Its was a
pleasant day for the first home fixture of the season against Belmont
United in the HCGFL.
Belmont
started the better of the two sides and were pushing hard down the
Tottenham right. Tianna Carrington and Vicki Blake got the ball
away and it was very much a midfield battle with Alexa Rangecroft
getting stuck in.
Nina
Pontes delivered a good through ball to Tori Tripp on the right and her
shot unfortunately found the goal keeper. Becca Dowling was battling
high up the pitch on the right and delivered a good cross to Nina whose
shot went over the top. Tianna was very solid at the back and Bobbi
Cubberley was working really hard battling away up the front, firing in
a shot, which once again was well held by the Belmont keeper.
Belmont were however dangerous and they broke down the right, then
switched the play and Lily Tyrimos had to make a very good point blank
save to stop a certain goal. The girls however were piling on the
pressure with Alexa in the middle and Tori showing great speed and skill
down the right hand side, she just couldn’t quite complete the final
touch.
The
defence of Tianna, Vicki, Saskia Collins and Becca were keeping Belmont
at bay and Alexa and Charlotte McLucas were looking to create something
in the middle of the park. Nina had a great turn and shot at goal,
which was once again well saved by the keeper, while Tori was lighting
fast down the right and once again she had a shot, but the keeper saved
it.
Charlotte passed the ball to Nina who had a looping shot which just went
wide of the post. Tottenham were putting Belmont under a lot of
pressure, it was a shame therefore when Belmont broke down the left, had
a shot which Lily saved but couldn’t quite hold and Belmont followed it
up to make it 1-0 just before half-time.
Alexa
had an early strike at goal in the second half, but, not for the first
time, the Belmont keeper saved it. Vicki was battling well at the
back and pushed a good ball out to Lydia who was looking for some space
down the left.
Belmont continued to press down the Spurs right, but the girls were
covering well and steered any danger away. Tottenham won a corner and
Charlotte delivered a good cross which fell to Alexa whose looping shot
hit the cross bar and bounced out with the keeper catching the rebound.
You then knew it was going to be one of those days.
Laura
Newby delivered a good ball through to Lydia, who had a shot at the
keeper, but once again she held it well. Charlotte had a shot which the
keeper pushed off for a corner. The girls were playing much better
football but couldn’t quite find the breakthrough.
Finally the deadlock was broken when Laura, in the middle of the box,
stroked the ball towards the goal, it bounced off the post and this time
went into the back of the net. The girls were now piling on the
pressure with a shot from Tori saved and a shot from Becca going wide of
the mark. Bobbi had a shot which hit the cross bar, bounced on the
line and was cleared away by a Belmont player.
Hollie
Watson came on to join the defence and still the girls pushed forward.
Lydia Maher had a shot which was saved by the keeper. Belmont thought
they had scored, but the referee blew for an offence against Lily in the
box. Despite all the pressure the girls couldn’t quite find the
breakthrough and it ended 1-1. Well done to the Belmont keeper who
had a blinding game.
Player
of the match went to Becca. This is going to be a tough season and
looking at other results it will be a much more open contest this year.
The girls are still learning how all they all play and it may take a few
matches before they truly show what they are capable of.

After one
loss and one draw, what would the HCGFL away match with Denham bring ?
The girls
started like they meant business from the first whistle and within one
minute they very nearly scored. Tori Tripp delivered a high lofted
ball into the area, which the keeper couldn’t quite hold and Laura Newby
got there first, but couldn’t quite strike the ball properly as it was
bouncing around. Charlotte McLucas on the right found Nina Pontes
in the middle who on this occasion couldn’t get her shot away.
Vicki
Blake was defending nicely at the back and the girls were comfortable in
dealing with any Denham attacks, which weren’t coming further than the
Spurs midfield most of the time. The girls were piling on the
pressure and had camped themselves well & truly in the Denham half.
Tori was charging down the right hand side crossing good balls in, which
Bobbi Cubberley, Laura and Nina couldn’t quite bury. The
breakthrough came when Rebecca Dowling went up for a corner, from which
the ball spun out to her and she left fly with her shot. It
deflected off a Denham defender into the back of the net to make it 1-0
to Tottenham after six minutes.
Spurs
were dominating the game, Nina found some great space on the right
and her shot was well saved by the Denham keeper. There were some
excellent passing moves between Alexa Rangecroft, Bobbi, Laura,
Charlotte, Tori and Nina and they were really causing problems all over
the park. In an effort to put even more pressure on Denham, Vicki came
off at the back and was replaced by Lydia Maher, who went into a third
striker role. Unfortunately Rebecca had a head injury and was replaced
by Shoshana Field at the back.
Tianna
Carrington was clearing up at the back beautifully and she went on her
own expedition from the deep with the ball, as she glided past a number
of players before she off-loaded the ball to one of the strikers.
The girls kept pressing forward and Nina had a couple of chances which
just went wide, with even Saskia Collins charging through the middle to
smash the ball towards goal, which was well held by the Denham keeper.
Tori delivered a great cross to Nina whose shot went wide and Bobbi did
the same a few minutes later to Laura whose shot crashed off the
crossbar.
No one
could quite believe the score was only one nil at half time given the
fantastic football that had been played by Spurs and the chances that
had been created.
Denham
came out for the second half and were holding Spurs in the midfield
area. They did break through, but Shoshana put her foot in at the
last minute and cleared the danger away, before the Denham striker could
unleash her shot. It was a real midfield battle, with Alexa in the
thick of it with Charlotte battling hard down the left.
Goal
number two came when Tori sprinted down the right hand side and drilled
the ball towards the goal. The keeper parried the ball away, but
right into the path of Nina, who buried it in the back of the net.
Still
Denham didn’t give up, but Saskia was undertaking an excellent job on
the left of defence, using her pace to clear any dangerous runs and
really getting stuck into the role. The girls were battling some
majestic football and Jade Finch had now come on to link up with Lydia
and Nina up front.
Alexa
pushed up from midfield and had a crack at goal from the left, which
just whistled past the post and Nina had a shot which was well saved by
the keeper. Still Denham were dangerous and Tianna and Saskia
delivered a true lesson in defending when Denham broke through, Tianna
sprinted back to intercept and Saskia sweetly took the ball away from
the striker.
Still
the girls drove forward and once again Nina had a shot at goal, which
was well saved. A moment later and Jade broke through the middle
of the park, she let fly with a shot which smashed against the crossbar
and dropped in front of Nina, who took the chance by firing the ball
into the back of the net to make it 3-0 with some 15 minutes to go.
It was
almost four nil soon after, but Lydia was adjudged to have been offside
as she drilled the ball into the back of the net.
Lily
Tyrimos was called into action towards the end and had to make two
saves, which were her first of the game, from long range shots.
Saskia had to undertake more excellent defending and Nina had a good
shot turned wide, before the whistle blew for full time.
The
girls had put on a very impressive display with their fluid passing
game, which was a pure joy to watch. If they continue to play like that,
then they should give any team in the league a run for their money.
Excellent stuff, well done girls and special congratulations to Nina who
won player of the match for the first time in her short Spurs career.

Spurs
Ladies Under-13s started their latest HCGFL match with a sharpness of
touch and pace that left Stevenage knowing they were going to have their
work cut out from the off.
Tori
Tripp was gliding down the left, eating up the ground at pace, the first
attack produced a scramble in the Stevenage area, with Charlotte McLucas
and Bobbi Cubberley involved, but it was finally cleared away.
Nina Pontes was creating some great space in the middle of the park,
using her skill and strength, with Becca Dowling and Lydia Maher linking
up on the right. Nina had a shot which just went wide of the mark and
Alexa Rangecroft was like a whirling dervish in the midfield, cutting
through a number of the opposition.
The
first goal was an excellent lofted ball from a corner by Charlotte which
found Nina, who jumped like a gazelle and thumped the ball into the back
of the net with her head. It was to be her best goal of the day,
scored after just seven minutes. Tianna was producing some solid
clearances from the back and Nina produced a super run through the
middle, to drill the ball passed the keeper and make it 2-0 after just
eight minutes.
Vicki
Blake was clearing the ball well in the middle of defence and Tori sped
up the left to cross the ball to Nina, who buried it in the goal to
produce her hat-trick after just 10 minutes.
The
girls were on top and started to lift their foot off the gas, which
started to let Stevenage back into the game, Alexa and Charlotte were
helping out at the back and Sasika Collins was using her pace to keep
the door shut on the left hand side.
Bobbi
had a good run, which resulted in her shot just going over the top of
the bar and Tori was piling on the pressure, having a shot saved by the
keeper. Stevenage however were pushing forward and a through ball
saw Lily Tyrimos drive bravely on the ball to ensure that the Borough
striker didn’t get a shot in.
Bobbi
drilled a nice ball through to Lydia who ran at pace on the right and
crossed the ball to create a scramble in the box with Charlotte and
Tori’s shots being saved. The Spurs team were slicing Stevenage
apart with their pin-point passing and Bobbi produced a sublime lofted
cross to Lydia who smashed it into the back of the net with a half
volley to make it 4-0.
Shoshana Field had come on for Alexa as she was injured and Hollie
dropped into the defence as Becca moved up on the right to replace
Charlotte. The girls continued to push forward and held the position
well at the back to go in 4-0 at half time.
Jade
Finch had come on at half time and made her presence felt early on, by
dashing through the middle to thump the ball into the back of the net
for 5-0 within a minute of the re-start. Alexa had come back on a
had a shot to test the keeper fairly early on.
Vicki
was very strong in the middle of the park and delivered header after
header to keep the ball away from the defence, while Lydia was cutting a
dash up front and crossed the ball to Bobbi whose shot just whistled
over the top. Hollie delivered a good ball through to Bobbi who
flicked it on to Lydia, whose shot went whistling into the goal to make
it 6-0.
Spurs
were dominating the game and Nina burst through the middle at pace and
her shot rocketed into the goal to make it 7-0. Once again Alexa
had a long range shot which tested the keeper. Hollie was
intercepting the ball well and Jade was getting stuck in up front.
Blerta Berisha came
on to start her first game for the club and straight away was showing
what a tricky little player she is. She had a shot early on which
was well saved by the keeper. Lydia was on the right and had a
great shot at goal which the keeper did really well to tip over the
bar.
Blerta
was dashing down the left, beat a couple of players for skill and
delivered a lovely cross into the box which Lydia put just over the bar
on this occasion. Jade delivered her second goal, when she muscled
her way through the middle to make it 8-0. Hollie had a long range
shot which was saved by the keeper, then fellow defender Tianna
Carrington burst out of defence and delivered a lovely ball to Hollie,
who drilled it through to Jade. The midfielder passed it to Tori
who smashed it away to make it 9-0. This was some outstanding
football.
Blerta
was causing all sorts of problems down the left, especially as she is
naturally left footed. Once again Tianna broke out of defence to
go on an expedition up front and she passed the ball through to Nina,
whose shot was just pushed wide by the keeper.
Shoshana was working really hard in defence on the left and was ensuring
that not much got passed her. Hollie produced another lofted shot,
which the strikers very nearly got on the end of. Blerta was
dancing through the middle of the park and was linking well with Alexa
and Jade who were battling to find the next goal.
Shoshana continued to keep
Stevenage at bay on the left with Hollie doing the same on the right.
Blerta’s just reward came when she sweetly struck a left footed shot
into the back of the net to make it 10-0.
The
entire squad had been used today and every one of them did themselves
proud. Player for the match went to Blerta which is excellent news given
that this was her debut match for the team. I was dizzy by the end
of the match trying to remember all the changes and write down all the
goals, but I certainly didn’t mind.
Well
done girls an outstanding result, which showed true skill, flair and
determination, with all the subs coming on with hunger and passion to
succeed.

There was
a slightly later start today for the girls to welcome Buckden girls, who
are new to the league this season.
Nina Pontes had the first
opportunity looking to find Tori Tripp, who was forging down the left.
Alexa Rangecroft also got stuck in early and she was also looking to
thread the ball through to Tori. Tianna Carrington was strong at
the back and made a great clearance straight to Nina, who flicked it on
to Tori whose shot went wide. All the pressure was coming from
Spurs and the opposition were being pushed well back into their own
half. Vicki Blake was doing an excellent job of intercepting the
ball early and clearing the Tottenham lines from any danger.
Nina
was put free from a Vicki pass and was in range, but passed the ball
through to Lydia Maher, who was just beaten to the ball by the keeper.
A moment later Nina had her own chance with the ball being saved by the
keeper. Vicki once again brought the ball out of defence and
drilled a pass to Tori whose shot went wide of the mark.
Charlotte McLucas and Becca Dowling were battling away down the right
looking for space up front with Lydia. It was Vicki again who
threaded the ball through to Tori, who this time buried the ball into
the back of the net to make it 1-0 after 13 minutes.
It was
very nearly another goal a minute later when Tori put Nina through but
she collided with the keeper and the ball went just wide of the outside
post. Tori was pushing into the box and Bobbi was looking for more
space out wide. Tori had another shot well saved by the keeper and
Vicki continued to dominate the middle of the defence. She was also
doing a great job in defence with Tianna acting as sweeper and Becca and
Saskia Collins patrolling the flanks.
Towards the end of the first half, Blerta Berisha came on down the left
and soon showed her skill and speed down the left hand side. Nina
scored a very good individual goal by beating two players and then
sliding the ball neatly past the keeper to hit the back of the net on
the stroke of 30 minutes.
The
second half started with Laura Newby finding some good space down the
right and using her pace to worry the Buckden defenders. Spurs
continued by applying immense pressure on the opposition. Nina
linked up with Laura whose shot was well saved by the keeper and a
moment later, it was the other way round and the keeper held onto to
Nina’s shot.
Blerta
was causing all sort of problems down the left, at one point beating
four players with her skill and guile, but her shot flew over the cross
bar. Becca was called into clearing the ball away and still Spurs
pushed forward looking for the next goal.
Hollie
Watson came on and was straight into the action delivering a testing
ball for the Buckden defence to deal with. Blerta had a shot which
was saved by the keeper and Jade Finch also was darting around looking
to see if she could pick up the pieces. The Tottenham pressure
finally paid off Laura chased after a long ball from Vicki, she crossed
it into the centre and Bobbi Cubberley flicked it on to Blerta who
placed it into the corner to make it 3-0.
There
was another goal mouth scramble a few moments later and the ball
couldn’t quite find the finally delivery and was eventually cleared.
Shoshana Field came on to replace Saskia, who had another solid game on
the left of defence.
Hollie
delivered a sure footed long pass to Laura, whose resultant shot was
blocked and finally Tori had a crack which saw the keeper tip the ball
over the cross bar.
It was
another cracking display by the girls, with Lily having only touched the
ball a couple of times. Well done to Vicki who was named player of
the match for her vision and touch in the middle of defence. It looks
like the squad of players are growing and growing every game, although
in this league there is no room for complacency.

For the
last four years we have played Luton and every time the girls meet it
rains. Well guess what ? Yes, that’s right it threw it down
!
Spurs produced the early pressure up front in the
guise of Tori Tripp and Laura Newby. Vicki Blake was strong at the
back clearing the ball away with Saskia Collins also being called into
action on the left hand side. Lydia Maher was looking for space on
the right with Alexa Rangecroft looking for the through ball. Charlotte
McLucas was dropping back to defend and when Tori lofted a ball over the
top of the defence for Laura to run onto, she was just beaten to it by
the Luton keeper.
Tianna
Carrington delivered a long pass from the deep to Lydia who passed the
ball onto to Laura who drilled the ball into the back of the net to make
it 1-0 after 10 mins. Bobbi Cubberley produced a long searching
ball to Tori whose shot just went wide of the mark. A few moments
later Charlotte crossed the ball on the right and Tori just couldn’t
quite get on the end of it. Tori then produced an excellent corner
which flashed through the box and just missed the post.
The
next move saw Bobbi flicking the ball onto Alexa whose shot went over
the bar. Still Luton tried to push forward but once again Vicki
was holding firm at the back and cleared the ball away. Becca
Dowling was getting stuck in down the right hand side, tracking any runs
made by the attackers.
Tori
had switched to the right and Blerta Berisha came on to change the play
on the left hand side. Alexa had another shot which went wide of
the mark, but the girls were piling on the pressure. Lydia produced
some very skill on the right and produced a through ball for Bobbi to
run onto, which was blocked out by the defence.
Tottenham won a free kick and Bobbi produced a lovely floated ball to
Lydia, which she brought down well and her shot just whistled passed the
post. All the possession finally paid off when Alexa crossed a
lovely ball to Tori who buried the ball in the back of the net on the
run to make it 2-0 after 33 mins. Nina Pontes very nearly scored before
half time when she beat about four players and her shot smashed against
the crossbar and out again.
The
girls started the second half brightly with Blerta running onto a ball
drilled out of defence by Hollie Watson. Blerta made a great run
on the left, beating a couple of players, finally running out of space.
Luton still were pushing forward and the defence plus Lily Tyrimos had
to be on their toes. Indeed, Lily just managed to save a bouncing
ball which very nearly fully went into the goal, but she managed to
snatch it away in time.
Becca
was showing her speed out of defence, passing to Laura who couldn’t
quite get her shot away on this occasion. The girls were linking up well
with Alexa passing to Lydia who flicked it onto Tori whose shot just
went over the top of the bar as she tried to chip the keeper who she had
seen had come off her line.
A
moment later Tori had sped down the left and crossed a great ball to
Nina, who calmly buried it in the back of the net to make it 3-0 with 45
mins gone. Becca and Hollie were making sure that Luton couldn’t
attack on the wings, with Vicki and Tianna holding the centre of defence
well.
Nina
passed the ball onto Bobbi who also tried to lob the keeper, but the
ball just whistled over the top. Still Luton didn’t give up to
their credit and Tianna did an excellent sweeping job in defence, also
coming out with the ball to beat a number of players with her speed and
grace.
Blerta
had a great chance which she had carved out for herself on the left, but
just took one touch to much to allow the keeper to dive on the ball.
Goal number four started with Tianna at the back who delivered a long
ball onto Nina, who pick it up, ran on to beat a couple of players and
thump the ball past the keeper who didn’t stand a chance. It was
very nearly five nil, when Blerta once again, broke down the left hand
side and Jade Finch who had just come on, tapped the ball into the goal,
but alas was adjudged to be offside, so no goal on this occasion.
Shoshana Field had replaced Lily in goal and very bravely dived at the
feet of an attacker to beat her to the ball and save a certain goal.
Back the ball went to the other end, where Blerta had a shot saved by
the Luton keeper. Nina once again used her strength and speed to
burst through the middle and score her hat trick of the day in fine
style and make it 5-0.
Probably the best goal of the day came when Charlotte floated a lovely
ball in on the left and Jade leapt into the air and smashed the ball
into the corner of the goal. It was probably the finest headed
goal I have ever seen over the last four years that I have been
following the team. So 6-0 and still some eight minutes left.
Still
Luton tried to push forward and once again Shoshana was called into
action to dive on the ball, before a shot could be released. Tori
produced a great cross herself which found Jade, whose shot, smashed off
the post. Bobbi had worked hard all the game and her reward came
when she saw the keeper out of her goal; she slotted it passed the
keeper to make it 7-0.
Jade
made a good run down the right and still the defence of Hollie, Saskia,
Vicki and Tianna held firm with Shoshana, hanging on well to a strongly
struck free kick.
The
girls had once again produced an impressive display, whilst they had
started a little slowly in the first half they had gone up a gear in the
second half, had worked well as a squad and proved that they can score
from any angle and style of attack. The defence had held firm once
again and Tori was named as player of the match for her speed,
enthusiasm, grit and determination, as well as flair.
Well
done to Luton who battled right to the end.
Note
to self, buy an umbrella for the return match !!

This was
always going to be a tough match and a good test for both sides, who sat
third and second in the League before the match.
Lea
Valley started brightly and when there was a very rare error in defence
which let the striker through, Lily Tyrimos bravely came out and blocked
the shot, but it bounced back to the striker and she buried in the goal
to put Lea Valley 1-0 ahead after just two minutes play.
What
would Spurs do now; no-one has scored against them for four games on the
bounce. Vicki Blake was solid in defence and drilled a ball
through to Laura Newby, who was just beaten to it by the Lea Valley
keeper. Spurs were under a lot of pressure and Vicki and Tianna
Carrington were having to work very hard in the middle of defence to not
let the opposition break through. Unfortunately, Nina Pontes who
has been the star striker for the last few games damaged her calf muscle
and was replaced by Lydia Maher.
Lily
rushed out of her goal once again and managed to smother the ball before
a striker could get to it. Gradually the girls started to get back
into the game and Bobbi Cubberley delivered a good ball onto Lydia on
the left, whose shot just went wide of the target.
Still
Lea Valley pushed forward and Tori Tripp also came back to assist the
defence in clearing any trouble. Sasika Collins was replaced by
Hollie Watson on the left of defence. Tottenham were now showing
some pace and skill with Lydia having another shot, which was well saved
and a corner was won. Charlotte McLucas floated a great ball in
and Tori popped up at the near post to tap the ball into the goal and
level the scores after 15 minutes.
Alexa
Rangecroft and Bobbi were starting to make their presence felt in the
midfield by closing down players early and putting them under pressure.
Hollie had a shot from a ball that had come off a corner and it went
high, but unfortunately didn’t drop enough and went over the bar.
Becca
Dowling was prowling on the right hand side, looking for the right
opportunity to push forward and track back when needed in defence.
Still Lea Valley were dangerous and Charlotte and Hollie were teaming up
to make sure no one got past them. Tottenham were now piling on the
pressure and were awarded a penalty when Lydia was shoved over in the
box. The girls all looked at each other to decide who was going to take
the penalty and finally Alexa stepped up. She coolly delivered the
ball into the right hand corner of the goal to make it 2-1 with 20
minutes gone.
Hollie
drilled the ball down the left, Charlotte picked it up and moved into
the middle, crossed the ball to Lydia on the right, whose shot just
missed the post by a whisker. Tori was battling down the right, as
Blerta Berisha had come onto the left hand side. She was in the
mix straight away when Tori crossed to her and Blerta’s resultant shot
was saved by the keeper, but the ball spun out to Lydia, whose shot was
cleared off the line by a Lea Valley defender. Still Spurs pushed
forward, but they had to be careful at the back with Hollie, Vicki,
Becca and Tianna making sure that no one broke through.
There
was a very good move from the back when Hollie passed it out of defence
to Laura, who drilled the ball to Lydia who flicked it on to Tori, whose
shot just went wide. Becca laid a great ball to Laura, whose spun
and shot and once again the ball just went passed the post by half an
inch. The half time whistle blew.
Spurs
were onto Lea Valley again straight from the kick off and Lydia very
nearly battled through the middle to get a shot away, but was thwarted
at the last moment. A moment Vicki later weaved a great ball
through to Lydia whose shot went straight at the keeper.
Lily
held a long range shot and Tori had a great run on the right with which
she crossed the ball, but Laura couldn’t quite get on the end of it.
Alexa was now in control of the midfield and Blerta was making a real
nuisance of her self down the left, showing her skill and speed, with
both feet.
Saskia
and Vicki linked up well at the back to stop a Lea Valley attacker
progressing towards the goal. Lily showed her quick reactions when
she came out to slide kick the ball away from an attacker’s feet.
Hollie once again delivered a long pass to Blerta, who beat a couple of
players and then found Lydia, who was one on one with the keeper, this
time the keeper saved the shot. Tori was charging constantly down
the right and had a 40 yard sprint with her shot just going over the
bar. All the pressure finally paid off when Laura passed a good
ball to find Lydia up front, she beat a player and then banged the ball
into the back of the net to make it 3-1 after 55 mins. She was
back a minute after the restart, when she was one on one with the
keeper, she coolly danced round the keeper and this time buried the ball
to make it 4-1.
Still
Lea Valley tried to push forward but ran straight into the solid defence
of Hollie, Vicki, Saskia and Tianna, who were determined not to let
anything go. Still the midfield battled on with Bobbi and Alexa
delivered a good ball through to Jade Finch, who was getting stuck
in. Saskia made a timely tackle at the back and Jade was battling down
the left, with Saskia delivering a good ball through to Lydia, whose
shot was well saved to deny her the hat-trick.
Becca
was working well with Tianna and Shoshana Field who had come on for
Vicki. Still the girls pushed forward with Tori and Lydia having linked
up well through out the game. The final whistle blew and a very
entertaining match had ended. Both sides showed some high quality
football, which was a joy to watch and Lydia won her first player of the
match award.
Once
again the squad delivered an excellent footballing display and the team
seems to be getting stronger and stronger as all the players fight for
their places.
Well
done girls. I am now off to watch some one called Guy get a little
bit warm and see thousands of pounds get blown up in a few minutes !!

It was a
much earlier start for the girls and it showed, as Stevenage were on the
attack straight away and the central defence, who normally are inch
perfect, were having a very slow start, failing to clear the danger and
the first shot at goal came from a Stevenage player, who were very much
up for the game today. Still Stevenage pushed forward and the
Spurs midfield and central defence were struggling to get into the swing
of things. Shoshana Field rushed out of her goal to clear the ball
away from danger.
Slowly
Spurs started to string some passes together and Lydia Maher was
through, following some good individual skill and was just denied by the
Stevenage keeper who threw herself in front of Lydia’s shot.
Blerta Berisha broke out of the midfield on the left and had a good run
at the Stevenage defence to make them think.
Hollie
Watson had come up from left of defence for a corner, the ball spun out
to her and she had a shot from outside the area, which went wide of the
mark. Hollie was then involved in a move when she headed the ball
onto to Tori Tripp, who ran at pace down the left and her shot was well
saved by the Stevenage keeper.
Blerta
was showing her skill down the left by weaving past three Stevenage
players, but couldn’t get the final shot away. Alexa Rangecroft produced
a lovely through ball to Lydia whose shot just went wide of the post.
Tori was storming down the wing and her shot was well held by the
opposition keeper. Tianna Carrington and Vicki Blake were now starting
to get it together and clearing the ball away from danger at the back.
Tori was a demon down the right and whipped in a cross, which Blerta
just couldn’t get on the end of.
The
first break through came after 17 minutes when Charlotte McLucas who had
come on for Bobbi Cubberley chipped a great shot through to Nina Pontes,
who then chipped the keeper beautifully to make it 1-0. The girls
now started to get more into their stride although still not firing on
all cylinders, with Tori once again delivering a searching cross which
Nina couldn’t quite get past the keeper. Becca Dowling was solid
on the right of defence, clearing the ball away from the opposition who
were still trying everything to get past Spurs.
Goal
number two came when Laura Newby battled through a crowd of players and
drilled the ball to Nina who slotted it way to make it 2-0 after 23
minutes. Bobbi had come back on and she delivered an inch perfect
through pass to Nina, who once again found the back of the net to score
her hat-trick after 24 minutes to make it 3-0.
Still
Stevenage didn’t give up and Hollie produced some strong solid tackling
to stop them advancing down the left. Alexa had dropped into
defence and was doing some good work in the sweeping position, with Tori
showing excellent vision and skill on the left and Tianna, starting to
show some of her pace on the right, just before half time.
At the
break, the Spurs keepers had changed and Lily Tyrimos was called into
action straight away when she produced a very solid save. Nina was
looking for goal number four when she let loose with a shot which was
expertly parried away by the opposition keeper.
From
the resultant corner there was a goal mouth scramble, but no one could
get the ball into the net. It was now Nina’s time to return the
favour to Tori and she produced a good through ball, which Tori let fly
and it was well saved. Vicki was getting into her stride at the back
and cleared the ball away on a number of occasions as Stevenage tried to
break through.
Alexa
had changed position once again and ran down the right producing a great
cross, which just missed Laura’s out stretched foot, but Tori popped up
at the far post and tapped the ball in to make it 4-0.
Lydia
and Alexa were battling in the midfield and Jade Finch had a good run
through the middle of some traffic. Goal number five was an
excellent individual effort by Lydia, who had burst through the middle
at speed to drill the ball passed the keeper’s out-stretched hand after
45 mins.
Still
Stevenage didn’t give up and very nearly slotted the ball away from a
cross, but couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Becca was passing
well out of defence and Tori produced a great cross to Blerta who very
coolly took the ball down and slotted it way to make it 6-0.
To
their credit Stevenage still didn’t give up and had a fantastic chance
which Lily just managed to smoother at the last minute. Blerta was once
again causing mayhem in the Stevenage defence and had a couple of shots
saved. The final goal of the day was a superb shot from Tori, from the
edge of the area, which rocketed into the goal, giving the keeper no
chance to make it 7-0.
Still
Spurs had to be on their toes with Hollie stepping up to head of some
danger. Saskia Collins was defending very well on the left time after
time. Jade broke through, but was unfortunately muscled off the
ball before she could get her shot away. Laura had a shot which
whistled across the face of the goal.
Tianna
was then like a person on a true life mission when she broke out of
defence and beat four players in a row, finally just being beaten to the
ball before she could let fly with her shot. Laura very nearly
scored when after a goal mouth scramble her shot just went wide of the
mark. Once again Saskia was battling at the back and Tianna went
for another run up the field, this time on the left, but her shot was
saved.
After
the game against Lea Valley the girls were a little off colour and
despite the score line, Stevenage gave it their all and were very
unlucky not to have scored a couple of goals. It should be a
lesson for Spurs that you can never take any game for granted.
Player of the match went to Tori, who showed skill, vision and pace down
the wings.
