Home Counties Girl's Football League  - Under-12 Division 1
This afternoon Spurs U12 Whites travelled to Harpenden and came away with a well deserved 2-1 victory.

Due to illness, the Spurs squad had three players missing, so Manager/Coach Peter Maynard drafted in two new players, Danielle Cunningham and Emma Tammaro, to make up the shortfall and they both produced outstanding displays on their debuts.

Spurs started the first half facing a strong wind and conceded a goal after only two minutes.  During the build up to the goal, one of the opposing attackers appeared to blatantly control the ball with her arm and almost everyone except the referee saw the offence.

It would have been understandable if the Whites' heads had gone down, but after six minutes they battled back.  Louise Waldock won the ball in midfield and found Rachel Brier just inside the penalty area with a glorious through ball.  Rachel ran on and fired in a shot which struck the post and then, following in her own shot, buried the rebound.

Emma had a couple of good runs down the left resulting in two good crosses in to the box and Claire Clough had a long range shot well saved by the Harpenden keeper.  The first half ended all square.

At half time Peter and coach Clive Bassett demanded a major improvement in the second half and the Whites responded with all the players gaining in confidence as the match went on.  This half was mainly all one way traffic with the Whites winning six corners with none against.

Lauren Holman produced another faultless performance in goal; her handling and distribution was superb and on two occasions, she dived bravely at opposing attackers feet as they bore down on goal.  The defence held firm and the midfield worked tremendously hard and won most of the 50-50 balls.

The winning goal came midway through the half, when Louise won a free kick on the right, Kathleen Jackson swung over a wicked cross which the Harpenden defence only half cleared.  Rhiannon Bassett running in, hit in a glorious left foot shot to give Spurs the three points.

Carly Mackey was rightly chosen as player of the match for her tenacious performance in defence, but once again special praise must be given to Danielle and Emma on their debuts.

Awaiting match report.

This morning Spurs U12 Whites were at home to Hemel Hempstead and Manager Peter Maynard and coach Clive Bassett had the luxury of selecting the team from a squad of 14 players, unlike last week, due to illness, when they only had eleven players.

The Whites started the game with only six of the squad having played together last season and this showed in the first twenty minutes as they tried to penetrate the Hemel defence, but to no avail.

Lauren Holman, as usual, instilled confidence in her defenders with her command of the penalty area and made a couple of good saves early on.  However, after ten minutes, Spurs went 1-0 down to a good goal by a Hemel striker.  A few minutes later it should have been 2-0 and probably game over, as an opposing attacker broke through, but Rhiannon Bassett made an exceptional last ditch tackle to concede a corner.

As the half went on Spurs started to produce some passing movements which ended in two good attempts on goal by Kathleen Jackson and Claire Clough.  Then in the final minute, Louise Waldock, who had worked tirelessly hard in midfield, won the ball on the left and found Shakira Waithe, who coolly lobbed the ball over the keeper from 14 yards to equalise.

This game was nearly a carbon copy of last week, with the Whites controlling the majority of the second half.  After eight minutes, Claire found some space just in the area on the left and curled an exquisite shot over the keeper and in to the top right hand corner of goal.

Kathleen, who had caused problems down the right for the Hemel defence since the interval, created a further two goals.  Firstly finding Shakira just inside the area, who ran on and buried a crisp low shot in to the bottom corner of the net.  Then not long after, she made a good run and cross, which ended with Alicia Michaels volleying home with virtually her first touch of the ball soon after coming on as a substitute.

At the end of the game, Peter awarded Shakira player of the match for her midfield performance and two stunning strikes. Well played The Whites, four breathtaking goals and we are now equal third in the league table.

Today Tottenham Hotspur Under-12 Whites were at home to Luton Town in the HCGFL and straight from the kick off, took control with some good passing movements which had the opposing defence on the back foot from the off.

After only four minutes, a fine through ball by Danielle Cunningham found Claire Clough, who instantly unleashed an unstoppable shot into the left hand corner of the net.  Four minutes later and Spurs were 2-0 up, with some smart play on the left side of the penalty area.  Shakira Waithe played the ball back to the on-running Kathleen Jackson, who chipped the ball over the keeper from fifteen yards - a superb move and finish.

The Whites were playing their best football of the season so far, any attacks the opposition had were comfortably dealt with by the home defence.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half continued as the first half, with Spurs dominating all areas of the pitch and with only three minutes played it was 3-0.  Emma Tammaro received the ball on the left hand side of midfield and found Claire just in side the penalty area with a delightful diagonal pass.  In an instant, Claire ran on and rounded the keeper and coolly slotted the ball home.

Luton had a couple of good moves ending with Lauren Holman making fine saves.  In the final quarter of the match the Whites became complacent and in a ten minute spell Luton scored two well taken goals.  This produced a worrying final two minutes, but Spurs held on to gain their third victory in a row.

Manager-Coach Peter Maynard awarded joint player of the match to Lauren and Claire for their match winning performances.  He went on to say that the girls are slowly finding their feet and beginning to reap the rewards from the tuition they are receiving from all the coaches.

Well done again Whites, they made hard work of it, but we are now joint second in the league.

Home Counties Girl's Football League  - Under-12 Division 1

This afternoon Spurs U12 Whites travelled up the A1 to Hatfield to play Harvesters and came away with all three points after a hard fought 3-2 victory.

The conditions were far from ideal, but Spurs coped admirably with the damp weather and the small sloping playing surface.  Lauren Holman once again had a competent game in goal, especially on two occasions when diving bravely at opposing forwards feet.  Rhiannon Bassett, Carly Mackey, Holly Dooling, Karla Simpson and Poppy Bennett were resolute in defence.  Rachel Brier, Shakira Waithe, Louise Waldock, Kathleen Jackson and Emma Tammaro were prominent in midfield. Claire Clough, Kiki Christofi and Player of the Match Melody Jones were a constant threat to the home defence.

The first goal came after seven minutes when Rhiannon, wide on the right, crossed the ball high in to the six yard box, their defence could only clear the ball to the edge of the area, Louise running forward, hit a glorious first time shot over the keeper.

Harvesters equalised with a well taken goal in the 25th minute.

In the second half, Spurs had the advantage of the slope and in the 17th minute of the half, the Whites took the lead.  Good work from Kathleen on the left wing resulted in a corner.  In the practice session prior to the match, coach Clive Bassett had the players practicing corner routines and this paid off when Kathleen whipped in her trademark in-swinging corner.  Under pressure, the keeper could only parry the ball into the path of Rachel, who volleyed the ball home from eight yards out. But, the lead only lasted four minutes when Harvesters broke away and equalised.

The tension was now unbearable, as the result could have gone either way.  But credit to the Whites, they battled on and grabbed the winner two minutes from full time.  Poppy, just inside her own half, played a marvellous defence splitting pass through to the on-running Mel, who from 12 yards out drilled the ball hard past the home keeper.

At the final whistle, manager/coach Peter Maynard and coach Clive Bassett, praised the Whites for their commitment and 100% effort.

This afternoon Spurs U12 Whites made the journey to Greenford to face Q.P.R., who were one place and three points above them in the league table.

The Whites had a dream start, with only one minute played Kathleen Jackson, midway in her own half, hit a long high ball over the Rangers central defenders to Melody Jones in the inside right channel.  Mel took the pass in her stride, raced on in to the area and drove the ball home from fifteen yards.

The home team responded with a couple of attempts on goal which Lauren Holman capably dealt with. The Spurs back four worked well as a unit, especially Kathleen who had been switched from her usual midfield role to partner captain Carly Mackey in central defence.  The midfield and strikers produced good passing moves against a well organised opposition.

Eight minutes before half time one of our players innocently mistimed a tackle on a Rangers player, the referee awarded a free kick and then showed no compassion and produced a yellow card.  In this, my second season of involvement with The Whites, it is the first time I have witnessed an official punishing a player so harshly, normally a lecture would be sufficient.

This action clearly affected the player and her team mates and two minutes before the break Q.P.R. equalised.  In the second half Spurs tried to regain their composure, but the booking had clearly upset our players and Rangers took the lead after seven minutes of the second half.

The Whites battled on bravely but try as they did could not draw level.  After the final whistle Manager-Coach Peter Maynard and Coach Clive Bassett congratulated all the players on their performances and could not single out a Player of the Match.

Today Spurs U12 Whites faced top of the league Spurs U12 Blues at Fred Knights Sports Ground.  The last time they played each other was in the THLFC Tournament last June when The Whites defeated The Blues in the final to lift the Senior Hargreaves Trophy.

This time, the Blues came out on top, though the four nil result was not a true reflection of the game, as two nil would have been a fairer outcome. I n defence, Lauren Holman in goal and the backline of Rhiannon Bassett, Carly Mackey, Kathleen Jackson, Jenny Hunnable and Poppy Bennett frustrated the usually free-scoring Blues strikers; the midfield of Louise Waldock, Shakira Waithe, Danielle Cunningham, Rachel Brier and Emma Tammaro worked tremendously hard, and up front, Claire Clough, Melody Jones and Kiki Christofi kept the opposing defenders on their toes.

This season the teams have had to make the change from seven to eleven a side and a full size pitch, and after this encounter both sets of players can be proud of their performances.  The Whites even more so, as during the Summer break Manager-Coach Peter Maynard and Coach Clive Bassett had to rebuild their squad after the transfers of our Captain and Vice Captain to The Blues and the loss of two other influential players due to other commitments.  Only six players remain from last season and with the addition of five new signings plus three from the under eleven teams the progression after only eight matches is quite remarkable.

After the final whistle, Peter and Clive were full of praise for all their players, the commitment, enthusiasm and team spirit was outstanding.  Player of The Match was awarded to Jenny, who, on her debut, produced a faultless display in defence.

This morning Spurs U12 Whites were at home to Cambridge City and after last week's encouraging performance against the Blues, hopes were high for a positive result.  On the opening day of the season this fixture ended in a 3-1 victory for City and sadly this corresponding game produced the same result due to a lacklustre first half by the Whites.

For the first fifteen minutes neither side created any chances worth noting, but in the next quarter Spurs conceded three goals.

In the second half the Whites at last began to show some urgency in their play and even though they had the majority of possession, they failed to force the City keeper in to making a save.  Then ten minutes from time City conceded a free kick twenty five yards from goal, under instruction from Manager-Coach Peter Maynard, Player of the Match Carly Mackey thundered in a ferocious shot which the keeper did well to parry, but Poppy Bennett pounced and drove the loose ball home from ten yards for her first goal of the season.

At full time Peter and Coach Clive Bassett complimented the team on their vast improvement in the second half and demanded more of the same next week.

Harpenden were Spurs Whites U12 Whites opponents this morning at Fred Knights Sports Ground and we returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 victory

Straight from the kick off Spurs dominated the play with some fine passing moves and it was no surprise when we took the lead in the ninth minute.  A corner taken on the right by Claire Clough found Poppy Bennett who drove the ball home from six yards.  Soon after Poppy nearly added a second, but the keeper made a good save. Then another lovely move ended with  Melody Jones adding the final pass to Emma Tamarro who shot just wide of the target.

After seventeen minutes the Whites added a second goal.  Claire was again the provider, her pass was rifled in from eight yards out by Kiki Christofi.  The visitors were under relentless pressure and a ball in to their goalmouth was only cleared to the edge of the area, Jenny Hunnable was first to react and her thunderous shot rattled the post and rebounded to safety.  Then another corner taken by Claire was again only half cleared to Carly Mackey who hit a screamer which the keeper did well to save.  A surging run through the middle by Louise Waldock ended with her shooting narrowly wide and on the stroke of half time Claire was unlucky when her shot whistled past the upright.

The second half was mainly all one way traffic as in the first half, Lauren Holman in goal was rarely troubled, the back four of Rhiannon Bassett, Carly, Kathleen Jackson and Jenny, stifled the Harpenden strike-force; the midfield of Rachel Brier, Shakira Waithe, Louise, Danielle Cunningham, Poppy and Emma completely controlled the central area and the strike-force of Claire, Kiki and Mel tormented their defence. A sublime through-ball by Rachel ended with Kiki driving the ball inches past the post, then Shakira finished off a fine move, with Claire yet again providing the final pass to make it 3-0.

Two minutes from time Shakira's effort on goal was only parried by the keeper and Emma coolly stroked home the loose ball from an acute angle to make it 4-0.  The corner count was ten for with none against and possession, Spurs - 70% to Harpenden- 30%, these statistics show how comprehensive this performance by the Whites was.

Manager- Coach Peter Maynard and Coach Clive Bassett praised their team for a wonderful display and named Louise - Player of the Match.
