long lane u14 0
london youth fa cup - semi-final

Rachel Hands produced a stunning display of precision shooting to propel Spurs Ladies Under-13s into the London Youth FA Cup Final.

After much deliberation and key prodding into the semi-frozen ground, the semi-final got under way half an hour late and Kent league leaders Long Lane from South London were solid and committed competitors.

Spurs started with some neat passing in small areas of the pitch, Christie Page, Emma Lee and Izzie Reuben-Crompton combining down the left flank but as soon as play was switched through the midfield chances were created. Rachel receiving the ball just on the edge of the area, just to the right, fired in a low drive through a massed defence, beating the agile, but unsighted Long Lane keeper.  Rachel’s second came in similar circumstances this time with more power and height.

The last 15 minutes of the first period were Long Lane’s best, twice breaking away, but with Kitty Chapman’s confidence high, she made some vital saves; first diving for Evie Rose’s sliced clearance and then, shortly after, getting quickly down to a shot and palming away with a strong hand across the face of the goal.  The Tottenham followers held their breath as two forwards converged on the ball, but a cool covering Emma Tammaro cleared off the line to safety.  Kitty’s sweeping up at the back has certainly added a new dimension to spurs defence.

The second half was full of the Lilywhites attacks with Georgia Fairs moved up to midfield to add a bit of bite and Rachel moved forward a number of chances were created.  Tara Sandford and Tia Fogarty both had efforts on goal, but were thwarted by the keeper and Maya Vio was halted by the assistant's flag.  Maddie Sollof’s forays in the inside right channel, where Izzie and Georgia slid passes, forced the defenders to turn and retreat and got the third goal that killed the contest.  Producing a cunning peace of skill to create an opening Maddie placed the ball into the opposite left hand corner.  Rachel’s final goal - another emphatic drive from the edge of the area - capped off a fine all round display and produced her first hat-trick.

The defence of Evie, Georgia, Jenny Hunnable, Christie, Emma T, Natasha Smits and Poppy Bennett played exceptionally well in restricting the black and blue striped forwards.

Chas and Dave will have to alter the lyrics to “Spurs are on their way to Mile End!”  This time with the players determined to put last years disappointment to bed and hopefully raise the cup.

home counties girl's football league  - u13 div. 1

The first game of 2010 was a friendly, much needed after a five weeks break. Thank-you to Croxley for providing stiff opposition. Getting back into a rhythm was surprisingly not a problem with good passing and moving. Tia holding the ball up front as practiced in training, Maya buzzing around and creating chances.

Croxley scored three good long range goals with maybe a lack of pressure put on the player shooting, a fault that was ruthlessly exposed. Players played in various positions and all equipped themselves well overall a very valuable training exercise.

WELL DONE GIRLS.

Thank-you to Rachel's dad and Billy for running the line.

home counties girl's football league  - u13 cup group b
On a cold and horrid day, the gods transpired to derail Tottenham's quest for League Cup glory.  Injury, illness and a jack-knifed lorry on the M25 meant Spurs played most of the first half with 10 players.  St Martins started with determination and were two goals to the good early on with Spurs underprepared and timid in the close contests.  The score a fair reflection of play.

The second half was a battle with both teams tested physically in a hurriedly disjointed first 20 minutes. Then Maya Vio finished well to make it 2-1 and the whites pressed forward conceding an own goal four minutes to go after a St Martins Breakaway.

In the circumstances the never say die attitude some of the players showed was positive and after Omonia beat St Martins in this mini league, all is not lost with home games against Enfield and Omonia to come.

A special mention for Emma T who had a commanding game in goal even though her lips turned blue in the cold.
Thank-you for Maddie and Natasha's dads for running the line.

A good victory for Spurs today against Brentford who valiantly fought hard with the bare 11.

A zero zero score line did not reflect Spurs possession and passing in the first half, with neat inter changes creating chances for an enthusiastic Rachel Hands, who went close twice with drives just skimming the post.  With the defence encouraged to exploit the wings and move forward, opportunities continued for the Lilywhites with Natasha Smits surging forward into space after a couple of wall passes and having a crack at goal, although they were alert to the Bees counter attacks.

The second period started with Spurs on the attack, Tia Fogarty firing over and Maya Vio weaving her way down the right side.  After Maya was brought down on 40 minutes, Georgia Fair's precise free kick ended up in the bottom left hand corner.  Within minutes and with Georgia's confidence high, she finished off a flowing move with a firm strike that the keeper had no chance of saving.  With the rain lashing down Tottenham, surged forward. Tia again breaking through, Emma Lee hitting the post and Tara Sanford denied by brave defending.

Tia made it 3-0 finishing inside the six yard box. The defence stuck to their tasks and reduced Brentford to a few chances that Kitty saved with assertive dives. With awful conditions continuing a surprisingly nimble referee called for full time.

Thankyou to Natasha's brother for running the line.

DIARY 2009

Dave Rose - 43 3/4.

Dear Diary,

8.30am - Got up early read the Sunday papers about England's performance against Brazil, struggling in the 90 degrees heat, what a hard life these pro footballers have. Darren Bent definitely wouldn't get in our team.

10.15 am - Picked up Luke on our way to a big game, Luton away. Cant believe how good the weather is today. After Saturday's torrid conditions, hardly Bahrain.

11.00 am - Arrived at Lancaster Road, watched the U15's, Dave Watson was not in a good mood after a tackle on Holly. They lost 2-0, didn't deserve that score-line.

11.20 am - Luke and Mark started the warm up, it looked good. I warmed up the keeper, thought who I might use as an inspiration for Kitty. Calamity James, Nah. Foster, Not after the league cup final. Use Peter Shilton, she didn't know who he was! I keep forgetting they were born in the mid 90's. NOTE: Don't mention Stanley Mathews in future.

11.45 am - Talk to Steve, the Luton manager, nice guy.

12.00 pm - A pack of dogs very large and very small arrived, had visions of a Great Dane digging a hole and burying one of our forwards to consume later. After urinating on the pitch, they wandered off. Hmm what would Fabio do?

12.15 pm - Kick off. First 20 minutes, brilliant, some good passing. By Jove Mark, I think it's all coming together. Although they are tiring.

12.40 pm - Doh !!! Luton score with their first shot on goal.  Throw my pen on the floor in a petulant manner.  What a touchline wally I am.

12.45 pm - Half Time. Gained composure, give instructions, and said, "Keep playing the same way and victory will be yours."

12.55 pm - Second Half. What's going on they've stopped passing the ball? Luton hoofed we followed. Their number 6 cleaned up everything. Tried to push our forwards onto her, but I must be talking Latin because all instructions are ignored.

1.07 pm - This second half has been so scrappy, and a long ball over the top has done us. Kitty did as asked, and swept up but the ball fell to Luton's forward who finished well. We now have to chase the game. What would Sven do? I cant say on a family website.

1.30 pm  - Game over, hand shakes, 3 cheers, all sporting. Had a chat with the girls, they were gutted (a positive sign, the green shoots of desire maybe). Suggested we can improve "our fitness" (I like to include myself as I still think I can play like a 21 year old on a Wednesday night, NOT). Some disagreed and said it wasn't their fault they weren't fit? Still trying to figure out who's fault it is.  Zac Efron maybe?

A good performance by the ref, who like policemen are looking younger or is it just me? Thanks to Emma T's dad for running the line again.
Harry would go out and spend 10 million but I've blown my budget on eight water bottles and a match ball (which was nicked on week three).

2.00 pm - Saw chairman Glen Weaver in the car park and mused over the game. "Please don't give me the vote of confidence, PLEASE DON'T GIVE ME THE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE". Phew, what a relief he just thought we weren't big or physical enough.

4.00 pm till very late - My dad came round for a lovely roast dinner, three bottles of Rioja and later we put the world to rights.  It's only a game of football.  HAPPY DAYS.

Players of the match: Jenny and Evie.

peterborough united u14 3

friendly

A marvellous opportunity for Spurs Ladies Under-13s was dampened today in the pouring rain, a great deal of work by Chairman Glenn Weaver and Kelly Pickstone from Peterborough to get a competitive game on, was affected, as Spurs were "down to the bare bones" as 'Arry would say. Yet in adversity the "magnificent 9" performed.

"When the blast of war blows in our ears,
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard favoured rage."

The words of the bard, the actions of a determined group of girls.  A big thank you to Gerry McLucas for supplying back up, with Charlotte McLucas and Shoshana Field making up the full quota for the first period.

Shoshana battled up front against a stiff breeze and Charlotte penetrated down the right with forceful, rapid bursts of pace.  Without their contributions Spurs may not have got to half time only a single goal behind.  Peterborough were a very good under 14 team, with technically skilful players operating in a solid formation, they looked to play football in the right way with a lot of credit going to the coach assembling such a strong squad.

The home side dominated the first half with Spurs trying to play the ball out of defence with no joy and subsequently dropping deeper into their own half conceding a plethora of corners which eventually led to the opening goal.  As the ball came to the edge of the area it dropped to a Peterborough midfielder who placed it in the bottom left hand corner 1-0.  Kitty in goal, came off her line mopping up through balls throughout the half.  Being more dominant in the air and on the ground, frustrating the Posh's constant attacks.

At half time Charlotte and Shoshana were replaced by Sophie Gardner, so 10 player Spurs with the wind behind them and 1-0 down were left with one option; to do and to dare.  Holding a higher line and competing in midfield they succeeded in playing more of the match in the opposition half, yet when under attack Poppy, Jenny, Georgia and a hobbling Evie fought for every ball, never abdicating responsibilities and always covering their mates.  Emma Lee, Maddie and Emma T got more into the game playing in a midfield four, working tirelessly and admirably for the team while feeding Sophie with sharp defence splitting passes.  Her pace was Tottenham's secret weapon, beating the defence in races and scoring with composure three times for a sizzling hat trick that took every spectator's mind off the adverse weather.  The fourth goal came from a corner, swung in and put over the line for an unlucky own goal.

Peterborough were not finished and came back scoring from another corner after a goal mouth scramble and with a minute and a half to go they got a third after a slight hesitation from Kitty.  Tottenham saw out the remaining minutes for a thoroughly satisfying victory in an even contest.

Now a few words about our guest player from Toronto Canada, Rio Speller-Drews, a lovely girl who mixed with the team comfortably and was superb in central midfield, covering all the pitch and coming close in the first half with a fine run and shot.  She wore the Spurs shirt with pride and distinction.  Chris, her dad, can be very proud of her and we at Tottenham Ladies would welcome them back any time.

Again, I must thank Kelly and all at Peterborough for their hospitality and organisation.  Also for the hardy parents who came along giving Ray Mears some tips on surviving extreme weather.  Emma T's dad for running the line and a very good display by the ref.

25.10.2009
tottenham hotspur ladies u13 4
omonia youth u13 2
friendly

Friendly fixtures are derided by some but this was a valuable training exercise for both teams.  Omonia top of division 2 and full of confidence were well organised with exceptional performances from their brave goalkeeper and tricky dribbling number 10, Melissa, Omonia's manager, should be very proud of their performance.

As for Spurs, the game was used to practice a different system of play, which is always useful is plan A is not fruitful.

The defence coped comfortably for the majority of the game covering well with full backs Christie, Evie and Natasha tucking in, wining tackles and bringing the ball out from deep areas with passing and forward movement.  A great deal of the attacks started from these positions although the reluctance to go beyond the midfield into the final third and home in on goal is a feature of their play that is encouraged but not executed, albeit not beyond all three's capabilities.

Poppy operating at centre half was assured, playing with Jenny Hunnable and Georgia Fairs, especially with attackers running at her, timing interceptions and grasping the support play required of that position.  Captain Jenny Hunnable is so consistent that a lot of her performances are taken for granted, yet when moved into midfield for 20 minutes, showed what a complete player she is; more vocal instructions and encouragement would add to Jenny's "lead by example" aura.

Georgia's versatility is awesome what do you get if you cross an Englishman (Dawson) a Scotsman (Hutton) and Honduran (Palacios).  Not a bad X factor trio.  Georgia Fairs - adaptability and desire personified.  Playing in the dual holding role Emma Lee's intelligence came to the fore, although not renowned for her tackling, it is a part of her game she has worked on and which she is competent, unlike her ability to spot a run and execute a pass which exceeds expectations.  In this role discipline is crucial and a willingness to buy into the team structure important.  The same can be said of Izzie, with a brief appearance, cut short unfortunately by a back injury, a shame as this was a team set-up that was geared to Izzie's strengths.

Kitty's inactivity during the game showed good defensive play by the back four, contributed to a couple of crucial errors in the last ten minutes.  She doesn't need to be reminded of these, but knowing her character and ability, Kitty, with the full support of the management, will regroup and learn to hone her skills for the team effort.

The system played suited certain players, but whatever formation, tactics or instructions coaches and managers impart, class, control and vision is a natural quality that rises to the top and coupled with a feisty determination inherited from her mother, Tara Sandford was tip top today this litter firecracker is the spark that ignites so much explosive forward play.  Contributing a major part in Spurs goals by feeding Tia Fogarty.  Playing at centre forward and wide right in the second half, Tia got the opening goal she has deserved for her tireless performances recently.  Varying her game is making Tia a much harder player to read for defenders with an assertive approach coupled with her open minded character the only way is up for Tia.  Courageously challenging the keeper in the lead up to the third goal executed precisely by Maya, who also fulfilled the above roles.  Maya's finishing is probably the best in the squad, to get into these goal scoring positions takes hard graft - an attribute Maya is not short of, working the Omonia defence in the second half, just like Ian Rush (ask your dad who he is Maya) and involving the wingers to great effect.

Both the wide players Maddie and Emma T attempted to stretch the play when the Whites were in possession as asked.  Emma's goal, opening up her body and curling the ball into the far corner after link up play with Tara for the second goal was joyous her second goal in successive games.

Maddie's performance was hindered by a back injury, yet she still managed to beat her opponent on numerous occasions.  Anticipating the pass rather than delayed reaction would have given both players an advantage and caused the opposition more problems, an aspect of their game that with practice will reap glorious rewards.

In conclusion there were a lot of positives which can be taken out of the game as well as questions ... Can the team play passing football under pressure ?  Can they stand up to a physcial challenge ?  Cope with adverse conditions ? Think about the game and find solutions to problems ? Time will tell.

There is only one group that wins football matches, not parents, supporters or coaches, but the players, they are responsible and should take all the collective deserved glory that comes with victory, revel in it and work for more of the same.

Thank you to Glenn Weaver for arranging the game. Thank you to Tara's dad for running the line.

st. martins u13 1
home counties girl's football league  - u13 div. 1

Football is full of clichés, "sick as a parrot", "you have to earn the right to play", "a game of two halves".  This was a game that epitomized those sayings and more, as Spurs Ladies Under-13s overcame St. Martins 4-1.

St. Martins should have capitalised on Spurs chaotic and insipid defending throughout the team, wasting five clear cut chances in the first 15 minutes, which probably made their manager as nauseous as the proverbial feathered beast.  St. Martin's tackling seemed to upset the aloof Spurs players, who were second to every ball, which resulted in the orange battlers gaining a deserved lead in 17 minutes.  This roused the Lilywhites from reverse to first gear, with Emma T's predatory goal from a good move finishing off a hard working Emma Lee cross.  Half time approached with a more even contest, but still Tottenham were lacklustre and the Luton based outfit content with their excellent performance.

After a half time rollicking which told some home truths, the Whites responded, realising the only way forward in this age group is with a more determined and vibrant approach.  The second period started end to end with Spurs creating, but not finishing their good play and St Martins trying from long range.

Tottenham eventually earned the result in the last 20 minutes with goals from Maddie Sollof placing a shot in the corner from 15 yards and Maya Vio attacking the area from a Poppy Bennett cross and finishing neatly.  Finally Georgia Fairs smashed home from the edge of the area after Tara Sandford's clever set up play.

Injuries and fatigue meant a continuous rotation of subs required in this hard fought game, and although not all players have been mentioned above, every player's contribution is vital to the team effort, but only if they all show the pride and desire to wear the Spurs shirt representing Tottenham Ladies Football Club.

In this competitive Home Counties league Division One, everybody has to be on their game and with a well coached Hampstead set up with ex-Spurs player Yasmin Roudsari prominent in their team.  A hard game was expected and experienced.

Spurs started brightly passing with purpose and after only three and a half minutes, Evie Rose stuck the post cutting in from the left after a swift interchange.  Two minutes later, a move down the right involving Poppy Bennett and Emma Lee was thwarted, but Maddie Sollof picked up the pieces intelligently, keeping possession with a pass to Georgia Fairs, who fed Christie Page ghosting forward from the left back position.  A blind side run from Evie and through ball from Christie created the chance for Evie's inch perfect finish.  Spurs passing continued with captain Jenny Hunnable mopping up any Hampstead attacks and coolly feeding Georgia and Maddie, who were eager for the ball.

Hampstead threatened, especially when the Spurs defence backed off and they held a high line, which, with a bit of coaching, can be exploited; another progression the voluntary coaching staff of Mark, James and Luke hope to develop.  Natasha Smits' positive interceptions and covering were reliable as usual, Izzie Rueben-Crompton's technical ability shone, assembling attacks.  Emma Tammaro and Emma Lee's probing passes and runs contributed to the overall play with Tia Fogarty and Maya Vio making rehearsed angled runs and Tara Sandford linking play inventively.  Half time arrived with Spurs still in the ascendency with all 15 players essential to this effort.

The second half was more bitty with player of of the match Hampstead's keeper/forward capping off a fine performance by scoring their goal in the final minutes.  She denied numerous chances from Tia, Maya and Tara as well as long range shots from Izzie and a surging Rachel Hands.  After a succession of one on one opportunities denied by committed defending and inspired keeping, especially a run and shot from Tia producing a full stretch save in the 70th minute. Maya increased the lead making it 2-0 running on to a precise through ball and prodding home deliberately.

The final few minutes leading up to Hampstead's goal and after were unnecessarily frantic on Spurs part, but forced by creditable Hampstead attacks.  The multiple substitutions made by the manager during the game proved more disruptive than first thought.

St Martins away awaits for Spurs; a further test physically and mentally.  The desire to succeed must come from within and can be nurtured, but not dictated. It was a good win as all wins are.

Thankyou to Rachel and Jenny's dads for running the line.

denham united u13 panthers 3
tottenham hotspur ladies u13 1
home counties girl's football league  - u13 div. 1
Denham United is always a tricky away fixture and this proved true today for the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Under-13s.  The Panthers started sharply and swamped the midfield pressuring the ball well and giving Spurs minimum time on the ball.  Denham reaped their rewards with a goal on six minutes, the number 11 causing numerous problems to the Spurs defence with her pace and power.

Spurs tried to get back in the game, constructing passing moves under pressure.  Maddie Sollof went close with a shot on the run and the team forced a succession of corners.  After Maya Vio was dragged back when clean through on goal Izzie Rueben-Crompton's free kick from the D flew in for the equaliser.  Both defences were steadfast, Spurs with Jenny Hunnable commanding and communicative; Poppy Bennett developing as the game progressed, Georgia Fairs flying into tackles, Emma Lee solid and committed and Natasha Smits competing physically with Denham's left midfielder.  Kitty Chapman had to be sharp and judge her movement off the line from Denham's forward forays.

The second half continued in a similar manner, congestion in midfield still did not stop Izzie, Rachel Hands, Maddie, Tara Sandford, Emma Lee and Christie Page trying to find angles and move the ball across the pitch into forward areas.  Tia and Maya up front were constantly thwarted by their opponents pace and reading of their runs yet persevered, holding up play with some good technique.

The last five minutes won the game for Denham with goals on 64 and 68 minutes; the last goal a killer blow by the Panthers, who through hard work, harassed Spurs and when in possession, were positive and direct.

This was a wake up call that all sides sometimes need, with the attitude of you must work harder when you have the ball and even more when you do not, needing to be taken on board.  Sometimes learning more from games such as this than easy victories.

Thank you to Emma Lee's brothers for running the line.

home counties girl's football league  - u13 div. 1
Derby day arrived at Fred Knights Sports Ground with Spurs Ladies hosting neighbours Enfield Under-13s.

The whistle blows, the cockerel crows and Spurs were certainly in the game taking an early lead, Evie Rose crossing for Tia Fogarty to convert.  Tottenham's switching of play was proving productive letting the ball do the work in the balmy autumnal heat.  Enfield's pacy striker caused problems but the organisation of the back four Jenny Hunnable, Natasha Smits, Poppy Bennett and Evie snuffed out any danger with Kitty Chapman's rapid distribution being crucial to attacking play.  In the conditions, drink breaks and substitutions came at regular intervals.  Emma Lee's looping drive for the second goal came after patient possession from the team just before half time.

Rachel Hands, Izzie Rueben-Crompton and Maddie Sollof all contributed to the style of play combing with Tara Sandford's trickery, Mia Vio's movement and Tia's hold up play.  The full backs overlapping runs provided an effective weapon with Christie Page bombing forward at every opportunity. The third and fourth goals came on the 65th and 67th minutes with Maddie cutting in from the left to place her shot into the corner and Tia again showing alertness to finish from the inside the six yard box.

Another improving performance was there for all to see, but the team's sportsmanship and discipline was also a pleasing factor in their progression.  Thank you to Luke for running the line and come back soon to injured Emma and Georgia.  The Players of the Match awards went to Christie and Tia.

home counties girl's football league  - u13 div. 1

Spurs Ladies Under-13s first away game of the season saw them go to newcomers to the league Brentford who were 2008-2009 Middlesex double winners.  The pitch at Stockley Academy was hard, rutted and bumpy, so not really conducive to passing football at first glance.  However, the weather was glorious and so was the Spurs passing at times.

As last week, it took a few minutes for the team to get into gear, with Brentford shutting down play quickly. Natasha Smits and Jenny Hunnable made decisive tackles and interceptions with incredible bravery; Emma Tammaro, ably deputizing for Kitty, showed safe handling and quick distribution to set up play using attacking full backs Poppy Bennett and Christie Page.

The breakthrough come on 15 minutes with Maya Vio finishing off neat short passing to make it 1-0.  Spurs then increased the tempo with Izzie Rueben-Crompton and Rachel Hands combining offensively and defensively and dictating play.  The second came after a corner was cleared into Poppy's path, who teed up a cracking shot, which the Brentford keeper valiantly, but unsuccessfully tried to palm over.  Spurs' patient passing was improving as the match progressed, with Tara hitting the post on 30 minutes and then delicately converting a pin-point Evie Rose cross two minutes later.

Brentford came out after the interval with vigorous determination, but Tia Fogarty came close twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The fourth goal again came through link up play and resulted in Rachel's pile driver being saved by the keeper, but Maya's goal poaching expertise in following up a shot made it 4-0.

Maddie Sollof moved from the right of midfield to the centre with immediate effect, going close and brilliantly finishing off a move that involved Emma T's throw to Izzie, Izzie back to Evie at right back, Evies return to Izzie, first time pass to Tia on the right, square pass to Maya, who laid the ball into Maddie's path.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable Spurs performance for the spectators and if the team are willing to continue to learn and progress hopefully not the last.  Thank you to Maddie and Izzie's dads for running the line.

Player of the match goes to Izzie and Emma T.

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Under-13s started the season with a competitive game against a good attacking Denham United Wildcats side at Fred Knights.

After an open first five minutes Spurs scored two quick goals, the first a move involving Izzie Rueben-Crompton, Poppy Bennett and Tia Fogarty combining to release Maya Vio who slotted home. The defence of Poppy, Jenny Hunnable, Natasha Smits and Christie Page had to be alert with Kitty Chapman coming off her line to mop up any loose balls. A cross from Evie Rose was controlled by Tia, whose accuracy proved lethal 2-0.

The midfield players adaptability was evident with Maddie Sollof, Rachel Hands, Tara Sandford, Evie and Emma Lee all playing in different positions, without losing effectiveness.  Goals came in bursts in this game.  Tara converting another Evie cross and Emma Tammaro ghosting in to score with her first touch after coming on as sub.  Maya bravely challenged and scored after a through ball from lively Tara, with all these goals coming in the space of 10 minutes.

The second half was a scrappier affair with Denham competing physically and tactically, while Spurs were trying to adapt to a new style of play.  The sixth goal was a result of passing play finished by Emma Lee.

The management of Dave, Mark and James believe in the talent of the players to improve on this good performance and would like to thank Rachel's dad for running the line.  Also thanks to Georgia Fairs for showing team spirit supporting the girls while injured, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Players of the match were Christie and Rachel.
