Your
reporter was nearly late for this match being detained elsewhere but the
weather was fine and the pitch at Denham in perfect condition. The two
teams had met less that two months ago, when Spurs won a closely
contested game, but this time the result was to be reversed. The
fixture was at the start of the Easter school holidays, with consequent
absences. Helena Scotland was captain and substitutes at the kick off
were Jade O'Brien and Shakira Waithe. Clive and Costas were assisting
with the coaching.
At the start of the first half, play was equally balanced, with the
Tottenham defence holding firm against the foraging home team. The back
players, Naomi Coulson, Ellie May Goodey, Dot Penders were making last
ditch clearances with Dot in particular playing with few faults, though
under some pressure. Ellie May was making some powerful passes forward
to start attacks. Goalie Tahlia Wensley made a series of competent
saves as the play went from one end to the other. Naomi cleared
off the line and made some effective tackles in the box before going
off.
In midfield, the usual partnership of Samantha Delves and Helena
Scotland exchanged passes and made expeditions down the right, while
Georgia Miller attacked on the opposite wing. Sam took the corners and
sent in some dangerous crosses. Up front, Rayian Brown and Shanai
Jackson were unable to capitalise on excellent passes forward by Melody
Jones, who was later injured.
As the game progressed, the home team began to get more possession and
were able eventually to take a two goal lead. The lead was nearly
three, but a free kick on the edge of the penalty box was kicked over
the bar.
The Spurs
girls did mount some counter attacks as the substitutions were
effected, both Helena and Sam went close and Georgia was also making
some tricky runs past defenders. The passing sequences were attempted,
but this week seemed to break down from silly mistakes, on the first
touch especially.
Even so, the
defence was under pressure. Ellie May was showing some skills with
heading out and Dot was again the last ditch defender. The ref called
out one minute and at the break the score was 2-0. Denham were on
top but the result could still go either way.
In the
second session, Spurs tried hard to get back in the game, but soon the
familiar pattern emerged with Tottenham pinned back to the own half.
Dot was still playing the role of the obstacle that United had to get
past. The Spurs keeper was called upon several times to rush out and
collect the ball and Rhiannon was again injured.
A few Spurs moves emerged especially in a late rally. Sam, Georgia and
Helena combined well before the Denham managed to clear the ball, with a
fierce shot by Sam being palmed over. Shakira was playing strongly
in the middle - tackling, running and passing.
Despite all the good efforts by Dot, Ellie May and Mel, a third goal
made the result secure for the home team. The ref finally called
three minutes to go and soon Spurs ended a miserable afternoon with no
points. Despite trying hard to recover their passing game, they had a
minority of possession and look forward to better form after the Easter
break.
Dot was
announced as Player of the match for a near faultless performance.
Naomi commented, "We tried to play football and deserved a goal at
least. Denham did play strongly." Dave Rose, Coach, repeated the
message, "We tried to play the ball, but it was a game where chances
were there although we need to be a bit sharper."

This visit from the League
leaders was always going as big a challenge as earlier, with a series of
closely fought but defeated results already this season. On a warm
Spring day, the Spurs enjoyed a relatively full turn out for the squad,
with Rhiannon Bassett, Jade O'Brien, and Shanai Jackson beginning the
match as substitutes.
This was to be a game of two definite halves with the visitors scoring
four goals and dominating the first half but the Spurs making a strong
come back in the second session and only conceding a goal by mistake.
But in the first half QPR piled on relentless pressure and notched up
three goals early on. The Spurs team was trying a new formation of
4-2-3-1, but there was much interchange of positions. The
defensive squad comprising Ellie May Goodey, Naomi Coulson, Yasmin
Roudsari and Kathleen Jackson performed miracles of last minute saves
and goal line clearances. Generally, but not always, they won the day.
Soon the home team were pressed into their own half and even when
forward passes were made there was no one there to collect them. Alison
Woodward and Georgia Fairs did make some attempt to create attacks but
they could not stop the pressure of the attack and the goals. Tottenham
counter attacked with Georgia Miller shooting just over the bar. Helena
Scotland was breaking down her wing and managed to get some crosses
over. Melody Jones sent some high balls over the defenders.
Substitutes were brought on at this point and throughout the match,
without affecting the performance very much it seemed.
It was 30 minutes before the home team got one goal back. Jade O'Brien
sent in a powerful shot that the keeper could only parry. Georgia M
followed up the rebound and netted the ball. Unfortunately a poor goal
clearance led to QPR extending their total to three goals again, but
Naomi and Kathleen especially kept up with the defensive clearances.
Before half time there was some attempt to re establish the passing
movements with Ally, both Georgias and Xelia Mendes-Jones putting in
some credible efforts.
At half time the score was 1-4 which was a slight exaggeration, though
QPR were the better side and had won a lot of corners in the process.
In the second session with Shanai Jackson and Rhiannon Bassett now on,
Spurs staged a slow come back. They were now holding their own and the
play was virtually even.
Even so Naomi was needed at the back and as ever Kathleen was
marshalling the defence. Meanwhile at the other end Georgia, Ally,
Xelia and Helena were putting together passing movements. Mel and
Rhiannon were injured and some free kicks were won. Spurs were
beginning to win more tackles and their marking system was more
effective on the foraging forwards.
As the match went from end to end, Spurs keeper Tahlia Wensley pulled
off some good saves, but it was a defensive error that let the League
leaders achieve a total of five. The match was not yet over - Jade was
chasing every ball and narrowly missed adding to the Spurs tally.
Helena was sending in some free kicks and centres and Georgia M was
assuming a dominant position in the middle
Yasmin also deserves a mention as she improves with every game and
Shanai was trying hard. Georgia F and Rhiannon had given of their best
all the game. As the match ended, everyone was using the last of their
energy in the hot sun and Tottenham can console themselves that once
again the score of 1-5 did not reflect the balance of play.
Afterwards Kathleen and Georgia M were nominated by the parents as
Players of the Match and manager Glenn Weaver selected Naomi. All three
player got their award. Yasmin commented," We put everything into the
second half, but could have played better before the break."
Glenn said that the team had kept on trying despite the circumstances
and he was pleased especially with the second half.
To sum up - as the season
draws to a close, Spurs can reflect on a steady improvement and with
better finishing can expect healthier results next year.

Having won already twice
this season, Spurs went to this evening visit to Enfield at the
Brimsdown ground with the expectation of a good result. The timing
meant that Spurs had just enough players to start the game but
re-enforcements soon arrived, in the form of Kathleen Jackson and Jade
O'Brien. Rhiannon Bassett meanwhile began as substitute.
The match began as it was to continue, pretty even. The Spurs keeper
Tahlia Wensley got an early touch, but at the other end, both Georgia
Miller and Alison Woodward had shots on goal and Samantha Delves was
breaking down the wing with ease. Soon the substitutes were made and
the defence was even more solid. Any four from the defenders -
Ellie May Goodey, Naomi Coulson, Rhiannon, Yasmin Roudsari, Dot Penders
and Kathleen were quite consistent in cutting out the home attackers
with head and foot, and anything in between.
Indeed it was against the run of play that Enfield managed to score a
lucky goal to go ahead. Spurs kept up the pressure. Sam put in two
shots, one from the wing and the other blocked by the defences. A pass
forward from Melody Jones was just slightly overshot, before the player
came off injured after 30 minutes. With Enfield now making counter
attacks, Naomi and Dot were decisive at the back.
It was still 1-0 at half time and the game resumed very much where it
had left off. Sam was still punishing the defence and Dot still
assisting Kathleen at the centre of the defence. Ally, now back on, was
threading through some clever passes and Shakira Waithe was regularly
dispossessing the Enfield attack - starting one of her own with a big
kick upfield. The same was true of Ellie May whose strong clearances
went right into the Enfield half.
Rayian was all the while pushing forward and it was only a matter of
time before the equaliser. This came after 50 minutes from another
centre by Sam, which Jade was able to net. This goal seemed to
re-vitalise the home team and they pressed forward, winning a series of
corners. The game was now hotly contested and both teams tried for the
winner. Shanai Jackson came back on and harassed the defenders. Yasmin
was coming upfield and challenging for every ball with a much improved performance.
The ball went from one end to the other. Georgia on the left had found
a way to juggle past the home defenders and Sam did the same on the
other side with her speed. In the end, it was a strongly contested
penalty award that was decisive. Tahlia who has done everything asked
of her, including coming out quickly to collect the ball, made a
valiant attempt but could not save the kick.
Spurs came back. A dangerous free kick was ruled offside, other moves
were put together, but the game ended with a 2-1 score line. By a
unanimous vole, the parents chose Dot as Player of the Match for a
deserved all round performance. Commenting on the result Sam said that
she thought the Spurs did not deserve to lose, but to win. Dave Rose,
Coach, said the match hinged on two decisions and he thought the whole
team had played well.

Spurs Ladies Under-13s
started this match hoping for a change in fortunes after recent
reversals, but despite having about half of the possession and a number
of chances to score, they only managed a consolidation goal at the very
end. Meanwhile the visitors, especially one player, took their
opportunities and netted a bagful. Subs at the start were Rhiannon
Bassett, Melody Jones, Shanai Jackson and Jade O'Brien. The opposition
had no subs, the pitch and the weather were perfect.
Tottenham began the game in a dominant way. Down the right side,
Georgia Miller was able to organise a series of breaches of the defence
almost at will. Her centres from these presented a serious danger, but
none were consolidated - which can be said to be the story of the match
for the home team. Xelia Mendes-Jones combined well with, Samantha
Delves in this period of attacking, keeping up the pressure.
In the defence, Ellie May Goodey, Naomi Coulson, Yasmin Roudsari and Dot
Penders held the occasional counter attack, with Dot especially
marshalling the operations. Then, out of the blue in virtually their
first serious move, Harvesters scored the first goal to go 0-1 up.
Spurs kept up their efforts; substitutions were made and Helena Scotland
in particular made a number of penetrating runs and near misses on goal.
Then the story repeated itself. Against the run of play, the same
Harvesters player scored again and again to make it 0-3. Spurs were not
daunted by the bad luck and pelted the visitors' goal. Sam made two
outstanding runs and shots on goal, one from well outside the penalty
box. Helena did the same, but the results were also negative.
For the defence Ellie was playing up field. Shakira Waithe and Rhiannon
tackled well, but Shanai Jackson, Rayian Brown, Mel and Jade were
unable to finish off the passing moves from the back.
It was 0-3 at half time but the pattern of the first period was to be
repeated. First a well flighted corner, then a breakaway from midfield
round the keeper, next a goalmouth scramble and finally a defensive
error took the score, astonishingly, to seven. Again Spurs were winning
a share of the play, not quite so dominantly, but their performance was
much more respectable than the goal counts suggests.
Jade chased several forward passes and twice Ray made strong challenges
and near misses. Sam tried some long shots and Georgia, still
plugging away down the wing, came into the centre to hit the bar.
For the defence, Tahlia Wensley was still making saves, Dot was filling
the gaps very effectively and Naomi heading and kicking her way out of
trouble. Ellie continued to play a midfield role as well as defending
one. The Spurs inability to finish their play despite good groundwork
and passing moves was the key to the game and no one player was more
blameworthy than the rest.
Shakira Waithe, Yasmin Roudsari, Mel Jones and Helena Scotland were
notable for the passing sequences and Sam's energy kept up to the end.
Shanai was doing her best, but it was Helena who finally hit the back of
the net after several commendable efforts, right at the final whistle.
Harvesters were ahead on the corner counter but overall possession was
more or less equal. The superior skills regarding goal taking were what
divided the two teams.
For Tottenham, the parents
voted Dot and Naomi as joint Players of the Match and several others got
nominations. Georgia commented, "We played well, but they took their
chances." New manager Russell Fairs echoed the universal feeling that,
"the score line did not reflect the reality of the play."
This was the last match of a season that has been a roller coaster one
for the Spurs Under 13s. Players will no doubt look towards the
summer's Open Sessions for better times ahead.
