had a few chances at the spearhead of the attack to break away but wasn’t able to covert. Kally Ann Westgarth dominated the left wing and made some good linking play with Donald and Humes. Whilst Immy Lancaster looked nearly back on top form as she harried on the right.

Three minutes into the second half golden boot Ronell Humes netted her 28th goal of the season, when keeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich’s clearing kick found Humes in space on the left and with a swerve to the right she beat her marker and headed for goal.  With the Denham defence on her heels and with a one on one with the keeper the odds were always on for Ronell and she coolly took her chance to bag a brace.

However, the Denham side did not see themselves as down and out and continued to pressure the Spurs side and a defensive combination of Joely Harris Tharp, Emily Tibbs and Carlota Franques.  The Denham girls knew that one goal could change the game, but Elianne Mahay Goodrich looked strong in goal and was covered by the defence and a midfield who knew the importance of getting back to secure the game.

The second half was a tough one with the sun beating down and the temperature rising to 23 °C and being close to achieving so much. The Tottenham side were happy to hear the final whistle, finishing a fantastic season that soon saw them establish themselves as a side to be reckoned with. Nine months later their consistency has given them a league title and on the final day of the season their team spirit has seen them claim their second piece of silverware and walk proudly to collect their medals as ‘Double’ winners !

WELL DONE and all the best as you move forward to a new era and the 11 a side game !

Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur.

Away to Luton Town for the final game of the season saw Tottenham Hotspur Under 11 Whites needing nothing less than a win to take the title.  Late season pitch shortages saw the girls turn out on a bone dry surface that had ruts for touch lines, limited pitch markings, not to mention having a running track and shot putt lines within the pitch perimeter. The hardness of the ground was compensated by the length of the grass which had one girl asking why they were playing on a meadow !

Understanding the full weight of what needed to be done, nerves did not get the better of the girls and they went for it from the off and within five minutes had made themselves two goals to the good.  Both goals coming in the fifth minute the first from a run by winger Izzy Lewis, who looked at her most confident as she broke down the right and let fly with a fantastic shot that had the back of the net bulging.  From the kick off Kally Ann Westgarth picked up the ball on the left, beating the Luton defence and playing a one-two with captain Flo Donald, which saw Kally Ann find space to slot the ball home from a tight angle across the face of the goal into the right side of the goal.

An on fire Izzy Lewis connected decisively with the ball from a Ronnell Hume corner to hit her her second in the seventh minute.

Five minutes later the pressure from another corner, crossed from the right by Ronnell Humes, forced Luton into making an error as they tried to clear and saw the ball go in off the back of the head of a Luton defender and put the Tottenham side four up.

Tottenham could well have had more, especially when an on fire Emily Tibbs made a series of runs down the right that saw her find her way through half the length of the pitch without being dispossessed.  On the left Immy Lancaster nearly looked back to her creative old self after the effects of a tendon injury and up front Rosie Johnson pressured the Luton defence looking for her opportunity to slip thorough.

Although clearly from an early stage in the game Tottenham were in the driving seat, Luton did not lie down and especially in the second half put the defensive duo of Joely Harris Tharp and Carlota Franques under pressure and forced a few saves from keeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich, who played despite a bad thumb.

As the final whistle blew, captain Flo Donald and vice captain Joely Harris Tharp lead the celebrations with shaken up bottles of lemonade and the sticky girls did a lap of honour, whilst their parents and families toasted them with a bottle of something stronger.

Cameras snapped, hands were shaken and backs were patted to the ring of “Champions’.

Well done girls congratulations and onwards and upwards and on to the League Cup final next week and dreams of the double !

What started as an exciting day full of promise with the possibility of clinching the league title in the air ended in despondency for the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Under-11 Whites side.   Pre match entertainment included the sight of the home side’s management and parents attempting to erect the goal posts, which they finally managed to do in ‘It’s a Knockout style’!

Perhaps the girls were still in pre entertainment mode whilst the Enfield were side were keen to show themselves to be more adept than their parents, but whatever it was, they came out on the pitch with a spring in their step and the will to make sure that they would do all they could in their last match of the season to ensure that they still had a stake in the championship race.

Three minutes into the match, the Enfield side ripped into the Tottenham defence, drawing defenders to the left while a sharp shooter remained unchecked on the right to score.  The Spurs side held on through the first half and saw serious chances from Ronnell Humes and Rosie Johnson inch past the posts, but nothing would go in.  Rosie, who was awarded player of the match, continued to look sharp and the Enfield defence found it hard to deal with her height.

The Tottenham side were reminded at half time that they were 1-0 down to Enfield in their first encounter of the season with them and that they had gone on to bag the three points. However, it wasn’t to be and on the day normally stalwart defensive grouping of Carlota Franques and Joely Harris Tharp assisted by Emily Tibbs was breached a further three times.

Kally Ann Westgarth tried to break through down the left, but it was the Enfield left sided winger that caused the Spurs side so many problems and outpaced all who tried to stop her.  Immy Lancaster returning from injury was not her normal creative self and was still suffering the effects of a pulled tendon.

Enfield pressure on the Tottenham midfield ensured that captain Flo Donald and right winger Izzy Lewis had a hard time trying to push forward and then to get back.

Goalkeeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich had a tough time between the sticks and finally had to pick the ball out of the back of the net another three times in the second half giving Enfield a surprising 4-0 victory and the Tottenham side their first taste of defeat.

Title on hold for another week and as they say ‘squeaky bum time’ as Enfield edge two points ahead of Tottenham in the table and Tottenham having to go away to Luton and grab all three points to claim Enfield’s crown.

For the second week in a row one goal was enough to win for the Tottenham Hotspur Under-11 Whites and in this instance to send them through to the final of the Home Counties Girls League cup. The Blues came out strongly and had a clear desire to get the better of the Whites and worked hard to peg them back.  However Ronnell Humes always has an eye for a goal and on the 21st minute a throw into the box from captain Flo Donald reached Ronnell whose swerving shot hit the back of the net and upped her personal tally for the season to 25.

Carlota Franques was given a hearty welcome back by her team mates, who were glad to see her back after the volcanic ash cloud had kept her in Spain last weekend.  Carlota worked hard with fellow defenders Joely Harris Tharp and Emily Tibbs to keep the Blues strike force at bay and the trio managed to keep a clean sheet. This was aided by a solid performance by Elianne Mahay Goodrich including an excellent save on the 16th minute into the second half when a Blues striker lashed an on-target shot at the Whites goal.

Izzy Lewis was speedy on the right wing and her crosses and throw-in’s pressurised the Blues defence. On the left Kally Westgarth did a similar job linking up with Flo Donald and Ronnell Humes.

Striker Rosie Johnson took her chances and on several occasions found her way through the Whites last line of defence to head for goal but unfortunately her chances were snuffed out by some nifty action from the Blues keeper.

The Blues put up a strong opposition and went close to forcing extra time when an on the mark shot swerved off the line and ran out of play inches wide of the post. As the clock ticked down the Whites led by Captain Flo Donald example naturally fell back putting up the shutters and ensuring that they booked their place in the final against Denham United on May 22nd.

The Whites missed the creativity of the still injured Immy Lancaster, who, supporting from the sidelines, nominated the ever prominent Ronnell Humes as player of the match.

Depleted by injury, illness and absences due to holidays, the Spurs Ladies Under-11 Whites side took to the field with seven girls, including Izzy Lewis who wasn’t feeling well at all and who felt every knock and crunch but bravely soldiered on.  Luton sensed that the Tottenham side weren’t at their strongest and played better than their seventh place position in the league belied and were soon challenging a very commanding Joely Harris-Tharp in defence with team mate Emily Tibbs in front of keeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich.

It took the Tottenham side 11 minutes to score when Izzy Lewis made a clearance from the Tottenham goalmouth straight to top goal scorer Ronnell Humes, who took the ball down the left channel slicing a shot into the corner of the Luton goal. The Tottenham side then regained their composure and took command of the game for the rest of the half looking comfortable.

The Tottenham side came back on to the pitch still looking confident and Kally Ann Westgarth nearly upped the score when she ran down the left wing where she was being given acres of space and let fly with shot that just missed the target as it flew into the side netting.

10 minutes into the second half Luton breached the Tottenham defence and evened the score with a goal from a throw in breaking a run of nine games played with clean sheets going back to November 2009.  Unlike the Luton Town team, the referee wasn’t sponsored by ‘Specsavers’ and missed that the ball had gone in the net directly from the throw.  However, the ref’s decision is final and other than that his officiating was fair and he allowed the game to flow.

After the initial shock the goal served as a wake-up call to the Tottenham side that rallied together trying to regain the lead, whilst Luton buoyed by the goal battled to compete against the league leaders.  The Tottenham girls showed their grit and determination to win and much to the relief of the Tottenham faithful after a series of corners captain Flo Donald finally got her foot on a loose ball and buried it into the net with seven minutes to go.

Boosted by the goal the Tottenham girls really started to show their quality pulling off a string of superb passes that came close to them furthering their lead but in the end there was relief to hear the final whistle and know that only three more points are needed to clinch the title.

Injured Immy Lancaster turned up to support her team mates and a pre match run out confirmed that she was not fit to play. Watching from the sidelines Immy selected team captain Flo Donald as ‘player of the match’.  A good effort from all the girls’ special praise to an under the weather Izzy Lewis.

home counties girl's football league  - u11 cup quarter final
A trip to Enfield Town for a cup match was a welcome distraction from the league.  The Whites were lucky to have had a bye in the first round and to come straight into the quarter finals, but of course luck plays it part in any cup run.

Both teams were up for the game and the support on the sidelines was tinged with cup atmosphere. The Tottenham Under 11s Whites started strongly and on three minutes Ronell Humes shot just inches over the bar.  Four minutes later Immy Lancaster’s shot produced a parry from the Enfield keeper before they cleared their lines.

Both sides had their chances but solid defending from both teams kept the score sheet clean until 18 minutes into the game when Ronnell Humes picked up on a through ball, breaking clean and working her way between two Enfield defenders to just get the space she needed to shoot beating the keeper and to put the Tottenham side into the lead.

The Tottenham girls remained calm after their celebrations and got straight back into the game. Half time came early when the referee blew after 20 minutes and the jelly babies had to go back in the packet, as the sides were recalled to the pitch for a tense five minutes when it looked like Enfield might get even, but Tottenham held out and went back to the jelly babies and jaffa cakes a goal to the good.

Tottenham continued to keep their shape in the second half with captain Flo Donald controlling the centre midfield supporting the defence and providing opportunities to push forward. As the game progressed Flo naturally dropped further and further back to thwart the Enfield attacks.

The Enfield team pushed forward and were quick particularly on their forays down the right wing, but the defensive duo of Joely Harris-Tharp and Carlota Franques were too strong for them and left few opportunities for the Enfield strikers to break. Even though as the game progressed and time was running out for the home side they pushed more players forward and virtually stood in the goal. However this proved fruitless as the strength of the Tottenham midfield meant that the Enfield strikers were isolated.

In midfield Izzy Lewis put pressure on the Enfield defence as her long throw ins floated into the box and her runs down the right with excellent link up play with Flo Donald challenged the Enfield defence.  Kally Ann Westgarth worked well on the left tracking back and pushing forward and created an excellent chance towards the end of the first half that only just went wide.  Ronnell Humes worked hard up front and as the game progressed did a great job to cut out the threat from the Enfield right before it could it even could get started.  Rosie Johnson was a target to aim for either from the midfield or from some long range shots that came from the defence but the Enfield defence was strong and hard to beat.

The Tottenham girls were impressive all round, rising to the challenge and staying calm under considerable pressure, but the player of the match went to goal keeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich for the second week running as she commanded and repelled several very close calls to ensure that the Tottenham side march on and booked their place in the next round.

As was to be expected third in the league side Hampstead turned up and proved hard to beat, as Spurs Ladies Under-11s lined up at Fred Knights on Saturday morning.

Both sides were strong in all areas and a real battle took place in midfield, where Captain Flo Donald lead the push forward and worked hard with Emily Tibbs to block the Hampstead attacks.  Joely Harrris-Tharp and Carlota Franques worked tirelessly to cut out the Hampstead advances and dealt well with the pressure from the Hampstead forwards with the main pressure came from their attacks down the right.

12 minutes into the match Immy Lancaster connected with a flick on from Ronnell Humes and powerfully volleyed the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards, much to the relief of the Tottenham faithful.

The Whites got close to increasing the score with shots from Flo Donald, Ronell Humes and from goal-scorer Immy Lancaster but it wasn’t to be.  Wingers Kally Ann Westgarth and Izzy Lewis put pressure on the Hampstead defence with runs down the respective wings, but forwards Rosie Johnson and Ronnell Humes weren’t able to make the final connections to finish the game off.

As the game went on the pressure was at both ends with Tottenham and Hampstead having opportunities to break away.  However, both keepers were impressive and competently cut out any further scoring opportunities. Tottenham keeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich proved to be a safe pair of hands racing out to smother any loose balls and dealing competently with any spin on the ball in the wet conditions earning herself the player of the match award as the Tottenham side marched ever closer to title glory and their seventh clean sheet in a row.

Enfield Rangers visited Fred Knights for this HCGFL meeting with the Spurs Ladies Under-11 Whites on Saturday.

It only took Ronnell Humes three minutes to convert from an Immy Lancaster cross that had been cleared from the defence by Emily Tibbs, but it felt a long three minutes as Enfield came at the Tottenham side strongly in the initial stages.

Rangers continued to push forward and it took several close calls before Immy Lancaster put the side two goals ahead. In the 22nd minute captain Flo Donald, who had who had earlier come close when her shot when inches over the bar, got on the end of a corner floated in by Ronnell Humes to see the girls finish the half three goals to the good.

Ronell and Immy both doubled their tally in the second half when Ronell got on the end of a corner delivered by Immy five minutes in.  It took a further 15 minutes before Immy slotted home from a well worked pass between Kally Ann and Rosie to score the final goal of the game making it 5-0.

The defence had fairly quiet time of it but dealt well with any Rangers attacks and ensured another clean sheet.  Goalkeeper Elianne Mahay Goodrich pouncing quickly on several loose balls and at one point racing out to clear with a well timed kick.  Joely Harris Tharp was strong in defence and showed good awareness in coming out to clear the lines and with the strength of her kicks starting the midfield off on their way forward.  Carlota Franques dealt well with any potential danger and as ever was first to the ball.

Kally Westgarth exerted good pressure down the left and came close to getting on the score sheet.  Izzy Lewis worked the right wing effectively and got some excellent crosses both from her runs and throw ins.  Rosie Johnson looked sharp upfront and only just missed out on adding to the goal tally with several break away moves.

The player of the match was awarded to Emily Tibbs who excelled in defence and then later in the central midfield role.  Emily went in strongly on the ball, winning battles all over the park, also making some great runs through the middle to make her presence felt in attack.

Whatever the final score Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Under-10 Blues gave the Whites a run for their money, coming strongly at them from the off in this HCGFL match at Fred Knights.

Kally Ann Westgarth started up front with Immy Lancaster but soon had to revert to the left wing, as the Blues pushed the Whites back, Kally Ann continued to run the wing offering support up front and in defence. For much of the first half there was little between the sides with a strong midfield battle. As the half progressed it looked more and more like it would be one of those days when nothing would go in.

Shots from Immy Lancaster, Ronnell Humes and Rosie Johnson hit the post, hit the bar and skimmed inches wide. The teams left the pitch at half time with all square. The Whites keen to keep up the pressure at the top end of the table were soon back on the pitch and ready to make their mark not letting the game drift away from them. They wasted no time and from the kick off pushed forward with Ronnell Humes having a clear shot on goal and with a clinical precision slotted home. A wave of relief was felt throughout the team and by those on the side line.

Imbued with a new confidence, two minutes later Ronnell broke away again and hit home her second.  Under pressure from a revived Whites team, a Blues player handled in the area and the ref blew for a penalty.  Immy Lancaster grabbed the ball and with determination placed it on the spot stepped back and blasted into the back of the net.

Feeling assured at 3-0, the Whites looked confident and played some good passing football.  Flo Donald who sat out the first half not feeling well joined the team in the second half and she and Izzy Lewis got into a passing rhythm that saw Flo slot through the ball for Izzy to hold up and shoot decisively home from 15 yard and score the goal of the game.

Vice captain Joely Harris-Tharp took the armband for the match and looked impressive pushing up and had several shots just off target from outside the box.  Carlota Franques worked hard all game sticking doggedly to the Blues striker, making it impossible for her to influence the game and her commitment saw her earn the player of the match award.

Although there was little direct attack for keeper Elianne-Mahay Goodrich to deal with she was positive and strong and dealt firmly with anything that came her way.  Rosie Johnson threatened the Blues defence getting close to a break away on several occasions and Emily Tibbs had an excellent game finding herself in several different positions, right mid, centre mid and finally in defence managing to make her mark across the pitch.

Tottenham Under 11 Whites went on a goal feast improving on their win over Whetstone earlier in the season by bagging an extra two goals and scoring eleven in total.  The girls wasted no time and top goal scorer Ronnell Humes pounced on a spill form the Whetstone keeper and put the Spurs side ahead before two minutes were up. The Whetstone side worked hard but the Whites were just too strong for them.

Any attacks from Whetstone were firmly dealt with by captain of the day Joely-Harris Tharp.  Joely rose to the occasion and not only presented as a strong solo defender but also found her voice spurring  the girls on with her encouraging words and instructions.

Elianne Mahay Goodrich was not overly challenged in goal but kept her wits about her and dealt well with anything that came her way. Elianne also contributed to the start of a series of attacks when her long kicks found their targets.

Ronnell found the net again converting from a corner on seven minutes and followed this up to complete her hat trick when she slotted home from a Kally Ann Westgarth cross two minutes before half time.  Ronnell was even quicker from the off in the second half and hit her fourth 30 seconds after the restart.

Four minutes into the second half Izzy Lewis’s cross from the right hit a Whetstone defender and found it’s way into the net.

Emily Tibbs looked strong in central midfield and made several long runs pushing her way through the Whetstone defence and having come close on several occasions six minutes into the second half Emily took the ball wide of the keeper and cut back on an angle and put the ball past the keeper.

Rosie Johnson and Immy Lancaster’s goals also added to the tally. Immy’s coming from an upfield kick from Elianne finding Ronnell, whose pass to Immy found her with the space to slot home the third goal in eight minutes. Rosie scored a Rosie classic when her persistence meant she was in the right place to scramble the ball over the line 15 minutes into the second half.

All the girls were impressive but player of the match award had to go to Kally Ann Westgarth who scored twice in the first half, on 13 minutes when she got on the end of a clearance from Elianne and again in the dying seconds of the half when she took advantage of the Whetstone keepers clearance and hit the ball home on the bounce. Kally Ann then went on to score the last and arguably the best goal of the game when she drilled the ball in on the volley from a corner kick to clock up eleven and her complete her first hat trick of the season.
