Home Counties Girl's Football
League - Under-12 Cup - Group C |
|
This afternoon the
whites faced Enfield Town in a Group C League Cup match. The weather
was atrocious with a strong wind and driving rain, but luckily the
game was on the all weather surface at White Hart Lane.
The Whites were under
pressure from the off against last year's cup winners and in the
first half, we could hardly put more than two passes together or had
any efforts on goal. Spurs were lucky only to be 2-0 down at half
time, due mainly to Lauren Holman's fine display in goal, which
earned her player of the match.
The pep talk at half
time by Peter and Clive inspired a marked improvement by Spurs, but
the Enfield defence held firm and their keeper made two fine saves
from Claire Clough. But late in the game, the away team
managed to break away and score a third goal.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League - Under-12 Cup - Group C |
|
This morning Spurs U12
Whites travelled to North West London to play Division Two leaders
and so far unbeaten Headstone Manor in Group C of the league cup.
This was their first game for a month due to a postponed match and
the Christmas break and also the first game in charge for recently
appointed Manager and Coach, Clive Bassett.
The first fifteen
minutes of the game was quite even with neither side able to
penetrate each others defences, then Spurs took hold of the play and
had the majority of the possession and after twenty two minutes took
the lead. Louise Waldock, who so far had been outstanding with
her all action midfield display, won the ball midway in the opposing
half, looked up and then split the home backline with a glorious
pass to Melody Jones who, from twelve yards, fired an unstoppable
shot, which arrowed high in to the net.
At half time Clive
praised the girls for their major improvement in the last 15 minutes
of the first half and in the second period The Whites continued
where they had left off, Lauren Holman in goal was having her usual
confident game, especially when called upon to leave her area to act
as an extra defender to clear two long through balls up-field when
faced with onrushing opposition attackers. The back line of Rhiannon
Bassett, Carly Mackey, Kathleen Jackson, Poppy Bennett and Jenny
Hunnable ably dealt with any attacks by Headstone. The interchanging
midfield of Emma Tammaro, Rachel Brier, Shakira Waithe, Holly
Dooling and Louise controlled the middle of the park and the
strike-force of Mel and Kiki Christofi kept their defenders busy
with intelligent running off the ball.
In the seventeenth
minute Spurs took a well deserved two goal lead, Rhiannon collected
the ball on the half way line and set off on a thirty yard run down
the right flank showing tremendous ball control as well as avoiding
two despairing tackles, she then crossed the ball to Kiki, who was
on the corner of the six yard box with her back to goal. Kiki
spun on a sixpence and drove the ball in to the far bottom corner, a
truly well made and executed goal.
Then a few minutes later
Louise narrowly missed the target when her strike whizzed past the
post and then we had two corners in quick succession but Headstone
managed to clear the ball away on both occasions. Then on the hour
mark with the Whites, assuming they had won the game, allowed
Headstone to break away and score what we thought would be a
consolation goal. But no, disaster was to follow, the referee
somehow allowed four minutes of injury time and with the last kick
of the match the opposition snatched a draw.
At the end of the game
Clive complimented all his players for their performances but
singled out Louise as Player of the Match for her superb midfield
display.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League Under-12 Cup - Group C |
This
afternoon Spurs U12 Whites played Harpenden Jays in a Group C League
Cup match and came away with a 4-0 victory.
The
Whites commanded this game from start to finish against The Jays,
who despite only having ten players fought bravely throughout. The
corner count was fourteen for with none conceded and Spurs had so
much possession that goalkeeper Lauren Holman only touched the ball
twice.
The back
four of Rhiannon Bassett, Carly Mackey, Kathleen Jackson and Poppy
Bennett comfortably dealt with the few attacking threats by the
opposition. The first goal came in the sixth minute and was
the result of a wonderfully worked corner routine. Kiki
Christofi took the kick and intelligently found Poppy on the left
hand angle of the penalty area. Poppy drove a diagonal pass to
Rachel Brier, who passed the ball first time to Louise Waldock who
shot past the keeper from eight yards.
The
Whites scored their second two minutes from half time, the result of
a powerful central midfield run by Shakira Waithe, her through-ball
found Emma Tammaro, who astutely rounded the keeper and slotted the
ball in to the empty net.
The
second half was again all one way traffic but we had to wait twenty
minutes for the third goal. A throw in on the right was
collected and crossed in to the box by Kiki to Emma who fired the
ball home. The fourth came six minutes later, a long ball out
of defence was well controlled and passed on by Melody Jones to Kiki
who drilled the ball in from ten yards.
In
between the goals shots rained in on the Jays goal by Poppy, Kiki,
Louise, Rachel and Mel which were either well saved by the keeper or
just missed the target. The highlights of the game though were
produced by Rhiannon, who was named Player of the Match for her five
marauding thirty yard runs down the right flank, the way she kept
control of the ball while in full flight, evading tackles en route
and all resulting in either a corner or a pass or cross to a team
mate, it was a joy to witness.
After
the game Manager-Coach Clive Bassett praised all his players, but he
was slightly disappointed that the Whites dominance of the match did
not produce more goals.

This afternoon Spurs U12
Whites were at home to Q.P.R. and due to illness and injuries only
had eleven players available, with new signing Jade O'Brien making
her debut up front alongside Melody Jones in a 4-4-2 formation.
In the first half, the
Whites battled hard against the once again well organised Rangers
team and have to be complimented on holding them to 0-0. Most
of the play was condensed into the middle third of the park with
neither side creating any clear cut chances.
One minute after the
break Rangers broke away and scored, then added a further two goals
after eight and sixteen minutes of the half. The closest Spurs came
to scoring was when Emma Tammaro controlled a poor goal kick and
fired just wide from fifteen yards.
Manager-Coach Clive
Bassett named Louise Waldock player of the match for her tireless
work-rate and also well done to Jade who had an impressive debut.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League Under-12 Cup - Group C |
|
This week Spurs returned
to HCGF League Cup action against Hemel Hempstead and needed to win
to progress to the quarter finals. Once again, the Whites had
a depleted squad and could only field nine players and started the
game with a three-four-one formation, although twenty five minutes
into the match one more player arrived; late due to traffic
problems.
Like last week, Spurs
started well (even with two players short). Shakira Waithe,
playing in defence, made a great run from the back, leaving opposing
players in her wake, but her pass into the penalty area was
frantically cleared out for a throw in. The Whites were
gaining in confidence and as always Lauren Holman commanded her
penalty area. The back three of Shakira, Carly Mackey and Poppy
Bennett held their line well and thwarted any attacks the opposition
offered. The midfield of Louise Waldock, Rachel Brier, Emma
Tammaro and Jade O'Brien controlled the centre of the park and
Melody Jones and Kiki Christofi chased and harried up front giving
the Hemel defenders no time on the ball whatsoever.
The pressure finally
paid off in the twenty second minute, a long kick by Lauren found
Louise, who crossed into the area for Mel to strike the ball first
time. The keeper did well to get a hand to it, but such was the
power of the shot could not prevent it crossing the line. One
minute later and it was 2-0, Shakira won the ball in midfield, ran
on past two defenders and passed to Mel, who, from ten yards, hit
another blistering shot into the top right hand corner leaving their
keeper clutching at fresh air.
The second half was
mainly contested in midfield and understandably Spurs began to tire;
our only effort on goal was a tremendous cross shot from Kiki from
out on the right, which just whistled past the far post.
After the match acting
Manager-Coach Peter Maynard praised everyone for their work-rate and
skills and awarded Emma Player of the Match for her endeavours up
and down the left side of the pitch.

Home Counties Girl's Football

This afternoon Spurs
made the journey up the M1 to play Hemel Hempstead and even
though we had the rare luxury of a squad of fourteen players,
the Whites lost this encounter 3-1.
For the first ten
minutes it looked like Spurs would have back to back wins
against Hemel. The girls were well on top and forced three
corners in quick succession, but Hemel broke away and took the
lead.Spurs
responded well and equalised after twenty minutes. Tricky
wing play by Emma Tammaro on the left resulted in a cross which
found Claire Clough unmarked in the box. As she tried to
take the ball round their keeper, she was brought down for a
penalty. Claire picked herself up and cracked the spot
kick high into the net.
The second half was
pretty even, but Hemel took the points with two goals in a ten
minute spell, one a tremendous shot from the edge of the area
and the other a lucky deflection from a corner.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League - Under-12 Cup quarter final |
|
Today the Under-12
Whites made the long trek to Harlington near Heathrow Airport for
the Cup Quarter Final tie with Q.P.R. Again, Spurs only had
the bare eleven players and with only six minutes played a Rangers
player, receiving the ball from a throw in, turned quickly on the
synthetic pitch and fell to the ground in agony. The referee stopped
play immediately and players from both teams were clearly upset.
An ambulance was called for, but it took thirty minutes to arrive,
when the accident happened nearly everyone thought it was a broken
leg, but we later found out the girl had twisted her knee. We
wish her a speedy recovery.
The match had been
delayed for forty five minutes and the referee informed everyone
that the game would now be reduced to 25 minutes each way.
The delay seemed to
affect Spurs more than the home side and Rangers had successive
attacks both ending in brave saves by Lauren Holman diving out at on
rushing attacker's feet to thwart certain goals. Then in a
fifteen minute spell Rangers scored three goals. We only had a
couple of attacks with Claire Clough forcing their keeper to make
good saves.
At half time,
Manager-Coach Clive Bassett demanded more commitment in the second
half and the side responded well and started to pass the ball around
well. Six minutes into the half Carly Mackey was injured in
making a tackle and left the pitch for treatment returning after
fifteen minutes. The Whites soldiered on and came close to
pulling a goal back when a move involving Kiki Christofi, Melody
Jones and Claire Clough ended with Claire driving a shot against an
upright. Five minutes from time, Q.P.R. broke away and sealed
victory with their third goal.
Clive commented after
the tie how pleased he was in the way the team responded to his half
time talk and awarded Shakira Waithe 'Player of The Match' for her
central midfield display, but also mentioned how well Danielle
Cunningham had played in an unfamiliar role at left back.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League - Under-12 Division 1 |
After another two weeks
without a game, which has now become the norm, the Under-12 Whites
travelled up the M1 to play Luton Town. At least this week
Manager/Coach Clive Bassett had the luxury of a squad of 12 players
in which to choose from.
Before the match
Clive told the team that they must bounce back from the
disappointment of their previous match in which they lost to Q.P.R in
the quarter final of the cup and respond they did with a resounding
5-1 victory, with the first half performance matching, if not
better, than any other this season.
It took twenty minutes
to break the ice and was the result of a corner on the right taken
by Claire Clough. Emma Tammaro was the first to react at the
near post and thumped the ball into the top right hand corner of the
net. A minute later it was 2-0, after a good move right from the
back. Out on the right wing, Claire threaded a lovely ball
through the Hatters defence to the on running Jade O'Brien in the
inside right channel and from 12 yards Jade hit a ferocious shot
into the left hand corner of the net giving their keeper no chance -
her first goal for the club and a memorable one too.
In the second half the
Whites carried on where they had left off and after five minutes it
was 3-0 and virtually game over. Emma Tammaro swung over an inviting
right wing cross to the near post on the angle of the six yard box.
Melody Jones was first to the ball and her shot was brilliantly
saved by the keeper, but Mel reacted quickly and hit the loose ball
high into the net. The fourth came five minutes later. Jade's
strike on goal was pushed out by the keeper only for one of their
defenders to handle the ball. Claire Clough confidently buried
the resulting penalty. Three minutes later Luton scored a
consolation goal, but within two minutes it was 5-1 after nifty
footwork by Kiki Christofi on the right saw her cross the ball to
the near post to Melody Jones who drove another first time shot into
the top right hand corner.
The Whites had produced
probably their finest performance of the season. Lauren Holman
named player of the match for another commanding performance in
goal; the back four of Rachel Brier, playing out of position at
right back, Rhiannon Bassett, Carly Mackey and Poppy Bennett held
the line well and frustrated the Luton attack, often catching them
offside. The midfield of Claire Clough, Shakira Waithe, Louise
Waldock and Emma Tammaro won nearly all of the 50-50 balls and
controlled the centre of the park. Melody Jones, Kiki
Christofi and Jade O'Brien in attack gave their defence a torrid
time.
All in all a masterly
performance, well done girls.

After another weekend
without a game this week the Under-12 Whites travelled to
Buckinghamshire to play high flying Denham United and again only had
eleven players available.
The Whites were under
pressure from the kick off and the home team, inspired by their
exceptional midfield playmaker, had the game won within the first
twenty five minutes with three well taken goals and they sealed
victory with a penalty midway through the second half.
The Whites only created
two real chances; one, when, after a brilliant run by Shakira
Waithe, ended with Claire Clough cracking a shot against the
crossbar from eighteen yards and the other came from a corner which
produced a frantic goalmouth scramble ending in Shakira's shot
shaving the upright.
The score would have
been greater though if it wasn't for the heroics of Player of the
Match Lauren Holman who made many fine saves to deny the opposition.

This morning the
Under-12 Whites faced title contenders and probably the best team in
the league Enfield Town at Fred Knight's Sports Ground. Yet
again, Manager-Coach Clive Bassett had major problems with only nine
players at the start of the match and goalkeeper Lauren Holman was
also absent. A tenth player arrived twenty five minutes into
the match, but the damage had been done by then.
This was the hottest day
of the year so far and Enfield were able to use their fourteen
player squad by rotating their players, giving each of them a rest
in this extreme heat. They scored five goals in each half and
it would have been more if not for Player of the Match Claire
Clough, who was deputising in goal. Claire was very brave and
made some excellent saves.
Also praise to the rest
of the team who, in spite of everything, gave their all.

Home Counties Girl's Football
League - Under-12 Division 1 |
This afternoon the
Under-12 Whites played their final game of the season at home to
Harvesters L.F.C.
Spurs started brightly,
forcing the play in the oppositions half. After five minutes,
a good move involving Louise Waldock and Claire Clough ended with a
fierce shot by Claire, which was pushed round the post for a corner
by their keeper. Then Harvesters had two bouts of attacking play
both ending in good saves by Lauren Holman.
Spurs took the lead in
the twelfth minute. A long ball into the penalty area caused
confusion in the Harvesters defence and Melody Jones capitalised and
hammered the ball into the roof of the net from six yards. A
minute later and it was 2-0. Shakira Waithe won the ball in
midfield and ghosted past two players, then passed the ball on to
Kiki Christofi, who, without breaking her stride, drove the ball
home from ten yards. Two minutes later and it was 3-0, as
Rachel Brier won a tackle on the half way line and hit a long ball
to Claire Clough, who had her back to goal on the edge of the
penalty area. Claire controlled the pass, spun round and
lobbed the keeper all in one swift movement. This was a
sparkling display of attacking football by the Whites and they
continued in the same vein for the remainder of the half. On
the stroke of half time it was 4-0. In another mix up in the
Harvester's defence, Jade O'Brien found the ball at her feet and
shot at goal, the keeper did well to parry the shot but Claire
following up stroked the ball in to the net.
The second half was much
the same, mainly all one way traffic, Lauren's handling in goal was
faultless, the back four, Rachel Brier, Rhiannon Bassett, Carly
Mackey and Poppy Bennett won virtually every tackle and distributed
the ball on well to their fellow midfielders. The midfield of Emma
Tammaro, Louise Waldock, Shakira Waithe, Claire Clough and Danielle
Cunningham made some delightful passing moves and tracked back when
necessary to help the defence. The strike force of Kiki Christofi,
Melody Jones and Jade O'Brien all made intelligent runs off the ball
and generally caused mayhem in the opposing half not giving
Harvester's defenders a minutes peace.
The half only produced
one more goal, a corner on the right taken by Claire was cleared to
Rachel midway in their half on the right. Rachel ran on to the
edge of the area and crossed to the far post, where Emma raced in
and struck the ball home from six yards to round off a tremendous
all round team display.
After the final whistle,
Manager-Coach Clive Bassett stood proud and was full of praise for
his team stating that he could not single out any one player as
Player of the Match because everyone of the girls were superb.
This season has been one
of highs and lows, making the transition from seven a side to eleven
a side, losing two established players to the Blues, an influx of
nine new players, two of whom left after only a few matches.
We also supplemented the squad with Poppy Bennett and Emma Tammaro
from the Under-11 team, both of whom played well above expectation,
especially having to play two games in a weekend. Also Jenny
Hunnable from the Under-11s played on a couple of occasions.
Then midway through the season Peter Maynard stepped down as
Manager, due to other commitments, leaving Clive Bassett to solely
take charge managing and coaching the team - a role he took in his
stride and coped admirably with considering all of the above plus
injuries to players. The many games which were postponed,
including the ten week period when we only played four matches.
Clive's only weakness was his passion for Manchester United, but
then again we all have our faults.
This match today was
obviously one of the highs, that is the beauty of this wonderful
game, the performance and passion left all of the players, Clive and
all the parents with high expectations for next season.
