League - U14 Division 1 |

Today we travelled to arch rivals Denham
for our final League match looking for what proved to be another
exciting encounter between two very good squads. Although the league
title had already been sewn up we knew that we needed to get a result
here in order to preserve our unbeaten league record.
However, apart from the weather there was
very little to smile about early on as Denham took the game to us. We
may have pipped them to the title but they were very much looking like
champions as they created a couple of early chances before being
scrambled away by a panicking spurs defence. They did however get there
rewards when Spurs failed to clear. Denham then played some lovely
football to put their striker through on goal. Despite Emma Tammaro’s
best effort to stop the shot it ended up in the back of the net to give
the home side a 1-0 lead.
Denham grew in more confidence and at
times was playing us off the park. Every time we did seem to get the
ball our passes were either going astray or the ball was bouncing off
our shins. Denham however began turning the screw and if it was not for
some superb defending by Natasha and Rebecca we may have been in serious
trouble.
However, we did gather ourselves and then
enjoyed our first spell of pressure. Xelia, Maya and Chloe grabbed the
game by the scruff of the neck and began running at the Denham defence.
We then created a couple of chances. Firstly, Poppy Bennett flashed her
cross right across goal only for Maya and Xelia to miss it narrowly. A
long ball then gave Maya the chance to score an unlikely equaliser only
for our resident fox in the box to uncharacteristically miss the ball.
We were then delivered a sucker punch.
Just after our best spell of the game so far Denham went down the other
end and doubled their lead. Denham produced some lovely football. This
gave their midfielder the chance to produce a lovely through ball to
their striker who finished clinically.
It was then back to the wall stuff as
Denham put us under more pressure and without us hanging in there they
may have scored again as the half drew to a close with Denham holding a
well deserved 2-0 lead.
While there were a few niggling comments
at each other that I didn’t like during half time, I have to say there
was great determination in the girls during that 10 minute break. While
we have come back from losing score lines this season it was perhaps the
first time that we had been comprehensively outplayed in a half of
football. They looked hurt by the first 35 but angry that it had
happened and extremely determined to do something about it. There was
certainly no time to be feeling sorry about ourselves! One thing that
was key was that we keep the ball and control it better.
While the first fifteen minutes were
miles better in terms of our play we were being frustrated by an
excellently well drilled Denham defence. However pluck away we did and
the game turned into an exciting match that swung end to end. We did
however get a huge slice of luck that got us back into the match. Spurs
attacked once more but was then cleared again by a Denham defender.
Christie Page then ran on to the loose ball and smashed it back from
where it came from. The ball then flew over the defence and took a
wicked bounce in front of the keeper which looped over her head and in.
This raised our spirits even more and
perhaps began to sew seeds of doubt in Denham minds. We were now playing
some lovely stuff and we were now winning 50-50 balls that we were
getting beat to in the first half. Our centre midfielders were getting
stuck in and Jacqui and Rayanne were getting involved in some brilliant
battles with their Denham counterparts. Denham were always threatening
though and they could have restored their lead had it not been for some
sensational last ditch defending from Natasha, Rebecca and an off the
line clearance by Poppy.
Spurs then hit Denham on the break,
attacking with pace the ball found its way to Xelia Mendes Jones who
produced a superb pass to Maya. The next part seemed to take part in
slow motion ... Having it all to do as she powered past the defender and
then managed to pip the goalkeeper to the ball the slam the ball home.
Delirium!
It was now game on as the game headed to
a frantic and exciting ending (as is tradition between Denham and
Spurs). The ball went from end to end and both teams could have won it
in the dying minutes. Firstly, Chloe Ahmet and Maya Vio combined to put
in give Xelia an opportunity, but her shot went agonizingly wide of the
left upright. Seconds later Denham had a chance of their own. Producing
some superb skill the Denham attacker went past two of our girls and
raced into the area. The shot had Emma Tammaro beaten, but thankfully it
went inches wide.
That was the last of any real action as
both teams found it difficult to gain sustained possession of the ball
as the game drew to a close.
Although, it was a poor first half I was
ecstatic with our attitude in the second. We battled, were competitive
and most importantly never believed that we were beaten. The result now
means that we have gone the league season unbeaten which I think Is an
great achievement and something that the players, parents and supporters
should be proud of. Player of the match today narrowly goes to Natasha,
who I thought was superb at the back today.
Our attention now turns to next weeks
Tesco Cup. It should be a fantastic experience but I genuinely believe
we have an excellent chance. We have been drawn along side QPR (Middx),
Ascot Utd (Bucks), Potters Bar (AFA) St Albans (Herts) and Kidlington
(Oxfordshire). Much will depend on how we start with our opening game
against QPR. I believe this game will shape our tournament and it is
absolutely vital we begin quicker than we did today.

League - U14 Cup Quarter final |
|
Today we played Islington
Borough for the second time in three weeks. This time it was the League
Cup Quarter Final. We went into the game determined and not to allow
Islington to cause us the trouble they did a few weeks earlier.
I’m happy to say we
started the game superbly, playing some lovely football with Izzie
Rueben Crompton pulling the strings from midfield. We did not have to
wait long for the goals to come as Xelia Mendes Jones (starting upfront)
took full advantage of Islington’s high backline. She simply did her
marker for space to run free and smash the ball beyond the keeper.
The second was not long
in the making as Chloe Ahmet finally got herself on the score sheet
after weeks of going close. She used her strength and speed to superbly
power through the Islington defence and finish smartly passed the
keeper.
We were really turning
the screw now and it was three soon after. Izzie Rueben Crompton took a
superb pin point corner that narrowly missed Spurs heads. The ball
looked like it was going to be collected by the Islington keeper but she
was unable to hold onto it. The ball fell straight to Maddie Sollof to
score her sixth of the season.
Izzie Rueben Crompton
went close before the girls produced some more lovely football to give
Xelia the chance to score her second of the game and Spurs fourth. Xelia
then scored her hat trick soon after to give Spurs a 5-0 lead into the
break.
After witnessing some of
our best football of the season during the first half the aim was to
keep the standard up. To their credit Islington dug in and attempted to
put us under pressure by hitting long balls to their centre forwards.
However, our back four were up to the task and dealt with the challenge
superbly.
It didn’t take long for
the next goal to come when Chloe Ahmet got a well deserved second goal
of the game to make it 6-0. Soon after Islington managed to get a
consolation goal after we seemed to fall asleep for about 10 minutes.
Nonetheless it was a well taken goal by the Islington striker.
This setback did not
deter us and we managed to get two more before the end of the game.
Xelia Mendes Jones got her fourth of the game to make it 7-1 and Maya
Vio got herself on the act to make 8-1 just before time.
Overall, I thought we
played some superb football today. Particularly in the first half where
it was definitely the best half’s of football we have produced this
season.
Player of the match today
is Xelia for her four goals, although Izzie also deserves a mention as
she was also superb.
The result now sets us up
with a Semi-Final date against Denham United on the 8th May
to be played at Fred Knights. Next week we travel to Denham for our last
league match where we will attempt to go the whole league season
unbeaten.

Today we welcomed Biggleswade United to
Fred Knights in our final home league game of the season. Thanks to
Omonia’s surprise win over Denham last Sunday, we knew that a draw would
be enough to see us lift the league championship.
However, things did not go according to
plan early on as Biggleswade scored in the first few minutes. The
visitors hit a long ball forward, but the defence were unable to deal
with it properly. The header found its way to their midfielder who
produced through ball. It appeared that Emma Tammaro and Natasha Smits
would deal with it, but an unfortunate mix up allowed the striker to nip
in and score.
Fortunately this seemed to give us the
boost we needed and we quickly realised that Biggleswade didn’t travel
down to London for a jolly up. Spurs started to play football but were
frustrated by a mixture of good goalkeeping, defending and a poor final
ball. However, with about 10 minutes to half time Spurs got the
goal they needed when Xelia Mendes Jones broke free of the stubborn
Biggleswade defence and slid the ball under the keeper to make it 1-1.
The goal did us a world of good and we
were now playing the football we are capable of producing, opening the
defence up on several occasions, only for the keeper to produce some
more smart saves. We did go into the break at 2-1 though.
Some more smart build up play between the strikers and the central
midfield helped put Xelia through on goal and she then produced an
excellent half volley which left the keeper with no chance.
The second half started much the same as
the first half ended. Spurs had plenty of possession but were again
frustrated by Biggleswade. As the minutes ticked by it appeared Spurs
took their foot off the pedal and this allowed Biggleswade back into the
game. They went close a couple of times but came up against Emma Tammaro
in goal and the back four who were now defending superbly.
This did allow us the opportunity to
break on the counter attack and did so superbly a couple of times but
were unable to add to the lead. However, with ten minutes to go and with
Biggleswade legs starting to look a little bit tired, Maya Vio scored a
well deserved goal to make it 3-1 and secure the league title.
As I said after the game it wasn’t the
greatest of performances today. This was mainly because we started the
game poorly and had a poor 15 minutes half-way through the second half.
In saying that I am pleased with the amount of chances we created. If we
had the a bit more luck with the final ball and were not up against an
in form keeper then it could have been more. Player of the Match is a
toss-up between Xelia and Maya. Xelia took her goals superbly and
produced some superb crosses from the wing. Maya was superb throughout
the whole game today and worked her socks off in creating opportunities
for herself and others. She fully deserved her goal today. I cannot
decide between them so will give it to them both.
Looking at the season as a whole it has
been a tremendous effort by the girls to win back the title from a very
good Denham team. Especially when you consider that we are still
unbeaten.
However, while I am delighted by what we
achieved so far, I am mindful that there is still plenty to be done.
We now turn our attention the visit of Islington Borough in the League
Cup next Sunday before we put our unbeaten league record on the line
against Denham on the 13th April. We of course have the
Tesco Cup on the horizon which should be a great experience for us all
so plenty to look forward to !

Back in league action this week as we
made the short distance across the reservoir to take on a tricky
Islington side. We made a poor start to the game as Islington created a
couple of early chances due to a combination of long balls and sloppy
defending.
We did however take the lead when Tia
Fogarty continued her superb recent form by racing onto a superb through
ball and producing a neat finish. The goal appeared to breathe some life
into us as it was not soon after that we scored a second. A neat Spurs
move opened up the Islington defence and gave the Maya Vio the
opportunity to score. Her shot was well saved, but Skye Coleing-Lasley
was on hand to add the second by heading into an empty net.
Spurs should have been on their way to a
comfortable win, but to their credit Islington came roaring back with
two goals in quick succession. The disappointing thing about conceding
them was that they were both identical. A long ball hoofed forward
and both our midfield and defences failure to defend from such a basic
ball. I think if we are all honest with ourselves we should not be
conceding goals like this.
Anyway ... back to the game and Islington
continued to press the Spurs backline. Fortunately for us, we were
always a threat going forward and Tia was on hand once again to give us
a 3-2 lead. We had a number of other chances just before half time
but we were unable to add to it before the break.
The second half started well and we
looked a bit more composed when defending from the long ball. We were
also creating a number of chances. Emma Lee fired just wide before
Xelia Mendes Jones and Izzie Rueben Crompton produced a number of fine
saves from the keeper. Emma Tammaro was in action as well down the
other end, but her control of her area and distribution was fantastic,
as it has been all season.
We finally got the fourth goal when Tia
scored her hat-trick and her 19th of the season to make it
4-2. Maya the got herself on the score sheet after recovering from a
knock early in the first half to make it 5-2 and secure the three vital
points.
And what a three vital points they were
as a few hours later it was confirmed that Omonia had surprisingly
beaten title rivals Denham 2-0. The result now means that we now only
need a point from our last two games to secure the League Championship.
Our first opportunity to do this will
come this Sunday at home to Biggleswade. It won’t be an easy game
but it will be superb if we can take the title on home turf.
Player of the match goes to Tia Fogarty.

League U14 Cup - Round 1 |

Today we travelled the short distance to
take on Enfield in the First Round of the HCGFL League Cup. Enfield are
in good form and currently in second place in the Second division, so we
knew that we could not be complacent.
The first ten minutes were edgy as Spurs
found the small pitch hard to get used to. Despite trying to get the
ball out wide to our fast wingers we were unable to do so as the ball
continuously ran out of play where it wouldn’t have done on a normal
sized pitch.
However, it was Spurs who took the lead
when Maya Vio capitalised on a long ball from Natasha Smits. Natasha’s
clearance split the Enfield defence and our resident fox in the box Maya
beat the keeper to put us one goal to the good.
Tia made it two moments later,
outrunning the Enfield defenders to the ball and slotting past the
goalkeeper.
The third came five minutes later when
Xelia Mendes Jones ran down the right and thumped the ball across the
six yard box. The ball then ricocheted off the helpless Enfield defender
and in to the back of the net. 3-0 at half time.
Enfield occasionally threatened at the
beginning of second half, but it was Spurs who were to score extend
their lead. After making a smart save the Enfield keeper scuffed her
kick right into the path of the grateful Chloe Ahmet, who took her
chance to score her fourth of the season.
Tia scored her second next when Xelia
Mendes Jones produced a smart chip over the defence to put Tia through
one-on-one with the keeper and she did not disappoint with her finish to
make it 5-0.
Maya was next back on the score sheet to
make it 6-0 just before claiming her hat trick and player of the match
award for her smart finishing, movement and link up play.
Overall it was an excellent performance
from the girls who did not let the small pitch affect us despite a
settling in period at the beginning of the game. I was particularly
pleased with the build up play around the box which we have been working
on in training.
We can now look forward to a home
Quarter Final tie with Islington Borough on the 3rd April.
Until then our attention turns back to the league with two huge games
against Islington and Biggleswade.

League - U14 Division 1 |

If there is
ever an ‘El Classico’ of the Home Counties Girls Football League, then
it is definitely between Spurs and Denham United (just without the
politics!). In my year and a half of coaching and managing with Spurs
Ladies there has been one game that always produces excitement, action
and goals. I’m pretty sure my predecessors would agree and Sunday's
encounter between the two bucked the trend.
The game
started with plenty of tension and the boggy condition of the pitch
meant that neither team were able to get their normal passing game
going. However both teams eventually settled down and Denham had the
opportunity to open the scoring when their striker went through on goal
producing a good save from Emma Tammaro.
Both teams
continued to threaten but it was Spurs who took the lead after an
excellent move. After a throw in down the right, Poppy Bennett produced
a brilliant cross to Tia Fogarty who managed to get in front of her
marker and fire her shot past the keeper.
The goal set
the game alight and Spurs continued to try and breakdown the impressive
Denham defence but were unable to do so. The attacking nature of the
game also left both teams vulnerable to counter attacks and it was
Denham who took advantage of this as the half came to a close. Putting
Spurs under increasing pressure they produced a number of attacks that
were only snubbed out thanks to the superb defensive partnership of
Natasha Smits and Rebecca Vachos and the fullbacks. However, Denham got
the goal they were looking and probably deserved when a mix-up between
the midfield and defence let in the Denham striker who fully took
advantage by firing her shot passed Emma T.
The second
half started just as it left off. Denham continued with the pressure but
again some superb defending from the back four prevented them from
getting a second. However, an unfortunate mix-up between the otherwise
superb defenders let the Denham strikers in and this time took advantage
by going 2-1 up.
The game then
became frantic as Spurs attempted to take the game to Denham in order to
find an equaliser. Denham were also trying to put the game to bed but
both teams could not seem to gain possession of the ball for a long
enough period in order to put together a serious attack. As the clock
ticked down Spurs seemed to gain the upper hand, winning a number of
corners from some promising attacks. To their credit the Denham defence
dealt with these well and it was starting to look like one of those
days. However, with three minutes to go, Tia Fogarty produced a superb
piece of individual skill to score the all important equaliser. About
twenty five yards out she gained control of the ball and dribbled past
two Denham defenders before using her pace to go past a third to go
through one-on-one with the keeper. Under the circumstances some
strikers may have snatched at the chance but Tia produced a superb
finish past the keeper as the Spurs support went wild!
The game then
had an exciting close as it became end to end stuff with both teams
searching for a winner. Denham came closest to the win but their
strikers shot was straight at Emma T.
As the final whistle blew
we were all left marvel at what was another enjoyable Denham-Spurs
encounter. Although it was not our best performance of the season it was
an excellent result, especially when you consider that we had only one
sub to call upon. The result keeps us 3 points clear at the top of the
league with three games to play.
Special
praise must go to Natasha and Rebecca at centre back who were sensation.
I can’t choose between them for Player of the Match so I have given it
to both of them. Rayanne and Skye also must have a mention as I
asked them to play out of position but they still gave it 110 percent.
Xelia’s tracking back was excellent in the last fifteen minutes. Tia was
superb also and made herself an absolute nuisance from the moment she
came on and fully deserved the goals she scored.
Finally, I
would like to say well done to both sets of players, the opposition
coaches and the referee for an excellent match.

London FA Youth Cup Final |
|
Today saw Fred
Knights host this seasons London Cup Final where the winners would not
only win a shiny new trophy but also a place in the prestigious Tesco
Cup to be held in April.
The game started
slowly with a mixture of both teams trying to get rid of any nerves that
may have been floating about. However it quickly sprang into life when
Emma Tammaro was made an excellent save when Long Lane went through on
goal. From there it was Spurs who attacked, Xelia running down the right
wing and whipping in dangerous cross only to miss the oncoming strikers.
Then it was Maddie’s turn on the left wing to shine as she got in behind
the back four several times and was unlucky not help open the scoring
before she did. However, she didn’t have to wait long. After
linking up well with Christie, she tore down the left wing, beating two
Long Lane players, she then turned inside a third defender just outside
the box and produced a screamer that flew into the top right corner of
the net to give Spurs the lead.
Long Lane continued
to battle but the Spurs left side were causing real damage and their
link up play helped Spurs double the lead, when Xelia Mendes Jones
tapped in from close range.
Some of the football
being played was superb and Spurs went close again through Tia Fogarty.
Poppy Bennett produced a great pass from right back to put Tia through,
but a combination of good defending and goalkeeping prevented her from
extending the lead. She was then put through minutes later, only
for her to stop after thinking that the linesman had ruled her offside.
Long Lane then had a
good spell just before half time but some superb defending from Natasha
and Rebecca ensured that Spurs went into half time 2-0 to the good.
As expected Long
Lane came out all guns blazing after the interval and put the Spurs
defence pressure. For the most part the back four dealt with the attacks
well but Long Lane got their reward when some sloppy passing gifted
their centre forward the ball. She bulldozed her way through the
midfield and was far too quick for Rayanne, who could only bring her
down on the edge of the area. From there, the resulting free kick
was struck into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-1.
The response to the
Long Lane goal was fantastic. Straight from the restart the Spurs
team woke up and began attacking again. Some nice football put
Maddie through on the right; she cut the ball back to Emma Lee, whose
shot was well saved by the goalkeeper. However, the keeper was
unable to keep hold of it and Maya tapped in to make it 3-1.
This did not worry
Long Lane and to their credit they never gave up. However, as they
got forward in numbers, it made them vulnerable to counter attacks.
Skye Coleing-Lasley took advantage of this when a Long Lane attack broke
down. Running down the left of midfield, she went through
one-on-one with the keeper and produced a stunning chip to make it 4-1
to Spurs.
As the final whistle
blew the Spurs players and supporters were jubilant over what was a
superb performance and hopefully the first of many trophies this season.
The man of the match award is too hard to call as there were a number of
superb performances from the girls, so I have decided to give it to the
team as a whole.
Well done !

All thoughts of next Sundays London Cup Final had to be put out of mind
as we welcomed our local rivals and a very much improved Omonia side to
Fred Knights.
Spurs started out with a 4-3-3 formation with Emma T in goal, an
unchanged back four of Poppy Bennett, Christie Page and the in-form
centre backs of Natasha Smits and Rebecca Vachos. Emma Lee, Izzy Rueben
Crompton and Jacqueline McLucas made up the midfield. Top goal-scorer
Xelia Mendes Jones started as right wing forward with Maddie Sollof on
the opposite flank. Finally Tia Fogarty led the line up front.
The first half started fairly well for Spurs as the central midfielders
seemed to outnumber Omonia’s and thanks to some smart through balls were
finding the runs of our front three. Unfortunately, the windy conditions
were causing our defence problems and the Omonia keeper took advantage
of this with some big kicks up field. Despite some hairy moments our
defence handled these well and were able to survive a number of
dangerous long balls.
Spurs were then the subject of some bad luck when Poppy Bennett was
forced to come off as a precaution ahead of next week and then Emma Lee
was forced off with a nose bleed when the ball hit her square in the
face. As a result we were forced back to our normal 4-4-2 formation. On
came the versatile Skye Coleing Lashley at right back and Chloe Ahmet
joined the impressive Tia Fogarty up front.
This seemed to work as Spurs caught Omonia on the break. Izzy Rueben
Crompton picked the ball in the centre of pitch and played a superb ball
to put Xelia through on goal. She didn’t miss, firing across the keeper
and into the net.
We now had Omonia under pressure and went close again when Tia went
through on goal only for the keeper to make a good save. However, it
wasn’t long before we had our second. Some more smart play from the
Spurs midfield gave Xelia the chance to put a ball into the area, firing
a cross right across the six yard box. The keeper got a good hand on it
which evaded all of the incoming Spurs attack and fell to an Omonia
defender. However, in what proved to be a weird moment, the defender put
the ball into her own net to give us a 2-0 lead heading towards half
time.
However, Omonia need to be given some credit for not giving up and they
were rewarded just before the break when a long kick from the keeper
caused havoc in the spurs back four and the Omonia striker produced a
superb finish to pull it back to 2-1 at half time.
As with previous weeks the aim was to not allow the opposition back into
the game early on. Spurs started the half brightly with both wingers
getting behind the Omonia defence, producing crosses that only the
needed one of the strikers to take a chance in order to restore our
lead. Next, it was Emma Lee and Izzy’s turn to have a go from long
range. Izzy’s long range shot hitting the post and the Emma’s attempt
went inches wide of the left upright.
It was then Omonia turn to have a spell and it was them who scored the
all important fourth goal of the game when Spurs were hit on the break
after the attack broke down. The Omonia winger brought the ball out of
defence and sprinted down the left wing. With the Spurs midfield
struggling to get back it gave Omonia the chance to get forward in
numbers and eventually they outnumbered the Spurs defence, the winger
beating the Spurs full back before passing the ball across the six yard
box to give the oncoming striker a tap in.
It was now all to be played for. However, Spurs responded superbly with
Chloe Ahmet and Tia Fogarty attacking the Omonia goal straight from the
restart. Xelia Mendes Jones eventually picked the ball up on the right
and attacked the full back, she combined superbly with Jacqui (now on at
right back) and Emma Lee before crossing the ball into the centre. The
ball was slightly behind Tia but she adjusted superbly, using her body
to fend off the Omonia defender and loop the ball over her head and the
keeper's to give Spurs the all important 3-2 lead.
The last ten minutes was a scrappy but nervous affair, with both teams
battling for possession. However Spurs, had enough about them to see
the game out and take the all important three points.
Despite not having it our own way, I was pleased with our overall
performance today. We did suffer in the first half with the wind against
us but I thought Tasha and Rebecca dealt with it superbly, however the
midfield need to make sure they get back when we are being put under
pressure. Occasionally we keep getting outnumbered at the back and this
was visible today with the goals we conceded. However, attacking wise I
was pleased, and on another day we perhaps could have scored more. Tia
deserved her goal today, I thought her work rate was excellent, as was
Chloe’s. All I think we need to do sometimes is to take a chance by
getting in and around the six yard box when crosses and shots are being
taken. The midfielders did well particularly when in possession. Some of
the movement and passing was excellent; particularly Izzy’s pass for the
first goal and it is for her performance that I am awarding man of the
match today. As well as some superb passing, the shot that hit the post
and her assist, she also protected the back four superbly, particularly,
when we were under pressure from those long balls.
So....the league takes a back seat for the next two weeks. Next Sunday
we host the London Cup Final against Long Lane. For most of the girls it
won’t be their first final, for a few of them it will be. Either way
enjoy the day and the occasion. I know that there will be a few nerves
flying about but to experience games like this is what we are all in
football for.

Today we welcomed a tricky Biggleswade
United side to Fred Knights knowing that only a win would do to keep up
our lead in the title race.
Much like last week, the game started at
a frantic pace with both teams going close to opening the scoring. Emma
Tammaro was quick off her line to deny one of the Biggleswade strikers
when put through one on one. The Spurs back four were also fantastic
early on. Rebecca and Natasha in particular snuffed out a number of
Biggleswade attacks.
Spurs were also having their chances at
goal. Maddie, Skye and Chloe got in behind the Biggleswade defence and
if it wasn’t for some smart keeping and defending Spurs may have broke
the deadlock before they did. However, with 20 minutes gone they did.
The impressive Poppy Bennett made a run through the opponents’ midfield
and produced a splendid pass over the defence to put Maya Vio through on
goal. The in-form striker was then composed enough to produce a chip
over the keeper's head to give Spurs a 1-0 lead.
This gave Spurs the confidence to finish
the half strongly and they made it 2-0 when Xelia Mendes Jones scored
after some excellent football helped put her through to slide the ball
past the keeper.
Going into the second half, the key was
not to let Biggleswade back into the game in the first 10-15 minutes.
Not to be...they came flying out of the traps and were rewarded with a
goal when the Spurs defence were unable to clear their lines. The goal
scorer produced a fine long range strike to put Biggleswade back in the
game.
This gave them confidence and for the
next 10 minutes the Spurs defence were bombarded. This time they stood
strong despite a few hairy moments. However, with Biggleswade pouring
forward in their numbers in search of the equaliser, it did give Spurs
the opportunity to hit them on the break. And they did....As a
Biggleswade attack broke down, Christie Page brought the ball out of
defence and played a smart ball to Maddie Sollof who was just beaten to
the ball by the goalkeeper, however her clearance went straight to Izzie
Rueben Crompton in the midfield who then produced a superb 35 yard shot
to make it 3-1.
Biggleswade continued to put up a fight
and were perhaps a little bit unlucky when Spurs scored their fourth.
Some superb play by the midfielders helped release Poppy Bennett down
the right wing, as the cross came in it appeared that the otherwise
impressive Biggleswade keeper would easily catch the ball only for it to
slip through her hands and into the path of Xelia Mendes Jones to score
her second of the game and round off a good performance.
Today was further proof that some of the
teams in the Home Counties league are improving and that can only be
good news for league. However, despite some uncomfortable moments in the
last few weeks our quality and strength in depth have helped us get
through when we have been under pressure.
As we say goodbye to January I can tell
you we have a pretty exciting month ahead, and as I said last week it
will have a big knock on effect come the end of the season. Next week we
are back in league action at home to Omonia (06/01/11 12:30 k.o.). The
week after (13.1.11) Fred Knights hosts the London Cup Final, which I’m
hoping we can win for the second consecutive year. I still don’t
know who the opposition are yet, but I’m sure everyone is looking
forward to it and will let you know as soon as I know !
On the 20th we are away to
Enfield Town U13’s as we begin our defence of the HCGFL Knockout Cup.
Finally, on the 27th February we are away for our long
awaited showdown with Denham United.

Today we welcomed an
in form Hampstead team to Fred Knights for what promised to be a tough
encounter.
The game started at
a furious pace with both teams taking turns to attack the other. This
meant that both keepers were brought into the action early, Emma Tammaro
making a smart save before a Spurs counter attack gave Xelia Mendes
Jones the chance to attack the space left behind by Hampstead. Her cross
found Maya Vio whose shot went inches wide of the post.
Unfortunately any
other Spurs chances were few and far between due to the impressive
Hampstead defence and a physical midfield that did allow Spurs to play.
There were however some hairy moments down the other end when only some
superb defending from Rebecca Vachos and Natasha Smits kept the
Hampstead attackers at bay.
Hampstead were
playing some impressive football and were perhaps a bit unlucky when
Spurs broke the deadlock against the run of play with five minutes to go
to half time. Spurs finally found their range of passing when a neat
one-two between Jacqui and Izzy helped create the space that was needed
for Xelia to skip past their left back and put in a sublime low cross to
Maya, who side footed the ball past the otherwise impressive Hampstead
keeper to make it 1-0.
The confidence was
back and Spurs then started playing football the way they know they can.
The ball found itself on the right wing again, a cross was put in only
for it to hit a Hampstead defenders arm. The referee pointed to the spot
to give the Spurs their first penalty of the season. Maya stepped
up to fire the ball into the bottom left hand corner. A big five
minutes meant that Spurs took a fortunate 2-0 lead into the break.
We all knew that the
first fifteen minutes of the second half would be huge and an early goal
would set the tone for the rest of the game. We were correct in
that assumption as Hampstead got one back just after the restart.
Some pretty football saw them split the Spurs centre backs to put their
striker clean through, who fired her unstoppable shot into the top
corner of the net.
Hampstead were now
fired up and for the next 10 minutes they had Spurs backs against the
wall. However, as in the first half, Poppy, Christie, Rebecca and
Rayanne (on for Natasha at Half time) were superb, as was Emma T in goal
who had to get down low as the Hampstead attackers tried from long
range.
Spurs finally got
going again when a counter attack lead to the ball being played out to
the left to the impressive Maddie who beat one player before turning
inside another before passing inside to Chloe who then put Tia through
on goal, only for the keeper to deny her. Spurs were through on goal
again when some good play down the left between Christie and Maddie then
put Chloe through, only for the keeper to save well again. Another
opportunity saw a Xelia shot ricochet off a defender and out for a
corner. The returning Emma Lee put a sublime cross in which resulted in
a scramble in the six yard box, ending in an incredible double save from
the keeper.
The match ended like
it began, more end to end action and this time Hampstead came close to
producing something. However, more stubborn defensive work and then a
comfortable save from Emma T ensured that Spurs took all three points.
Well, it certainly
wasn’t the best performance we have produced this season. However,
I was pleased that despite not playing well we came through against a
team that put us under pressure for long periods during the game. I
thought that Hampstead played some smart football at times and I thought
some of our passing could have been better in the first half. Also, the
defence were superb and that is why I have decided to give Rebecca Man
of the Match today as she made a number of last ditch tackles.
Next Sunday we are
at home to Biggleswade. It is an important game as a win here should set
us up nicely for February. With the London Cup Final on the horizon and
a potential away match against Denham to come it will have a significant
effect come the business end of the season.

After weeks of bad weather and the
Christmas break, the Spurs Ladies Under-14s were back in action. As
Denham slipped up last Sunday and were not in league action, today’s
game gave us a brilliant opportunity to go six points clear at the top
of the league.
Spurs began edgy, with Islington’s long
balls testing our back four. However, Christie, Poppy, Rayanne and
Rebecca dealt with them well and despite a few hairy moments we managed
to get a foothold in the game when Xelia Mendes Jones created a number
of opportunities for Maya and Tia, only for the Islington keeper to save
well.
With the wind with them the Spurs attack
continued to put Islington under sustained pressure. Another great
chance to open the scoring occurred when Poppy Bennett picked up the
ball from about 25 yards out. Poppy jinked her way past three players
before being brought down for a free kick just outside the area. Up
stepped Izzy, whose superb curling free kick crashed off the underside
of the crossbar and according to a number of the Spurs players, over the
line ? Unfortunately, with the number of players in front of him,
the referee was not able to give it and it was cleared away ... it
really was a fantastic strike.
Spurs were further frustrated just before
half time when it appeared they should have been awarded a penalty. Maya
Vio going through on goal only for the Islington defender to pull her
shirt. Despite this the decision was not given and both teams went in at
half time with the score at 0-0.
Although, the first half was frustrating
the beginning of the second half brought Spurs the goals they deserved.
Maya opened the scoring when some neat passing put her through one on
one. This time the keeper had no chance as Maya fired her shot
into the bottom right hand corner.
Spurs then got the luck that was missing
in the first half. Skye made a dazzling run down the left of midfield
and passed in side to Maya. On this occasion the strikers touch let her
down and as the Islington keeper made a clearance the ball ricochet off
Skye’s back and flew into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Spurs were now on a rampage and Xelia
made it 3-0 when her blinding pace got her in behind the Islington
defence, firing her shot across the helpless keeper and into the net.
Maya made it four five minutes with another neat finish before some
excellent football and a fantastic through ball from Jackie gave Xelia
the opportunity to score her second and finish the match.
Despite some hairy and frustrating
moments in the first half I thought that the overall performance was
superb particularly in the second half.
Our defence stood firm despite some
dangerous long balls that caused us problems especially when the wind
was against us. More pleasing for me was that they attempted to create
space for the team by playing the ball along the back four- something
that we have recently been working on in training. Christie and Poppy
were once again in the action looking to get forward as much as possible
while still having the stamina to get makes some superb tackles. As for
our three centre backs, I really cannot praise them enough. Rebecca,
Rayanne and Natasha have all improved massively from the beginning of
the season and it really does give me a headache trying to decide which
two of them should start each week.
The midfield was also much improved in
the second half. If I was to make one criticism it is that we must track
back and help the defence when we do not have the ball! Apart from that
I thought that Jackie and Izzy really pulled the strings in the centre
of midfield, creating a number of goal scoring opportunities for the
wingers and strikers with some superb through balls. Xelia added two
more to her superb goal scoring record and was perhaps unlucky not to
have got a few more. Maddie got in on the act in the second half and
showed tremendous skill a number of times to open up the Islington
defence and on another day would have been rewarded with a goal. I was
also delighted to see Skye get on the score sheet as she was excellent
when she came on. I think that she is one of those players that despite
not always being mentioned as much as others she brings a great
determination and with it a first class attitude to the game.
Our strikers also had a good day today. I
thought that Tia linked up well with our midfield and brought others
into the game when possible. If it wasn’t for some good saves from the
Islington keeper she would have also been on the score sheet today. Maya
was also back in the team and amongst the goals. Although it seemed that
she hadn’t played in a while it certainly didn’t look like it as two
goals capped an all round superb performance.
I also have to mention Emma T in goal.
Although there were some periods in the second half when she had little
to do, she made a cracking save in the last five minutes to preserve the
clean sheet.
So...with another three points in the bag
our attention now turns to next Sunday’s home game against Hampstead.
Their confidence will be high after beating Denham last week so we will
have to be at our very best in order to maintain our lead at the top. We
should also welcome back Emma Lee to the squad after a long injury lay
off and with Chloe back among our attacking options we should have a
full squad and an exciting game ahead.
Last but not least today’s man of the
match award goes to Izzy for a brilliant performance from start to
finish.

Spurs Ladies Under-14s were away today to
Hampstead playing in a delightful Regents Park but once again the pitch
is on the small side.
The girls
get off to a great start and all the action was down the Hampstead end
and Emma Lee gets our first goal within five minutes. Hampstead then
got a free kick just outside the area which was well saved by stand in
keeper Emma Tammaro, but going for the ball against three Hampstead
players caused her to get kicked and go down for a short while, but she
managed to get up and carry on. Spurs then had some excellent play in
front of the Hampstead goal but the game was 35 minutes in before our
second goal came from a cross from Maddie Sollof for Maya Vio to hit
home.
In the second half, Spurs put the
pressure on Hampstead and played some good football and the third goal
came following a great run by Xelia Mendes Jones down the right. The
fourth was a lovely ball from Xelia to Maya who took on three defenders
before it hit the back of the net. Chloe Ahmet then made a great run
down the left and outsmarted the Hampstead defence again to make it
5-0.
Emma Tammaro was then knocked over by
a Hampstead player when saving a cross that she was running in for and
Tia Fogarty stepped up to take over between the sticks. Shortly after
we were once again up the Hampstead end and Xelia crossed for Maya to
finish to make it six. Unfortunately, in the last minute of the game
Tia dived and tried hard to knock a ball out, before it crossed the
line, but a goal was given to make the final score 1-6 to Spurs
Ladies.

running the line.

Spurs Ladies were away today to Islington
Borough, newly promoted to our league. With a few players missing due
to half term, some small changes to spurs positions were needed.
The first change paid off two minutes in
when Poppy Bennett playing right midfield made a run and crossed the
ball nicely which both Chloe Ahmet and Maya Vio ran towards to finish
but the goal was given to Chloe. The next time Poppy made a run she
popped it in the back of the net herself making it 2-0. Although there
were a few more chances the Islington keeper managed to keep them clear
of goal until Spurs made a substitution and brought on Tia Fogarty in
the middle, who passed to Maya who did her usual trick on the goalie to
make it three. Isabella Rueben-Crompton shot a perfect corner but again
it was saved by the goalie. Spurs continued to pass the ball around the
pitch with Jacqueline McLucas giving it everything in midfield until
Maya sent it wide to Poppy who crossed it back to Maya who tapped it to
Tia to give her a well deserved first goal of the day. Just before the
half time whistle Spurs made it five with a great cross from Skye
Coleing-Lasley from the left wing which once again Maya was on the end
of. With excellent defending by Natasha Smits, Rebecca Vachos and
Rayanne John Baptiste Bastien Islington were unable to score and Emma
Tammaro kept a clean sheet.
The second half was just as exciting
with the first of the half coming after a great run from Natasha to beat
their attacker, who looked up and passed out wide to Poppy on the right,
who passed back into Maya, who made it her hat trick. Unfortunately
Spurs guard went down for just a brief moment and Islington managed to
pop one passed Kitty Chapman.
Spurs did not falter and when Maya was
pushed to the ground, Isabella was up for the free kick just outside the
area and although the shouts of ‘treat it like a corner’ were bellowed,
Isabella confused everyone, especially the Islington keeper and hit it
along the ground and it rolled in the bottom right hand corner to make
it 7-0 for Spurs. Isabella then took a corner and hit it as she
usually does, neatly into Tia who made it her second and Spurs' number
eight. Maddie Sollof came back on after a rest to play in her usual
spot on the wing, but after a couple of near misses she ran with
determination towards the keeper, who managed yet again to save her
shot, but Maya was on hand to catch the deflection and the final score
was 1-9 to Spurs Ladies.
Thanks to Rayanne’s brother for
running the line.

Spurs Ladies
Under-14s turned up today for the first time away at Biggleswade, all
looking the part finally wearing their new white kit.
Although the
pitch was smaller than we were used to, we got off to a good start and
ten minutes in Chloe Ahmet’s ball rebounded off the Biggleswade keeper
and rolled in the back of the net, but as they say they all count. Half
way through the first half unfortunately Rebecca Vachos accidentally
hand-balled in the box and Biggleswade drew 1-1 with the penalty given.
Spurs made some substitutions, but although our midfielders were passing
balls through to the strikers, Biggleswade’s goal was well defended. In
the final minute of the half, Biggleswade got a corner and scored from a
deflection from one of the Spurs players making it 2-1 to them.
The second
half saw the girls still struggling with the smallness of the pitch and
although defender Rebecca made up for her earlier mistake on numerous
occasions, without their usual space, Spurs Ladies struggled to liven up
the game.
Emma Lee
crossed some excellent corners, but we could not finish them. Finally,
Poppy Bennett, who was playing at the back, pushed up yet again and this
time her cross was just right for Maya Vio to head in for the equaliser.
We were then blessed with another great cross this time from the left
from Tia Fogarty and Maya scored her second of the day. This was
closely followed from another great pass from Poppy at the back to Maya,
who ran and tricked the goalie to score her hat trick. Poppy’s next
cross was to Xelia Mendes Jones, who shot the ball over the goalie's
head and into the back of the net to make it 2-5 to Spurs.
With only
minutes to go, Biggleswade managed to get through the Spurs defence and
slipped the ball past Emma Tammaro, who had come out, but could not get
back to defend her goal line.
Thanks to
Rebecca’s Dad for running the line.

Finally Spurs Ladies had a
game worth watching when we were faced with top of the league Denham
United. We were
slow to start and Denham took advantage and got a goal five minutes in.
This did not deter our girls, who fought back and a great cross from
Poppy Bennett to Maya Vio’s head unfortunately missed, but gave them the
confidence to play their game and not panic.
Ten minutes into the game
and again Denham made a run and scored their second over Kitty Chapman’s
head. This woke our girls up and they started to play some good
football which eventually paid off with an excellent cross from Maddie
Sollof, over the goalie's head, but to Xelia Mendes-Jones’ feet and in
the bottom corner.
Spurs then started to
control the game. Poppy Bennett, Jacqueline McLucas and Xelia
Mendes-Jones were very strong down the right, with Xelia hitting one
over the cross bar and even Poppy taking a shot, but it was not meant to
be and we went into a half time rest at 1-2.
The second half saw some
substitutions, but the girls settled in well and it wasn’t long with
Chloe Ahmet’s persistence up the left before Skye Coleing-Lasley passed
to Xelia, who got the very much needed and well deserved equaliser.
The girls managed to keep
Denham away from the goal with captain Christie Page and Poppy Bennett
both clearing off the line and some saves from goalkeeper Kitty kept the
visitors out. Tottenham had lots more chances, but could not find the
back of the net until Maya made her run down the middle, then passed to
Xelia on the right who put us 3-2 in the lead.
We managed to hold Denham
off with some excellent ball control and passing until near the end of
the game, when they managed another of their runs down the left and with
tired legs, we could not catch them and it went straight in to make the
final score 3-3.
Thanks to Tony Tammaro
for running the line.

Spurs Ladies
Under-14s' first away game of the season was against Omonia Youth, but
not being at Fredrick Knights did not deter them.
The first
goal came ten minutes in with good work from Poppy Bennett, who passed
to Emma Lee and finally to Maya Vio to finish. Five minutes later Maddie
Sollof made a run down the left to make it two. The third was a great
goal, placed in the top corner, but was an own goal from Omonia and not
from a Spurs player. Emma Lee took a corner on the left and scored the
fourth and to finish off the half, Xelia Mendes-Jones made a run down
the right, cut in and scored to make it 5-0.
The second
half was just as exciting with Xelia making a run but this time down the
middle of the field and scoring the sixth. Tia was back where she
belonged, scoring goals for fun, getting a hat trick, with the first in
the top corner, the next off a great pass from Emma Tammaro and as the
rain got heaver, the ninth went in. Maddie got the tenth and then Tia
made it her fourth. Last, but not least, the sky’s the limit, a first
for Skye Coleing-Lasley making it 12 for Spurs Ladies.

Spurs Ladies Under 14s
started their 2010-2011 season a week behind last year's Division 1
league table winners Denham United and today’s rivals Hampstead, so with
both of them winning their first games, Spurs had to win this game at
home to start as they mean to go on.
Newly appointed this season,
captain Christie Page never gave up battling throughout the game and the
whole team, old and new, showed they had what it takes.
The first half was end to
end with both teams taking time to settle down. We were 20 minutes in
before our first real chance from Maya Vio came along, which
unfortunately was well saved by the Hampstead goalie. This was followed
by Xelia Mendes-Jones going just wide of goal and it was not until two
minutes before the end of the half that the cross came in for Mia to
touch home and give Spurs Ladies a 1-0 lead.
This gave Spurs a boost
to start the second half, but, although on the odd occasion that
Hampstead broke, our defence were there to clear it, once even off the
line, we could not get that vital second goal. The girls continued to
battle on against the rain as well as the opposition and 20 minutes into
the half, Maddie Sollof turned on the edge of the area and shot the ball
home to make it 2-0 to Spurs Ladies and secure our first win.
Everyone is looking
forward to a promising but hopefully drier season.
Thank you to Rayanne’s
younger brother who ran the line.

After a long wait the Under 14’s began
their league season with a highly anticipated match against Hampstead at
Fred Knight’s on a wet Sunday afternoon. The game promised much as the
last match between the two sides saw Hampstead effectively end Spurs
title hopes last season.
The first fifteen minutes saw a
spirited Hampstead side put the Spurs defence under pressure. Sustained
periods of possession saw Hampstead put together several nice passes but
they were unable to unlock the stubborn Spurs Back four of Jacqui,
Rebecca, Tasha and Christie.
Slowly but surely Spurs began to come
into the game. Maddie and Skye’s pace caused the Hampstead full backs
trouble, putting in a couple of crosses only for the Hampstead keeper to
collect well. Another neat Spurs move saw Izzie shoot wide from long
range before the Spurs strikers finally broke through the Hampstead
defence only for Tia to miss the target by inches.
With twenty five minutes gone Xelia
was introduced into the fray, coming on for Skye. Xelia took up position
the right of midfield with Maddie moving out to left. The impact was
instant with Xelia putting in several excellent crosses, one narrowly
missing Maya and Tia’s head before the Hampstead defence cleared.
However, the next one was not so unlucky. Xelia collected a smart pass
around 25 yards before beating two Hampstead players and whipping in a
low cross towards the front post. This found Maya’s run who got in front
of her marker to fire her shot in off the post and into the net.
The rest of the half saw some
excellent defending from both sides and despite our best efforts were
unable to add to the score.
The aim after half time was to go out
and kill the game as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the Hampstead
midfield and defence were displaying the kind of organisation that one
of Jose Mourinho’s teams would be proud of. However, the more the half
wore on the more we began to impose ourselves. Xelia, Emma Lee and Chloe
all went close with the Hampstead keeper making decent saves. It seemed
that the second killer goal was coming but Hampstead gave us the scare
of our lives before it did.
Hampstead managed to clear a corner
before hitting Spurs on the break. A superb through ball split our
defence in half, leaving their striker one on one with the rushing
Keeper. Kitty seemed to do just enough to put off the strikers shot,
which skewed wide of the goal but not out of play. This gave the Spurs
defence just enough time to recover before Christie cleared. Phew!
A scintillating period of play ended
when Spurs finally got the goal we were chasing.
After receiving a pass on the edge of
the area Maddie breezed past a Hampstead defender and hit a superb half
volley into the corner of the Hampstead net to make it 2-0. The second
goal relaxed Spurs and could have scored another had we not tried
walking the ball into the net rather than taking a shot!
As the game drew to a close the team
kept looking for goals despite my suggestion to hold the ball in the
corner to run the clock down! Nonetheless it was a good performance
against a well organised Hampstead team. The most pleasing aspect was
the clean sheet which will fill our keeper and defenders with confidence
going into future games. If I am being really picky, I thought that we
could have been a bit more clinical in front of goal but all in all it
was an excellent start to the league season.
Man of the match is a hard one as
there were number good performances, particularly from the defenders,
but we have awarded it to Maddie, who capped off a superb performance
with brilliant goal.
Finally, I am aware that Emma T and
Rayanne did not get a lot of time on the pitch today and will aim to
give them more minutes next week.
