It was a case of missed chances and poor
defending as the Under 15's slipped to a 4-3 defeat to Old Elizabethans
in a friendly on Sunday.
Ruth Waghorn opened the scoring in the 18th
minute from a good through ball from Gemma Coots. However, Old
Elizabethans pulled themselves back into the match with two goals before
the break.
Spurs started brightly in the second half
and Chloe Lawrence drew the score level in the 42nd minute. However, Old
Elizabethans went ahead again, before Chloe Lawrence drew Spurs
level. A defensive mistake allowed Old Elizabethans in again to
take a decisive 4-3 lead with seven minutes remaining.

programme with a high competitive and entertaining fixture against QPR,
which saw them lose to the odd goal in eleven !!
In another match where neither side had
more than a single goal advantage during the 90 minutes, QPR edged a
high scoring game 6-5 with a goal in the last three minutes.
In defeat, the hard working forward Ruth
Waghorn scored a well earned hat trick with further goals coming from
Rosi Webb and Jenny Homer.

Despite two goals from captain Gemma Coots, the Under
15's slipped to a 7-2
defeat against QPR in the HGFL on Sunday.
Spurs had the best of the early exchanges and went close through efforts
from
Samantha Chase and Ruth Waghorn. However, QPR came into the game
and scored three quick goals before Gemma Coots pulled one back just
before the break.
Spurs were on their heels for large periods of the second half and Emma
Burdette making her debut in goal made several good saves before QPR
took
the ascendancy to take a 7-1 lead. Gemma Coots pulled one back
towards the
end with a well driven lob over the QPR keeper.

On a heavy pitch Tottenham had to keep going to record a
3-0 win over North Herts. Ladybirds in this Herts. Girls League fixture.
Up against a "well-drilled" offside trap,
Tottenham struggled in the first half. Surviving an early scramble
in front of their goal from a corner, Spurs had a single chance when
Sarah Green broke through the middle, only to se her shot
saved.
In the second half, Tottenham dominated, but only
after a scare when a Ladybird was clean through, with only Emma Burdette
to beat, but the Tottenham keeper did enough to put her off and shoot
wide of the goal.
Sarah Green's corner found Jenny Homer at the near
post to volley home for the opener and the same player ripped a shot
just past the post from an acute angle shortly afterwards. Another
corner, this time from Sam Chase, laid on a chance for Sinem Melin, who
headed firmly past the keeper.
Chase had a fierce shot from the edge of the box
kicked away by the Ladybirds goalkeeper for a corner and as time ticked
away, a pass down the right flank set Becky Andrews away. She
outpaced her marker and struck a low shot that went under the goalie for
the third goal to round up the scoring in a hard fought win in difficult
conditions.

A three goal burst inside the first twenty minutes of
this game wrapped up a comfortable win for the Under-15s.
Sinem Melin raced through the defence onto a long pass
from Sarah Green to slot home the first, while a repeat of the move saw
Green prosper after Stephanie Constantinides put the through ball on a
plate this time. It was a useful tactic that the girls had learned
to beat the offside trap that Ladybirds always employ to try and
frustrate the opposition.
Melin grabbed her second of the game with a shot from
the edge of the box on 20 minutes to make it 3-0 and that was the way it
stayed. Despite taking their foot off the pedal in the second
half, the Undr-15s showed that they had the upper hand in the game and
proved that they could get to the end without any panic, as the home
side flagged. Their play was always well thought out and they were
constantly aware of any infringement that might have been picked up by
the eagle-eyed linesman.
Manager Glenn Weaver said he was happy with the way
the team played in gaining a well controlled victory, in a match played
in very difficult circumstances.

Without really shining, the Under 15's
secured a comfortable 6-1 victory over the Harpenden Colts in the HGFL on
Sunday.
On a poor pitch and windy conditions, Spurs took a while to
settle before Sinem Melin scored in the 10th minute following an
excellent through ball from Sam Chase.
Spurs second goal came after some good build up
down the right before an excellent cross from Sarah Green saw Jenny
Homer hammer home at the far post. Spurs then started to play some good
passing football and went in at the break 4-0 up through further goals from Samantha
Chase and Jenny Homer.
Spurs started the second half tentatively
and it wasn't until sub Gabbi Pierro scored in the 53rd minute after
being on the pitch for less than a minute that Spurs started to settle
again. Jenny Homer completed her hat trick with Tottenham's sixth just three
minutes before the end.
This win virtually seals the runners-up
spot for the Under 15's.

With a number of players out injured and on

slipped to a poor defeat against lowly North Herts. Ladybirds.
Spurs started brightly with goals from Rosi Webb and captain Caroline
Brown

Spurs started the second half slowly and defensive frailties were
highlighted again when NHL took a 4-2 lead. Spurs hit back almost
immediately through the tireless running of Rosi Webb and had chances to
square the game notably through Sinem Melin, but it was NHL who put the
game beyond Spurs with a fifth just two minutes from time.

The Under 15's finished off their league
season and secured the runners-up spot with a comfortable 6-0 victory
over Harpenden on Sunday.
Despite Spurs' dominance in the early stages, the bumpy surface meant
that their normal passing game was breaking down in the last
third. It took until the 20th minute for Spurs to break the
deadlock with a strongly driven goal from Sarah Green and although Spurs
continued to press forward they were unable to add to this goal before
the half time break.
Playing up the slope, Spurs were a different side. Sinem Melin exposed
the weakness down Harpenden's right throughout the half and bagged
herself a hat-trick. Sarah Green added her second and substitute Rebecca
Andrews scored late on to make the final score 6-0.

Girls Football League Cup Semi-Final |
|
The six shooting Under-15s sent North Herts.
Ladybirds flying away home with a win that takes them into the Herts.
Girls League Cup Final.
Spurs started off sluggishly and from a
free-kick conceded about 20 yards out, North Herts struck the crossbar
with a looping dead ball kick. The play swung to the other end and
when Jenny Homer was put straight through, she hit her shot just
wide. It took just two more minutes to open the scoring, when
Sarah Green found herself in the right place when the ball fell in the
six yard box and she got in front of the defender to put the ball away
from close range.
Tottenham's lead was short lived, as a
ball down the left wing found the Ladybirds winger haring away from the
halfway line and as Emma Burdett came out, she slotted the ball past
her for the equaliser.
Taking attack as the best form of
defence, Spurs pushed up the field and from a corner both Cas Brown and
Rosi Webb were foiled by the bravery of the visiting keeper, who was in
for a busy morning. She was helpless in the 18th minute though,
when Sarah Green added her second of the game with a hard drive from the
edge of the area. A neat move just after the restart saw Dom
Clarke break out of defence and feed Jenny Homer. In turn she put
Rosi in on goal, but her shot rose over the bar.
With 21 minutes gone, Sinem Melin put a
shrewd ball through the middle of the Ladybirds defence and Jenny Homer
latched onto it, hitting a rising shot past the goalie. However,
the game was not all one way, with the North Herts. goalscorer coming
close with a lob that bounced off the top of the bar and over the
top. Spurs responded with Rosi Webb having two great chances,
Gemma Coots heading a corner just wide and then flighting a free-kick
just over when Homer was brought crashing to ground when clean through
on goal.
As the half came to a close, play changed
from end to end. Webb hit another shot powerfully, but too high,
the Ladybirds winger shot wide as Burdette came out to narrow the angle
and another free-kick just outside the box was battered against the bar
by Sam Chase.
The half-time break was welcomed by the
players as it gave them a chance to take a breather in the end-to-end
action that had filled the first half. However, in the first
minute, the Ladybirds' keeper saved from Webb with her legs, but from a
corner shortly after, Jenny Homer pulled away at the far post and got on
the end of the kick to force the ball over the line to make the score
4-1.
North Herts. were finding it difficult to
get out of their half and a goal kick was intercepted by Gemma Coots and
she hit it straight back, only to see it bounce out off the post.
The pressure produced many chances. Rosi hit one wide, Sarah Green
put a shot over and finally, Rosi got her reward for keeping on trying,
when Sam Chase pulled a low ball back from the dead-ball line and Rosi
turned to hit a shot past the keeper in the 66th minute.
At 5-1 the game was virtually over, but
Sarah went close again, Sinem Melin was pushed forward and forced the
keeper to stop her shot with her foot and Gemma shot over the top.
With eleven minutes left, a goal kick was chested down by Sam Chase and
she took the ball on to drill a low shot past the goalkeeper's
despairing dive for the sixth Tottenham goal.
To their credit, North Herts. were still
trying to move the ball forward and Emma Burdette was called on to come
out to save at the edge of her area when a forward closed in and then to
hold a shot from 20 yards out.
The game ended with Spurs on the attack
again, but they had done enough to secure a place in the final of the
League Cup.

Girls. Football League Cup Final
(Played at Denham United Ladies FC) |
|
A accomplished display from the young
Tottenham Ladies saw off QPR in the League Cup Final, despite the fact
they had yet to beat the West London side this season. With every
player putting in a significant contribution to the team's success,
Spurs over-turned the odds in beating League champions Rangers.
The game was played in bright sunshine,
dotted with showers, and it was when the rain fell that Tottenham took
the advantage in the first half.
Play had been fought out in midfield for
the first fifteen minutes, as the sides sized each other up, but Jenny
Homer's determination to chase an apparent lost cause paid
dividends. A long ball through appeared to be the Rangers
keeper's, but Jenny threw a diving block and the ball rebounded off her
and into the unguarded net to give Spurs the lead.
Within seven minutes the lead was
doubled, with Sarah Green forcing the QPR goalie to a parried save, but
when the bal found it's way to her on the right wing, she flighted a
shot high over the keeper's head to make it 2-0.
Rangers rarely made a direct threat on
Sam Chase's goal in the first half, with Spurs taking the game to their
opponents, having the benefit of playing with the wind at their backs in
the first 45 minutes.
With 24 minutes gone, Ruth Waghorn beat
her marker for pace and let go a low drive that the goalie did well to
get down to and five minutes later made a run into the left hand channel
and brought the keeper into action again. Caroline Brown threaded
a neat through ball to Ruth soon after and again the keeper was made to
work to keep the ball out.
At the break, the Rangers side must have
thought that the wind would work in their advantage, but there was
little use of the conditions, although they did produce a lot of
pressure for the Tottenham defence to deal with.
A long range effort went well wide from
the Rangers striker, before a defender crept up at a corner to head
goalwards and Chase produced a reflex one handed stop low down to deny
her. With 12 minutes of the half gone, a low shot from outside the
box skimmed off the wet turf and beat Sam to give QPR a way back into
the match, but a hard free-kick was plucked out of the air by the
Tottenham keeper two minutes later to keep the lead intact.
With just over a quarter of an hour
passed, the two goal cushion was restored and a fine goal it was
too. The ball was worked to Gemma Coots on the left wing and her
left footed through ball found Ruth Waghorn, who coolly chipped it up
and over the goalie to calm the Spurs nerves.
Spurs did suffer a couple of anxious
moments, with QPR hitting the bar with a header from a corner and Sam
Chase having to stretch to keep on shot low down at her post out with
her foot. Another cross nearly caught Sam out, but she managed to push
the ball up and then grab it tightly as it came down near the line.
As time ticked away and Rangers strove
for another goal, Tottenham defended stubbornly and hit the QPR side on
the break, which was finely exemplified by Sarah Green and Ruth Waghorn
working tirelessly to hassle the Rangers defence. Waghorn nearly
made it four, when, in the last minute of normal time, she made a run on
the right wing and hit a low shot that bounced away off the outside of
the goalpost.
At the final whistle, the players whopped
with delight at the win and manager Glenn Weaver leapt with joy.
He said, "The girls have deserved their success in what has been a
difficult season, without regular competitive action. I am
pleased for them, because, as a group, I believe they can achieve a lot
in the game."
