The
Spurs Ladies U15 girls travelled to AFC Stevenage for another mid week
game on a pleasant evening. With so little rain of late, the pitch
was rock hard and the ball was bouncing all over the place from the
start.
An
early chance fell to Laura Newby up front but the ball went wide.
Stevenage weren’t afraid to play the long ball and put the Spurs defence
under pressure, but Vicki Blake was dealing with these type of balls
comfortably at the back. Tottenham continued to press and Sophie
Gardiner ran down the wing and crossed the ball in, it was cleared by
the opposition. Sarah Brennan then had a shot that was well saved.
Laura was working hard up front looking for a way through, with good
skill in the middle of the park from Bobbi Cubberley. Another
chance fell to Laura, which couldn’t quite put away on this occasion.
Clara was using her pace on the left and produced a good ball to Bobbi
who then moved it on to Sophie, a quick pass to Laura and the shot
whistled over the bar. A moment later and Bobbi had a long range
effort that went over the top. Charlotte Wakefield was mixing it
up front and battling hard to win the ball.
After
20 minutes, the breakthrough came when Sarah shot from about 30 yards
out and the ball slammed into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Clara moved the ball to Vicki who found Katie Fray with a good ball, the
defender just managed to get it away in time. Sarah produced a real up
and under, which just found the keeper as Laura was bearing down on her.
Sam
Delves produced some good defending at the back and when the ball moved
back up the other end, Katie crossed it in to Sophie with the defender
just taking it off her toes before she could get her shot away.
Sarah had a shot that the keeper held. Still Spurs moved on, with Clara
crossing the ball to Laura and her shot went wide. Lydia Maher (also
known as “Our Kid” by her Mum) ran down the right looking to create some
space with the ball. A moment later and the ball once again found Sarah,
who took aim and fired again from long range to score her second goal
and make it 2-0. Vicki produced a good cut out, with Saskia
Collins also holding firm at the back, with Shoshana Field on the left.
Lydia flicked the ball onto Sophie who ran into a wall of defenders. A
few seconds later and Sophie returned the favour to Lydia who passed it
to Sarah, back to Lydia over to Bobbi and the ball whistled past the
right hand post, as the half time whistle blew.
With
the sound of a brass band playing in the distance, the second half
started. Hollie Watson produced a long ball in the middle to Megan
Oates who moved on to seek out further opportunity before being closed
down. Shoshana produced some strong tackling and still carried on
despite cutting her leg on a fall. Megan passed the ball up front to
Charlotte W who was closed down by the defence. Bobbi executed a good
cut out in the middle of the park, from a searching ball. Lydia passed
the ball on to Charlotte at pace and her shot went wide. Sam once again
comfortably defended at the back, with Saskia. Bobbi ran into the box,
passed to Megan whose shot was blocked away by a defender. Bobbi then
had a long range attempt that was held by the keeper.
The
third goal came when Katie found Sarah with a good pass in the middle
and she wasted no time in securing her hat-trick of the day and making
it 3-0.
Stevenage still tried to push forward and once again Sam did well.
Charlotte W pushed on and drilled the ball to Katie whose shot was held.
Lily Tyrimos was called into action to hold a long range shot. Back the
ball went up the other end and Clara had a shot that was saved. Sarah
looking to find Charlotte W with a long ball, mean while Hollie was
battling hard on the right of defence to make sure nothing came past.
Still Spurs marched on and Clara had a shot the ball spun out to Megan
and her shot was kicked away by the keeper. Clara had a good run down
the left passing a couple of defenders and her shot just went over the
bar. Sam and Shoshana teamed up at the back to defend well.
A
good move next with Sarah to Megan, quickly on to Katie and once again
over the top. Vicki produced a good cut out, with Shoshana also
defending well on the left. Laura burst through the middle and her shot
was well saved. Charlotte W a moment later also had a shot well saved.
Finally Spurs made the breakthrough and Bobbi had a shot that was half
saved and Megan finished it off to make it 4-0. Both sides were
starting to slow down which is hardly surprising after a full day at
school. The final whistle blew. Stevenage have improved every time Spurs
have played then and today was not exception, well done.
Once
again Tottenham had produced a solid Team performance, with the whole
squad playing their part. Quite rightly for her magnificent hat-trick
Sarah won player of the match. On a separate note I know all the girls
wish Charlotte McLucas a speedy recovery after breaking her hand last
Sunday. The next game is the League Cup Final on Sunday Good luck girls,
you deserve it.
Finally many thanks to Mark Cubberley for taking notes for the first
part of the game as I was racing back from the City.
