Home Counties Girls Football
League Cup semi-final |

Spurs
Ujnder-15s Whites faced Spurs Under-15s Blues in the semi final of the
Home Counties Girls League (HCGL) Cup
today at Fred Knights. The Whites had won Group B with a
100% win record; the Blues had ended runners up in Group A, the
proverbial ‘Group of Death’ containing arguably, after Spurs Whites, the
two strongest teams in the League, Writtle Minors and Bedford. The
Whites were top of the HCGL, the Blues 7th.
Very early in the season the Whites had
defeated the Blues running out comfortable winners 6-2 and 5-1. However,
the Blues performances have significantly improved as the season
progressed and the team developed and their lowly league position
doesn’t truly reflect their current abilities. The rule book states this
would be a comfortable win for the Whites; as we know rule books don’t
always apply in the magic of the cup. As Jimmy Greaves’ said ‘Football’s
a funny old game’.
It was good to see the Spurs Whites and
Blues 12th men standing side by side, no need for segregation or sterile
zones here.
Spurs had the full squad of now 15
players available.
However, much like Sir Harry and the boys
in the Bernabeu we had problems. Georgia Fairs and Melody Jones both
suffered ankle injuries in training this week and both were far from
100%. Captain Naomi Coulson was playing with a broken finger, goal
keeper Ellie Hawkins also had a finger injury and Amylee Gullefer was
carrying a long term knee injury. To compound this (and in spooky
similarity to Sir Harry’s last minute change to his starting eleven) the
late arrival of a Spurs player meant last minute changes to the Whites
starting line up which saw Georgia Fairs playing in the unfamiliar role
of lone striker and Rachel Hands drafted into midfield.
On one of the hottest days of the year so
far, it was a perfect day to watch football, but rather too warm perhaps
to play. The pitch was in a good condition but very hard and dry,
despite last minute watering.
Right from the whistle the Whites took
control. On five minutes a free kick from Hannah McWilliams found Louise
Bennett who controlled the ball well and hit a powerful shot on the turn
which went across the keeper but agonisingly hit the post and bounced to
safety. On 10 minutes a cross from Danni Albertsen was met by
Hannah McWilliams but her header went just wide of the far post.
On 13 minutes Georgia Fairs beat two of the Blues defenders but pulled
her shot just past the far post and five minutes later Georgia went
close again after a goal mouth scramble but couldn’t quite find the
necessary power in the finish. On 24 minutes a corner from Hannah
McWilliams was met with a powerful header from Louise Bennett but the
Blues keeper made a comfortable save. On the half hour Spurs’ best
chance of the half fell to Georgia Fairs, having been put through by
Hannah McWilliams, Georgia was one-on-one with the keeper but hit a
disappointing shot straight at her.
On 33 minutes another goal mouth scramble
saw an opportunity for Amylee Gullefer but she also couldn’t find a
finish to trouble the keeper and two minutes later Georgia Fairs again
was put through and she hit a powerful shot from an acute angle which
went just over the bar. Then a good effort from the edge of the box from
Louise Bennett was saved by the keeper and a similar one from Helena
Scotland went just over the bar.
Then on the stroke of half time the Blues
had their best and subsequently only chance of the match when a good
passage of play led to a powerful shot from the edge of the box going
just over the bar.
Half time 0-0.
The Whites 12th man were getting edgy. We
had dominated play, the Blues had rarely got out of their own half but
we hadn’t scored. Was it going to be one of those days ? The
gesticulations from the Whites management team were evident to all. They
were not happy, The Whites finishing had been atrocious, the worst of
the season. A total lack of composure. I lost count of how many chances
we had; I have captured only the main ones in this report. Also
disappointing was our standard of play. Too many times we tried to force
the play, looking for the ‘Hollywood ball’ rather than playing our
triangles, which allow us to take the opposition apart.
The Blues seemed more up for the
challenge, were fighting for every ball and showed a real desire and
determination. As well they tried to play good football, no big boots up
the field but a real desire to play the Spurs way. It was good to
finally play a proper footballing team and not one reliant on ‘kick and
run’.
The Whites came out for the second half
with the half time team ‘talk’ still reverberating in their ears.
Whether tea cups were thrown or football boots kicked, I don’t know, but
whatever was said, it obviously worked. As on 4 minutes we finally
scored. Good work by Amylee Gullefer and Louise Bennett created an
opening and Helena Scotland slid the ball home from inside the penalty
box. Whites 1 Blues 0. Deep joy.
On 10 minutes a corner from Hannah
McWilliams was met by Louise Bennett but with the keeper stranded, she
couldn’t direct it into the goal. Five minutes later and another chance
for Louise, from another corner, this time her header went over the bar
from close range. On the half hour a Danni Albertsen shot from 20 yards
went just wide and one min later Rachel Hands was unable to convert with
a header with the goal empty. On 35 minutes a Melody Jones shot was well
saved by the keeper.
Then the only disappointing aspect of the
match, which had been played in a great spirit, when Rachel Hands was
taken out by a two-footed challenge, in a ‘pincer- like’ move by two
Blues players resulting in a yellow card for one of the Blues.
On 39 minutes a free kick from Melody
Jones found Amylee Gullefer in space, and her ball to Louise Bennett
resulted in a powerful drive by Louise and a good save from the keeper.
At only 1-0 anything could happen,
despite totally dominating play and creating chance after chance the
Whites 12th man were far from relaxed. As we entered the
final minutes the Blues, quite rightly, threw caution to the wind and
began to put pressure on the Whites backline and for really the first
time in the match looked capable of snatching a goal.
However, deep into added time the Whites
finally put the game to bed with a classic counter attacking move. A
corner to the Blues bobbled around the Spurs box for what seemed like an
eternity, with the Whites seemingly unable to clear it more than a few
feet. Melody Jones finally won the ball and found Georgia Fairs with a
40 yard pass, Georgia turned and played in Helena Scotland and Helena’s
return cross was inch perfect for Georgia (who had run 50-60 yards) and
she coolly hit the ball home. Whites 2 Blues 0.
Final score Spurs Whites 2 Spurs Blues 0.
The win cemented the Whites 100% home win record against all opposition
in all competitions this season.
We’re on our way to Wembley (well
Stockwood Park Stadium, Luton actually, but you get the drift) our knees
have gone all trembley, come on you Spurs, come on you Spurs.
We remain on for the double (League and
League Cup) and as all Spurs supporters everywhere know, when there’s a
1 in the year …
So on 22 May we face the Essex County
champions Writtle Minors in the HCGL Cup Final.
As Joey Essex would say on the 22nd we
need to ‘look reem, smell reem, be reem’

Spurs Under-15s Whites travelled the
ridiculously long way up the M1 and beyond to a land where all sat navs
and geo-location technology fails - a mysterious land called Bedford -
to face Bedford Ladies u15s in the Home Counties Girls League (HCGL)
today. After last
weeks massive win in the top of the table clash with Hemel Hempstead
Spurs knew that if results went our way this weekend a Spurs win today
could have seen them win the HCGL with a match to spare. However, this
was always going to be a tricky match. Spurs had beaten Bedford at Fred
Knights earlier in the season 5-2 but had relied, to an extent, on a
super display from the Spurs keeper, Ellie Hawkins. Prior to today’s
match Bedford were fourth in the HCGL, Spurs (as they have been all season)
top.
Spurs had a squad of 14 available.
The pitch was in good condition but
very hard and dry. As they say in all good reality shows this was to be
a ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ for the Spurs 12th man and team - a real
‘journey’.
Right from the kick off Spurs looked
nervous. The opening 15 minutes were an even affair, Spurs were not
playing at their best - maybe the long journey had taken its toll, maybe
it was nerves, but Bedford seemed more up for the challenge. Cries of
‘wake up, wake up’; were heard emanating from the Spurs management team.
The first touch of a number of the
Spurs team was poor and as such we were unable to dominate the game as
too many times the ball was miscontrolled and passes rushed, or the ball
lost to the opposition. Yet again we faced an opposition which relied on
an early ‘big boot’ up field and the pace of their lone striker.
However, on 24 minutes Spurs went one
up when the ball broke to Hannah McWilliams on the edge of the box and
she hit a powerful first time drive into the bottom left corner of the
net. Spurs 1 Bedford 0.
Two minutes later and Bedford had
equalised. Another ball over the top caught out Paige Blackender (for
the first and only time in the match) and the Bedford striker raced
through and as the Spurs keeper, Ellie Hawkins came off her line, calmly
lobbed her. Spurs 1 Bedford 1.
And then the first controversial point
of the game. On 39 minutes a Georgia Fairs corner went straight into the
net, crossing the line, before it was headed clear by a Bedford
defender. All the Spurs players in the box and the Spurs 12th
man could see it had crossed the line, all immediately appealed, but the
referee was unmoved and gave the benefit to Bedford signalling, to
Spurs’ dismay, that the ball had not crossed the line.
Half time Spurs 1 Bedford 1. In a tight
first 40 minutes, Spurs had probably edged it in terms of possession but
had not created enough chances.
Immediately from the re-start Spurs
looked better. The midfield started to get a grip and we looked more
confident on the ball. On 5 minutes Spurs went 2-1 up when a good
passage of play involving Louise Bennett and Melody Jones led to a cross
from Courtney Miller being volleyed home in the most acrobatic style by
Helena Scotland from 10 yards. Spurs 2 Bedford 1.
Yet again within two minutes of the
restart Bedford had equalised. An extremely soft free kick was awarded
against Danni Albertsen to the dismay of both the player and the Spurs
12th man. The free kick from 20 yards was heading for the top corner and
was very well saved by the Spurs keeper but as she fell to the ground
the ball slipped from her grasp and a Bedford player was quickest to
react for a simple tap-in from two yards out. Spurs 2 Bedford 2.
The indignation of the free kick
decision seemed to galvanise the Spurs team and we began to mount wave
after wave of attacks and on 15 minutes Georgia Fairs was put through
and was blatantly taken out at the knee by a Bedford defender, a
definite penalty, but the referee was again unmoved and inexplicably
waved play on.
On 24 minutes Spurs got their third. A
corner from Hannah McWilliams was met on the volley (again) by Helena
Scotland who blasted the ball into the net with relish. Spurs 3 Bedford
2 and wild celebrations amongst the Spurs 12th man were to be seen.
Unbelievably whilst certain members of
the Spurs 12th man were still jumping up and down and hugging each other
Bedford equalised for a third time almost straight from the kick off. I
am reliably informed (as I was too busy still jumping up and down and
didn’t see it) that a ball into the box ricocheted off Danni Albertsen
and went into the Spurs net for an own goal. Spurs 3 Bedford 3.
Despite this Spurs continued to mount
attacks with the best chance falling to Amy-Lee Gullefer on the half
hour who went through one-on-one with the Bedford keeper only to see her
shot saved.
A succession of corners from Hannah
McWilliams followed and on 35 minutes we came closer still when Louise
Bennett (who must be the best header of the ball in the HCGFL) headed
the ball from two yards out, but couldn’t keep it under the bar.
Final score Spurs 3 Bedford 3. This had
been the most nerve wracking game of the season. Bedford are to be
commended for fighting back after going behind three times.
Disappointingly during the match the Spurs keeper was subjected to abuse
from a section of the spectators and she is also to be commended for her
fortitude. For Spurs the positive is that the point earned means the
title is still in our hands.
We
remain top of the HCGFL with one game to go. The situation is now clear.
If Spurs win their final game away to Harvesters they win the title.
That said with Spurs final game not scheduled until 8th May
and Writtle having to win all their three remaining games in hand, all
prior to the final Spurs match, to have any chance of catching Spurs,
come the 8th we will know exactly what we have to do.
Bring
it on !

Spurs Ladies Under-15s Whites
entertained Hemel Hempstead Ladies U15s in the Home Counties Girls
League (HCGL) on
the 3G Astro at New River Sports Centre today. This was your Super
Sunday top of the table clash. With Spurs riding high at the top of the
HCGL and Hemel in second place, three points behind, but with a game in
hand, this was a real ‘six pointer’.
Spurs had played Hemel
twice already this season running out very comfortable winners 3-1 away
in the League and 5-1 at Fred Knights in the League Cup (Group Stage)
and had been the only team to defeat Hemel this season. Whilst there was
a sense of nervousness amongst the Spurs 12th man, hopes were
still high for a victory.
Spurs had a squad of 15 available.
Right from the kick off Spurs took
control of the game. In the opening few minutes a couple of half chances
fell to Helena Scotland but she couldn’t find a true connection with the
ball and the opportunities were spurned.
Soon Spurs began to play their passing
game stringing fluent passages of play together. Spurs began to dominate
the midfield and mount attack after attack. Hemel defended deep and
resolutely and were assisted by poor Spurs finishing.
On 15 minutes Hemel had their only real
attack of the first half which was snuffed out by the excellent Naomi
Coulson ensuring the Spurs keeper Ellie Hawkins wasn’t called into
action.
On 20 minutes a Hannah McWilliams shot
from close range, but an acute angle, hit the post when a pull back to a
colleague may have been a better option. Helena Scotland and Courtney
Miller both went close with chances in quick succession.
On 25 minutes Spurs hit the woodwork
for a second time when a corner from Hannah McWilliams eventually broke
to Tarjau Louis who hit a 25 yard screamer which had the Spurs 12th
man on their feet only for it to skim the crossbar and go over.
The first half had been totally
dominated by Spurs, who were playing by far the better football.
Numerous chances were being created by the central midfield trio of
Hannah McWilliams, Louise Bennett and Melody Jones but Spurs couldn’t
find the necessary clinical finish. With Georgia Fairs and Danni
Albertsen creating havoc down the Hemel right side if Spurs were showing
signs of nerves it was in front of goal. Cries of “relax; relax” were
emanating from the Spurs management team. Hemel were reduced to
infrequent counter attacks utilising the ball ‘over the top’, but were
putting up an effective rear guard action
Half time 0-0 but Hemel had not had a
single shot on goal such was Spurs domination.
As the second half began the Spurs 12th
man knew what was required, an early Spurs goal. With five minutes
played Spurs finally broke Hemel’s resolve when Hannah McWilliams
latched onto a through ball, she bravely went into a 50-50 challenge
with the equally brave Hemel keeper, the ball broke free and Helena
Scotland was first to react calmly placing her shot between two Hemel
players into an empty net. Spurs 1 Hemel 0.
Five minutes later Spurs doubled their
lead. Rachel Hands won the ball, fed the ball to Louise Bennett, who
could have easily shot but slid the ball to Melody Jones who was in a
better position and Melody hit a great shot into the right corner of the
net from the edge of the penalty box. Spurs 2 Hemel 0.
On 20 minutes Hemel had their best
chance of the match from open play when the Hemel striker was put
through one-on–one with the Spurs keeper; her powerful shot was heading
for the top corner, but was turned around the post by the keeper at full
stretch.
Five minutes later Hemel were awarded a
somewhat soft penalty when Paige (known as ‘Chopper’ to Great Uncle
John) Blackender was alleged to have fouled the Hemel captain. The
resultant penalty was struck powerfully but hit the crossbar, bounced
perilously close to the line and was smothered quickly by the Ellie,
Spurs keeper.
On 40 minutes Spurs made the it 3-0
when a cross from Helena Scotland went across the Hemel six yard box and
was met by Georgia Fairs sliding in at speed from close range.
Final score Spurs 3 Hemel 0.
A score-line which does not accurately
reflect the difference between the two teams. Spurs outplayed Hemel in
every department. The central defence pairing of Naomi Coulson and Paige
Blackender were particularly assured and the versatile Courtney Miller,
playing in the unfamiliar role of lone striker, looked like she had
played there all season. Louise Bennett showed strength, determination
and her usual total commitment in every challenge.
A final mention must go to player of
the match Melody Jones who gave an absolutely outstanding performance in
the centre of the park where she orchestrated many of the best moves of
the match.
We
remain top of the HCL with two games to go, next week we travel up the
M1 and beyond to face Bedford Ladies.

We have reached the
‘business’ end of the season. Spurs Ladies U15s Whites entertained Harvesters
u15s in the Home Counties Girls League (HCGL) on the 3G Astro at New
River Sports Centre today. A tough challenge was anticipated against
a strong and well drilled team, many of whom have benefited from playing
together for a number of seasons. However,
Harvesters have had a rather
indifferent season and been hit by a number of injuries, were only able
to field 10 players.
Due to non-availability and illness
Spurs had a squad of only 12 available. This gave an opportunity for
players, who have been on the fringes of the first eleven, the
opportunity to stake their claim for a place in future starting line
ups.
Right from the start Spurs took
control. On five minutes after creating a number of early chances Spurs
went 1-0 up when Melody Jones and Louise Bennett combined well in
midfield with a couple of one-two’s, Louise fed the ball to Hannah
McWilliams who hit an unstoppable 20 yarder into the top right corner of
the net.
With 15 minutes played the game was
still 1-0 but Spurs were playing the best football I have seen this
season. They had opened up the Harvesters defence time and time again
and only poor finishing kept the score line low. However, on 16 minutes
a through ball from Hannah McWilliams found Georgia Fairs, who battled
for the ball with the Harvesters’ defence, won it and poked the ball
home past the keeper. 2-0 Spurs.
Two minutes later it was 3-0 when
Louise Bennett won the ball on the edge of the box, walked through the
defence and coolly passed the ball into the corner of the net. Then,
on 28 minutes, Louise Bennett and Melody Jones again combined well in
the centre of midfield, Louise again found Hannah McWilliams in space
and Hannah’s shot, after taking a deflection, nestled in the Harvesters
net for 4-0.
On the half hour a great passage of
play involving Courtney Miller, Melody Jones and Amylee Gullefer led to
Courtney finishing strongly from 10 yards. 5-0 Spurs.
Half time Spurs 5 Harvesters 0. An
excellent first half. Spurs had totally dominated possession with
Harvesters having only one shot on goal.
Within four minutes of the restart
Spurs scored their sixth goal. A corner from Hannah McWilliams broke to
Melody Jones who hit her trademark 25 yard screamer into the top right
corner.
On 15 minutes a very rare Naomi Coulson
foray into the opposition box at a Spurs corner saw her hit the ball
confidently home from 10 yards. 7-0 Spurs.
Then two goals in two minutes. Melody
Jones won the ball in midfield and found Louise Bennett free in the
Harvesters box, who hit home from close range. 8-0 Spurs. Straight from
the restart Georgia Fairs scored the goal of the game when she dribbled
past three Harvesters defenders (think Ricky Villa’s famous goal against
Man City in the FA Cup Final Replay, 1981 and you will get the picture)
before calmly rolling the ball past the keeper. 9-0 Spurs.
On 25 minutes Paige Blackender got on
the score sheet when the ball broke to her in the Harvesters box and she
hit a good clean finish into the Harvesters’ net. 10-0 Spurs.
On 30 minutes Paige got her second when
good work by Melody Jones on the edge of the box provided Paige the
opportunity to hit a powerful shot home from close range. 11-0 Spurs.
On 32 minutes the final goal and move
of the match; three passes from the Spurs goal to the back of the
Harvesters net. A strong goal kick from Ellie Hawkins found Melody Jones
in space, she in turn delivered a through ball to Paige Blackender who
then played a simple pass to Danni Albertsen and Danni made no mistake
with a cool finish pass the Harvesters keeper. 12-0 Spurs.
In the final minutes of the match a
Tarjau Louis late tackle resulted in her being the first Spurs u15 White
player to receive a yellow card this season and with the Harvesters
player unable to continue, the match ended shortly after. We wish the
injured player a speedy recovery.
Final score Spurs 12 Harvesters 0.
This had been Spurs’ best performance of
the season. I really don’t think Harvesters having 10 players impacted
on the game to any great degree. Spurs were unstoppable, playing the
best pass and move football of the season, every single player should be
proud of their performance, with a number giving their best performances
of the season. It was an absolute pleasure to watch and unusually for
your reporter, I can’t find anything to criticise.
☺
Whilst everyone played well (especially
the midfield) a special mention must go to Georgia Fairs who gave an
outstanding display of wing play, terrorising the Harvester defence and
Melody Jones who commanded the centre of midfield with a superb range of
passing and real intelligence.
So we remain top of the HCGL with only
three games to go and with a League Cup Semi Final also in the mix, as
Sir Alex would say ‘Its squeaky bum time’
☺

This was the big one! Spurs Ladies
Under-15 Whites entertained Writtle Minors Under-15s in the Home
Counties Girls Football League (HCGFL) at Fred Knights today. With Spurs
top of the HCGFL and Writtle fourth (but only three points behind Spurs
and with a game in hand) this was your Super Sunday big match clash.
Back in October Writtle inflicted Spurs’
first and subsequently only defeat of the season thus far with a 2-0
victory out in the ‘sticks’ of Chelmsford. In a somewhat bad tempered
match Spurs missed chance after chance and should have won the game with
ease. A sense of determination oozed from the Spurs squad, management
team and 12th man all eager to rectify the previous failing against the
current Essex County champions.
Despite the half term break Spurs had the
full squad of 16 available.
The game began at a frenetic pace with
both teams looking dangerous on the attack. An early chance fell to
Hannah McWilliams who connected well with a Helena Scotland cross but
couldn’t keep it under the bar from close range.
On seven minutes disaster struck when the
Writtle midfield won the ball on the edge of the box, the ball broke
loose to a Writtle striker who hit an excellent shot into the top left
corner giving Spurs keeper Ellie Hawkins no chance. 1-0 Writtle.
The lead was short lived. On 12 minutes a
through ball from Louise Bennett was cut out initially by the Writtle
keeper who came quickly off her line, however she failed to gather the
ball cleanly and Helena Scotland who had continued her run, showing
great determination and persistence, was rewarded with a simple tap in,
into an empty net. Spurs 1 Writtle 1.
As the half progressed Writtle were
showing more determination than their North London opponents. They
seemed to be winning the first and second ball, and most importantly the
battle for midfield supremacy. Writtle's approach (as per our previous
encounter) relied on the pace, tenacity and determination of their two
wingers being found by the ball ‘over the top’.
Then came five minutes in which the game
turned. On 39 minutes Naomi Coulson made an outstanding tackle on
the extremely pacy Writtle striker who was through with only the keeper
to beat, the ball broke free and the Spurs keeper made two point blank
saves to keep the score at 1-1. Three minutes later (deep into
added time), Spurs won a corner which was taken by Hannah McWilliams.
The ball broke to Melody Jones on the edge of the box and her fierce
drive looked goal bound, but was blocked on the six yard box.
However, it fell perfectly to Louise Bennett who drove the ball home
through a crowd of players finding the smallest of gaps. 2-1 Spurs
and the Spurs 12th man went wild.
Half time Spurs 2 Writtle 1. Spurs had
dominated possession without creating many clear cut chances. Writtle
looked dangerous when they attacked down the flanks but also were unable
to get the better of a resolute Spurs back line, when they did Ellie
Hawkins stood firm.
The second half began exactly like the
first at a frenetic pace with both sides nervous in possession.
Increasingly as the game progressed it became more and more a physical
battle as Writtle’s less than cultured style of play was proving a match
for the Spurs ball players, particularly in midfield. However, whilst we
struggled to dominate in midfield the Spurs back line of Tarjau Louis,
Ella Farsimadden, Naomi Coulson, Paige Blackender and Danni Albertsen
all put in assured performances. In particular Tarjau Louis who had a
difficult opening 15 minutes but went on to look unbeatable.
With 15 minutes of the second half played
a 20 yard curler from Melody Jones had the Spurs 12th man on
their feet only for it to dip just too late and go over the bar by a
whisker.
With the game in the dying seconds of
added time Spurs thought they had put the game to bed when a goal mouth
scramble in the Writtle box led to a Writtle defender scoring an own
goal (although without the benefits of goal line technology your
reporter can’t confirm the ball crossed the line), only for the game to
be pulled back for offside. Cue for the Spurs 12th man
to stop jumping up and down and hugging each other to holding their
heads in dismay.
Final score Spurs 2 Writtle 1.
This was a physical
battle. Whilst the game never strayed beyond acceptable robustness it
was an example of when physical determination and endeavour, at times,
can match skill and ability.
Spurs played the
better football but were unable to get their strikers Louisa Fox, Rachel
Hands and Amylee Gullefer into the game and too often in promising
positions we failed to deliver the right choice of final ball.
Although not at our best today this may
prove to be a valuable lesson, we cannot rely on winning games just with
skill, we must match teams with physicality and determination, (isn’t
that right Arsene – well done the ‘Blues’ J)
Three more deserved points and we remain
top of the HCGL with four matches to go.

Spurs Under-15 Whites
travelled to the home of Garston Ladies today (the Metropolitan Police
Sports Club, Bushey) in the Home Counties Girls League (HCGL).
Garston were bottom of the HCGL prior to today’s match. Early in the
season Spurs had inflicted Garston’s worst defeat so far with a 17–0
thumping at Fred Knights. An easy win was anticipated and maybe a touch
of complacency crept into the Spurs squad, despite the warnings of such
from the Spurs management team. The facilities and grounds at Bushey are
one of the best in Hertfordshire but the conditions were awful. Wind,
rain, and a very heavy pitch made for a poor spectacle. The conditions
hampered Spurs’ free flowing passing game and seemed to suit Garston’s
defensive, more direct style of play. In the words of the ‘Special One’
Garston had decided to ‘park the bus’ in an attempt to keep the score
line respectable. This proved to be a successful tactic.
Spurs had the full squad of
16 available.
Spurs took control of the
game from the kick off and on six minutes went 1-0 up when the Garston
defence failed to deal with a Hannah McWilliams corner which fell
invitingly to Louise Bennett who hit the ball home from inside the six
yard box.
On eight minutes another
corner from Hannah McWilliams was headed home (yes, I really said
headed) by Melody Jones with a near post flick reminiscent of Alan
Gilzean in his prime. Younger readers will no doubt need to ‘Google’ the
great man to understand what I mean. 2-0 Spurs.
On 30 minutes a cross/shot
from Helena Scotland fortuitously drifted over the Garston keeper in the
windy conditions to make it 3-0 Spurs.
Half Time Spurs 3 Garston 0.
It had been a poor first half. Garston were fighting for every ball but
had not had one shot on goal. Whilst Spurs had created chances a
combination of good goalkeeping and indifferent finishing had kept the
score-line low.
Hopes were high amongst the
brave members of the Spurs 12th man who remained on the sidelines
throughout the match for an improved second half. Unfortunately if
anything it got worse.
Chance after chance was
created but either the final ball or shot was poor. The only thing of
note was on 30 mins when a cross from Louisa Fox was handled by a
Garston defender to concede a penalty. Louisa took the penalty
herself and hit a poor shot straight at the keeper.
Final score Spurs 3 Garston
0. On a positive note its three more points and we remain top of the
league. To win when not playing at our best is also a very good sign and
given the dreadful conditions a drop in quality is understandable.

Spurs ladies Under-15 Whites finally
returned to competitive action after a seven week winter break when they
entertained Hemel Hempstead Ladies Under-15s in the Home Counties Girls
(HCG) Cup Group Stage at Fred Knights today. Much like Sir Harry,
the Spurs management team had been busy in the January transfer window
and had signed ex-Spurs Ladies player Louisa Fox (for an undisclosed fee
;0)). This maintained the squad at 16 players as top goal scorer
Jodeane Smith had decided to take a break from football. We wish
her well.
In relation to the HCG League, Hemel were
level on points with Spurs prior to today’s match with only goal
difference separating the two teams. Spurs had played Hemel in the
League earlier in the season and won 3-1 in what was a close match.
Another close encounter was eagerly anticipated, with Spurs having the
full squad of 16 available.
Spurs took control of the game from the
kick off and on 10 minutes went 1-0 up when the Hemel defence failed to
deal with a high through ball, Louisa Fox went through one-on-one with
the Hemel keeper and very coolly finished with a side foot into the
bottom right of the net. A goal within 10 minutes of her debut.
On 17 minutes good work by Georgia Fairs
on the left wing and her eventual cross found Hannah McWilliams on the
edge of the box who hit a strong drive into the bottom left. 2-0 Spurs.
Five
minutes later a corner from Hannah McWilliams was cleared to the edge of
the box only for Melody Jones to volley the ball home from 20 yards into
the bottom left of the net. 3-0 Spurs.
Spurs had totally dominated the first
half and although not playing at their very best were showing signs of
getting back into gear after the enforced break. They had created
numerous chances and the score line could have been significantly more
comfortable. Half time Spurs 3 Hemel Hempstead 0
Within five minutes of the restart Spurs
went 4-0 up when a poor Hemel goal kick was picked up by Louise Bennett
who hit a strong drive into the bottom right of the net.
On 14 minutes Hemel pulled a goal back
when Spurs failed to clear their lines from a Hemel corner and the ball
fell invitingly for the Hemel captain to hit a powerful shot into the
Spurs net giving the Spurs keeper Ellie Hawkins no chance. Spurs 4 Hemel
Hempstead 1.
Within three minutes Spurs restored the
four goal cushion when Hannah McWilliams scored her second with a
powerful shot from 20 yards which although the keeper got a hand to,
could not keep out of the net.
This was a good performance by Spurs
against a good Hemel team who weren’t at their best today. Spurs showed
a real determination and passion to be first to the ball and when we had
possession always looked dangerous, whilst the Spurs backline dealt
comfortably with the Hemel attack.
Final score Spurs 5 Hemel Hempstead 1.
Spurs now progress to the Semi-final as
Winners of Group B. Next week we return to league action away to
Garston.

Home Counties Girls Football
League Cup - Group B |
|
After two weeks without a
game Spurs Ladies u15s entertained Headstone Manor Ladies u15s in the
League Cup (Group Stage) at Fred Knights today. The Spurs management
team had a squad of 15 players available.
In October in the Home
Counties Girls League (HCGL), Spurs drew 1-1 with Headstone and put in
their worst performance of the season on what was a small, poorly
maintained pitch. The Spurs management team were confident that on the
wide open spaces of Fred Knights we would make amends; they were to be
proved right.
With only three minutes
played Spurs went one up when a powerful header from Hannah McWilliams
was latched onto by Helena Scotland who hit a great shot over the keeper
into the top corner. 1-0 Spurs.
The next 20 minutes were a
rather scrappy affair, Spurs’ passing was not as fluent as normal and
the goal didn’t seem to relax them, and whilst Headstone never looked
threatening, they challenged for every ball and were up for the
contest.
On the half hour mark Spurs
scored their second when a great pass from Melody Jones split the
Headstone defence to put Hannah McWilliams through who hit a cool finish
across the keeper into the bottom right of the net. 2-0 Spurs.
A minute later a free kick
from Hannah McWilliams was only partially cleared by the Headstone
defence and fell invitingly for Helena Scotland to volley home from
close range but an acute angle. 3-0 Spurs.
On 38 minutes Headstone
pulled a goal back, totally against the run of play, when a speculative
shot was dropped by the Spurs keeper, Ellie Hawkins and crept
agonisingly over the line. 3-1 Spurs.
Two minutes later Spurs
restored the 3 goal margin when a shot from Jenny Hunnable ricocheted
off a Headstone defender across the box to Helena Scotland to complete
her hat trick with a well taken first time strike. 4-1 Spurs.
Then with four minutes
played of stoppage time at the end of the first half Courtney Miller hit
a shot from 25 yards which flew into the net only for the referee to
blow for half time whilst the ball was in midair en route to goal. A
cruel blow for Courtney.
12 minutes into the second
half and good work by Elaahe Farsimadden down the right wing and her
eventual cross found Rachel Hands who finished strongly from 12 yards
into the corner of the net. 5-1 Spurs.
On 15 minutes another
defence splitting pass from Melody Jones put Helena Scotland through
one-on-one with the keeper and she calmly tucked the ball into the
bottom right. 6-1 Spurs.
On 20 minutes Helena
Scotland scored her fifth when she met Tarjau Louis’ powerful cross
first time to score from close range but again a difficult angle. 7-1
Spurs.
Two minutes later it was 8-1
when a shot from Rachel Hands hit the post and rebounded to Hannah
McWilliams who drove the ball past the Headstone keeper.
Then the goal of the game
and probably now goal of the season (ousting Helena’s goal against
Enfield in the cup). A drop kick from the Headstone keeper was
controlled on the chest by Melody Jones, a quick look up saw the keeper
off her line, Melody flicked the ball up then volleyed the ball from the
half way line straight back into the net. Whilst Melody’s celebrations
were somewhat matter of fact that can’t be said of the Spurs 12th
man and management team who knelt and bowed ‘we’re not worthy’.
Deep into stoppage time
Headstone scored their second when another speculative shot was firstly
saved by the Spurs keeper but again crept over the line. Final score
Spurs 9 Headstone Manor 2.
This was a very one sided
game. Spurs totally dominated possession and could have doubled the
score line. What was most pleasing was the quality of the goals, no
simple tap ins, no goal mouth scrambles, and all were very well
executed. A mention must also go to the Spurs back line who contained
the Headstone attack with ease. Although the Spurs keeper will be very
disappointed with herself for allowing the ball to slip through her
hands for both goals, the very cold weather and the very limited
opportunities she had to touch the ball I’m sure contributed to the
errors.
Spurs now sit top of their
league in the Group stage of the League Cup level on points with Hemel
Hempstead but with a superior goal difference.
In relation to the HCGFL,
Spurs go into the Xmas break top of the league, but only on goal
difference, level on points with Hemel and Writtle with Bedford only one
point behind the top
three.

REDBRIDGE LADIES U15 |

Friendly |

Spurs Ladies Under-15 Whites
entertained Redbridge Ladies U15s in a friendly at Fred Knights today.
The Spurs management team had the full squad of 16 players available
plus ex-Spurs Ladies player Louisa Fox and Tommy-Jo Holloway from our
Under-13s, providing a squad of 18.
Redbridge are currently
second in the Essex County Girls League 'A' Division.
This was a very cold Sunday
morning kick off. However, a number of members of the Spurs 12th
man including your reporter felt no cold ... no we were still basking in
the warmth and glory of Sir Harry of Redknapp and the boy’s outstanding
display at the Emirates against the Unmentionables the previous day.
Maybe unfairly your reporter’s first words to the Spurs 12th man, when
arriving at Fred Knights, were ‘Do we have any Gooners'?’ Sadly most
were keeping a low profile.
Anyway back to the action.
On a very heavy pitch the opening 10 minutes were a rather scrappy
affair. On 11 minutes a strong shot from Helena Scotland was tipped onto
the bar by the Redbridge keeper, only for Jodeane Smith who had been
following up the shot, to pounce with her typical ‘poachers goal’ and
tap-in from six yards. 1-0 Spurs.
Despite numerous attempts on
goal it took until the 40th min for Spurs to get their second goal. A
cross from Courtney Miller was hit home by Louisa Fox from close range,
although the keeper will be very disappointed with herself for allowing
the ball to slip through her hands. 2-0 Spurs.
Spurs had totally dominated
possession in the first half, Redbridge were dangerous on the
counter-attack utilising the pace and skill of their wingers but were
unable to really test the Spurs keeper.
10 minutes into the second
half and Redbridge were awarded a rather soft penalty when Tarjau Louis
was adjudged to have fouled a Redbridge striker. Normally the Spurs 12th
man would have voiced their displeasure, however, given the identity of
today’s referee, shouts of ’Jolly good show Mr Chairman’ were considered
more appropriate. Although the Spurs keeper, Ellie Hawkins, got very
close to the ball it was a well taken penalty. 2-1 Spurs.
On 18 minutes Spurs restored
the two goal cushion when Helena Scotland was played in by Amylee
Gullefer and her shot beat the keeper at the near post. 3-1 Spurs.
On 27 minutes a cross from
Amylee Gullefer was hit home from close range by Rachel Hands, 4-1
Spurs.
Spurs then switched from
4-5-1 to 4-4-2 and five minutes later Hannah McWilliams scored, also
from close range, meeting a cross from Georgia Fairs. 5-1 Spurs.
Deep into stoppage time Spurs made it 6-1 when the ball broke to Danni
Albertsen about 15 yards from goal and her powerful shot gave the keeper
no chance. Final score Spurs 6 Redbridge 1
This was a rather one sided
game. Spurs totally dominated possession and had in excess of 40 shots
on goal to Redbridge’s four. Six goals out of over 40 shots
probably highlights an area we can improve on. However, six goals by six
different players is a good sign. Well done girls.
In relation to the HCGL,
despite not playing in the league for the last two weeks, Spurs still
remain top, now on goal difference only, being level on points with
Hemel Hempstead and Writtle with Bedford only one point behind the top
three. At almost the half way point in the league season this is turning
out to be the closest race for the title I can remember. Next week we
return to league action away at Harvesters.

Middlesex Cup |

THLFC Under-15 Whites
travelled the short distance to the Walker Cricket Ground to face local
rivals Enfield Ladies u16s in the Middlesex County Girls u16 Cup today.
Due to the competition rules we were without the services of our three
u14 players, Georgia Fairs, Jenny Hunnable and Rachel Hands and also due
to injury, Amylee Gullefer, resulting in only 12 players being available
to the Spurs management team.
Enfield were bottom of the
Home Counties Girls Football League U16 Division. A position which
belies their ability.
This was a challenging
match. The year’s age gap on the day seemed to be a major factor.
Enfield are a strong, physical and robust team. Everything seemed
bigger, stronger, longer, whether it was goal kicks, throw-ins,
clearances from the back, we seemed unable to judge time, distance and
flight as well as our opponents.
The first few minutes
underlined this was to be a difficult match with Enfield clearly up for
a local derby. After just seven minutes Enfield went 1-0 with a
somewhat scuffed finish which went in off the post from the edge of the
box.
On 22 minutes, ecstasy from
the Spurs 12th man, when Helena Scotland scored what must be the goal of
the season. A drop kick from the Enfield keeper was controlled on the
volley with one touch and then volleyed back with pace and power from 35
yards into the top corner, sparking the wildest celebrations seen this
season amongst the Spurs team. Indeed, your reporter had to restrain
himself from joining in! Enfield 1 Spurs 1.
With five minutes of
stoppage time played in the first half, Enfield went 2-1 up when an
Enfield player lost her marker and met a corner on the volley from six
yards. Half time Enfield 2 Spurs 1.
The first half had been an
even affair, but Spurs were lacking creative flair in midfield and were
relying mainly on Helena Scotland’s forays down the left wing to trouble
Enfield. Whilst defensively we had limited Enfield to only one
real chance, which they had taken.
The opening 10 minutes of
the second half saw three great chances for Spurs to score with Hannah
McWilliams, Jodeane Smith and Tarjau Louis all unable to convert.
Had any of these gone in the result may have been very different.
On 12 minutes Enfield went
3-1 up when an Enfield striker went through one-on-one with the keeper
and calmly passed the ball into the net and in the 26th minute, Enfield
scored their fourth when Naomi Coulson threw herself in an attempt to
block a cross and inadvertently turned the ball into her own net from
close range. 4-1 Enfield.
Spurs didn’t give up however
and continued to press forward but to no avail. Final score Enfield 4
Spurs 1.
I’m not sure what went wrong
today, Enfield seemed up for the local derby; Spurs perhaps didn’t
appreciate the history and significance of games against Enfield.
Spurs seemed subdued, lacking the same passion for the game. The number
of goal mouth scrambles in the Enfield six yard box that were eventually
cleared showed Enfield’s determination to prevent the ball crossing the
goal line superseding Spurs’ desire. The physicality of the match was
highlighted by the number of injuries sustained by Spurs players.
This was a good game, it was
tough but fair. On a technical level, even though not at our best, we
were probably the better team and played the better football, at times.
Enfield were more powerful, but also, in midfield in particular, played
with intelligence. That said Spurs still had more than enough chances
to win the game. The obvious and significant difference was the quality
of Enfield's finishing, four chances equalled four goals.
In conclusion, Spurs lost
this game rather than Enfield winning it.
Enfield now progress to the
Quarter Final and face Whetstone Youth u16s. We wish them well.
In relation to the HCGL,
with Bedford’s game postponed, Spurs remain top on goal difference, but
with Bedford having a game in hand.

Spurs u15s entertained
Hampstead Ladies at Fred Knights today in the Home Counties Girls League
and
had a squad of 15 players available. Hampstead were
reduced to only 10 players.
Let’s get straight to it,
no mucking about with the weather, the pitch, the conditions, I don’t
have the time. This is the Epic Part 2 (3D version).
The first 15 minutes were
totally dominated by Spurs in the most one-sided period I have ever
seen. However, it was combined with the worst shooting I have ever seen
from most of the Spurs midfield and attack.
It took until the 17th min
for Spurs to open the scoring when Jodeane Smith headed home a Helena
Scotland cross at the near post. 1-0 Spurs.
On 30 minutes a corner
from Georgia Fairs caused confusion in the box and was eventually hit
home by Helena Scotland. 2-0 Spurs.
Five minutes later a cross
from Helena Scotland was cleared to the edge of the box only for
Courtney Miller to hit a clean strike into the bottom corner. 3-0 Spurs.
Only a minute later a poor
goal kick fell invitingly to Rachel Hands who hit a cool finish past the
helpless keeper. 4-0 Spurs.
On 40 minutes Spurs went
5-0 up when a mazy run and cross by Melody Jones led to a Courtney
Miller shot being finished off (just) on the line by Rachel Hands. (The
‘goals panel’ have sat and awarded the goal to Rachel, sorry Courtney).
Half time 5-0 Spurs.
Despite the score line this had not been a good Spurs performance.
Spurs began the second
half with the half time team talk still reverberating in their ears.
Within three minutes of the second half a great move involving Danni
Albertsen, Jenny Hunnable and a Georgia Fairs cross was volleyed home by
Melody Jones for her first goal of the season and Spurs 6th of the game.
Shouts of ‘It’s about time’ were heard from a certain member of the
Spurs 12th man.
On 7 minutes an even
better move involving Courtney Miller, Paige Blackender and Georgia
Fairs led to a Rachel Hands goal. 7-0 Spurs.
On 10 minutes a Tarjau
Louis cross was flicked on by Jodeane Smith and finished by Georgia
Fairs. 8-0 Spurs.
On 15 minutes Melody Jones
chipped a lovely through ball over the Headstone defence to Jodeane
Smith who finished coolly past the keeper. 9-0 Spurs.
On 20 minutes a poor goal
kick fell straight to Jodeane Smith who calmly stroked the ball past the
keeper into the net for her hat trick. 10-0 Spurs.
Three minutes later a
great move involving a number of players led to the ball falling to
Melody Jones on the edge of the box who dispatched the ball into the top
left corner. 11-0 Spurs.
Two minutes later Melody
Jones got her hat trick with an almost identical strike again into the
top left corner. 12-0 Spurs.
Less than a minute later
Jodeane Smith got her fourth with a typical poacher’s goal following a
Helena Scotland cross. 13-0 Spurs.
On 30 minutes a cross from
Danni Albertsen was cleared to the edge of the box to Naomi Coulson who
made it 14-0 with a good strike into the bottom corner.
On 38 minutes a shot from
Paige Blackender was saved by the keeper but followed up by Melody Jones
for a simple tap in and her fourth of the match. 15-0 Spurs.
Just a minute later a
screamer from Louise Bennett from 25 yards made it 16-0 Spurs.
On 40 minutes a great
strike from 20 yards by Hannah McWilliams made it 17-0 Spurs.
With the final kick of the
game and to the delight of ‘Great Uncle John’ Paige Blackender made it
18-0 after selfless work by Melody Jones led to a simple tap in.
Final score Spurs 18
Hampstead 0.
Quite a
game 10
different
goal scorers, Melody Jones and Jodeane Smith each with
four goals, a hat trick for Rachel Hands and first goals of the season
for Naomi Coulson and Paige Blackender.
Praise must go to
Hampstead, who, despite only having 10 players and no recognised goal
keeper in their squad, didn’t give up but kept battling against the odds
the entire match.
Spurs remain top by one
point, but it is very close between Hemel Hempstead, Writtle and Bedford
with Bedford having the advantage of a game in hand on Spurs. Next week
we play Enfield Under-16s in the Middlesex County U16 Cup and may find
ourselves off the top of the HCGL for the first time this season if
Bedford win their game in hand.

Spurs
Ladies Under-15 Whites travelled to Pinner to face Headstone Manor in
the Home Counties Girls League (HCGFL) today. Headstone were fifth in
the HCGFL prior to today’s match, Spurs top.
After
enjoying two excellent results against title contenders Bedford and
Hemel Hempstead this should have been a relatively safe three points. If
only football was that easy. The Spurs management team had a squad of
15 players available.
Whilst the conditions were clearly the same for both teams, the match
was played on a small and very poorly maintained pitch. This and the
heavy rainy conditions contributed to what was to be a poor quality
match, but seemed to suit Headstone’s more direct style of play.
A
great start was made, when, after five minutes, Louise Bennett hit a 20
yarder into the top left. 1-0 Spurs. The next 15 minutes were totally
dominated by Spurs but without creating any further clear cut chances.
Neither side seemed able to put their foot on the ball and play
football. Spurs were at least attempting to play, but were way, way
below par.
On 20
minutes Headstone equalised. A ball over the top led to the Spurs
keeper Ellie Hawkins bravely diving at the feet of the on-rushing
Headstone forward, the ball broke away and fell kindly to the Headstone
striker who couldn’t miss from a couple of yards. There was a suggestion
of a foul on the keeper, but the referee, who failed to keep up with
play throughout the match, was unmoved despite Ellie requiring treatment
from the Spurs physio.
It
took until the last 10 minutes of the half for Spurs to create any
further chances. The two best falling to Jodeane Smith and Courtney
Miller but both were unable to convert the opportunities. Half time 1-1.
The
second half was as poor as the first. Headstone put in a battling
determined performance. Spurs were second to every ball and showed a
lack of desire. This had been the worst Spurs performance so far this
season.
With
only a minute of stoppage time remaining Amylee Gullefer suffered what
appeared to be a serious injury to her knee, after a collision with a
Headstone player, which resulted in an ambulance being called to the
pitch and her being taken to hospital. In the circumstances the game was
ended early. Amylee was released from hospital later that day and is
likely to be out for 3-4 weeks. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
Final
score 1-1 and two vital points dropped. Spurs remain top (just) as other
results went our way.

On 26 October 2010 THLFC U15 Whites
travelled up the M11 and beyond on a ‘jolly boys and girls’ outing to
face Norwich City’s (Centre of Excellence) Development Squad in a half
term mid-week friendly.
Spurs started slowly, no doubt suffering
from the 8:00 a.m. meet at Fred Knights, the three hour coach journey
and the preferred pre-match meal of some of our players (you know who
you are) of burger, chips and doughnuts at 10:00 a.m. !
The half term break had
reduced Spurs squad to 14 players, but we were boosted with the addition
of Poppy Bennett from the Under-14s.
On a huge pitch, the opening 10 minutes
were somewhat frantic, but both sides eventually settled down.
Norwich had a number of technically good players, who were always
looking to pass and move. However, they lacked the ability to
penetrate the Spurs defence.
Spurs looked much more likely to score
and improved as the half progressed, but it took until the 37th minute
for Spurs to open the scoring, when a long ball from Danni Albertsen put
Georgia Fairs through one-on-one with the keeper and she calmly finished
into the bottom right corner of the net.1-0 Spurs.
As the half drew to a close Ellie Hawkins
had had only one save to make with the Spurs backline dealing
comfortably with the Norwich attack.
Half time 1-0 Spurs.
Within a minute of the second half
starting Spurs went 2-0 up. Melody Jones won the ball in midfield, fed
the ball to Georgia Fairs, who put Helena Scotland through. Helena
finished coolly, beating the keeper at the near post. Spurs continued
to control the game and the result never looked in doubt.
On 20 minutes Norwich pulled a goal back
when a free kick was saved by Ellie Hawkins, but fell kindly to a
Norwich striker to hit home from two yards. 2-1 Spurs.
Two minutes later Spurs restored the two
goal cushion when Helena scored an almost identical goal to her first,
this time being put through by Tarjau Louis. 3-1 Spurs.
On 30 minutes, Amylee Gullefer made it
4-1 capitalising on Norwich’s inability to clear the ball from the box,
as she struck the ball cleanly into the net from 12 yards. Final
score 4-1 Spurs.
This was a
good workout for the squad and while the result was never in doubt, it
was good to play against a technically gifted side.
On Sunday
we return to league action against Headstone Manor.

This was the big one! Spurs Ladies U15
Whites travelled up the A41 to meet Hemel Hempstead Ladies in the Home
Counties Girls League (HCGL) today. Hemel were one place behind Spurs in
the HCGL prior to today's match, level on points and goal difference but
with an inferior goals scored to Spurs. More importantly, Hemel had the
advantage of a game in hand and a 100% record to date. Matches
between these two teams have traditionally been difficult to call ...
last season Spurs won 6-0 and inflicted Hemel’s heaviest defeat of the
season on the 3G Astro at New River, whilst in the corresponding away
fixture Hemel outplayed Spurs winning 3-1.
The half term break had reduced Spurs
squad to 15 players and Hemel’s to the bare eleven.
A dream start, when on three minutes a
cross from Georgia Fairs was met at the far post by Helena Scotland for
a simple tap-in. 1-0 Spurs.
Spurs had started brightly and totally
dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes. Hemel were barely able
to get the ball out of their half and on 20 minutes Spurs made it 2-0
when a shot from Louis Bennett was blocked by the keeper’s legs and
rebounded to Jodeane Smith who hit the ball home from close range.
2-0 Spurs.
The remaining 20 minutes of the half was
a rather lacklustre affair, Hemel began to get a foothold in the game
and started to compete strongly in midfield, whilst looking dangerous on
the break. Half time 2-0 Spurs.
The opening 10mins of the second half saw
the better chances fall to Spurs but they were unable to finish or find
the ‘killer’ pass. Hemel were then reduced to ten players for most of
the remaining 30 minutes when one of their players went off injured,
returning only for the final few minutes. However, as the half
progressed Hemel, despite only ten players, got stronger and more
threatening on the attack. That said Ellie Hawkins looked very secure in
goal and dealt easily with the few Hemel attempts on goal.
On 32 minutes Spurs made the three points
secure when Melody Jones won the ball on the right wing and her cross
was met by Helena Scotland for her second and Spurs third with a simple
tap-in.
However, Hemel did not give up and two
minutes later capitalised on a handling error from Ellie Hawkins which
saw the ball fall to a Hemel striker to score from three yards. 3-1
Spurs.
This goal galvanised Hemel and the
remaining 10 minutes was their best period in the match. Final score 3-1
Spurs.
This was a good game with both sides
trying to play good football. Spurs (again) played well in patches but
do need to find much more consistency. Praise must also go to Hemel who
despite having only ten players in the second half, gave a performance
which had the Spurs 12th man edgy and slightly relieved to hear the
final whistle.
Spurs remain on top, equal on points with
Writtle, who now are the only team with a 100% record, and crucially a
game in hand on Spurs.

Spurs
Ladies Under 15 Whites entertained Bedford Ladies at Fred Knights in the
Home Counties Girls League (HCGL) today. Bedford were third in the HCGL
prior to today’s match, level with Spurs on points, with a game in hand,
but with an inferior goal difference.
After
the disappointment of last weeks result and performance the Spurs 12th
man were hoping for a positive reaction from the talented squad. The
full Spurs squad of 16 players were available to the Spurs management
team.
Spurs
started brightly and dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes,
Bedford were unable to get the ball out of their half and on 11 minutes
Spurs opened the scoring when an excellent cross from the right wing by
the overlapping Tarja Louis was met by an even better header from Louis
Bennett which looped over the Bedford keeper. 1-0 Spurs.
Five
minutes later Rachel Hands capitalised on a mistake by a Bedford
defender, went one-on-one with the keeper, but her shot, whilst kept low
and across the keeper, went wide of the post.
The
first 15 minutes had been all Spurs and we should have begun to relax
and increase in confidence. However, the opposite happened, we seemed to
take our foot off the pedal and Bedford grew in confidence and began to
press forward. On 20 minutes a through ball spilt the Spurs central
defence and Ellie Hawkins came out quickly off her line, dived very
bravely at the striker’s feet to smother the ball. As the half
developed Bedford became more and more adventurous whilst we struggled
to grip the middle of the park and found the Bedford attacking play
difficult to contain.
On 33
minutes Helena Scotland won the ball on the left wing showing good
determination and persistence and her neat cross was met on the turn by
Jodeane Smith, who calmly hit the ball home. 2-0 Spurs.
Three
minutes later Bedford responded to make it 2-1. They breached the Spurs
defence when a defensive lapse by Naomi Coulson let the Bedford striker
through one-on-one with the Spurs keeper. Ellie Hawkins made three
point blank saves, but on the third occasion the ball broke kindly for
Bedford allowing them to hit home from five yards.
Half
time 2-1 Spurs.
The
second half began and immediately Bedford adopted a more physical
approach. After eight minutes Ellie Hawkins was again exposed and had to
dive bravely at the feet of the on rushing Bedford striker to smother
the attempt at goal. On 10 minutes Spurs, for the second week running,
had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside when Danni Albertsen
finished well from the edge of the box. But within a minute Spurs
did score when the ball broke to Georgia Fairs on the edge of the 18
yard box who unleashed a screamer into the top far corner.
On 20
minutes the Bedford no. 8, who had troubled the Spurs backline
throughout the match, drew another excellent save from close range from
the Spurs keeper. 1 min into stoppage time and Spurs went 4-1 up when a
cross from Georgia Fairs was met on the volley at close range by Jodeane
Smith for her second and Spurs fourth.
A
minute later and Georgia Fairs got her second when she met a cross from
Tarja Louis to finish well across the keeper. 5-1 Spurs. Five minutes
into stoppage time and almost the last action of the match saw Bedford
make the score slightly more respectable when an excellent turn and shot
from their no. 8 gave Ellie Hawkins no chance.
Final
score 5-2 Spurs.
The
three goal margin gave a slightly flattering score-line. Bedford
are by far the best team we have encountered thus far. A strong
well organised team who play good football and had Ellie Hawkins not had
an outstanding game the result could have been much much closer.
Spurs played well in patches but need to find much more consistency.
Spurs
remain on top, equal on points and goal difference with Hemel Hempstead
but having scored more goals. Only Hemel and Writtle now have a 100%
record and have played a game less than Spurs.
Next
week, yes it’s the big one, we travel to Hemel for the top of the table
(Super Sunday) clash. I leave you with the words and wisdom of
Paul Gascoigne who when asked top predict the result of a forthcoming
match said ‘I never make predictions, and I never will’.

Spurs Ladies Under-15 Whites travelled
to the outskirts of Chelmsford to face Writtle Minors in the Home
Counties Girls League (HCGL) today. This is Writtle’s first season
in the HCGL having previously been competing in the Essex Girls League
in which they had been League, Cup and most recently Essex County
under-14 champions.
After enjoying three relatively
comfortable wins out of three, this was always going to be the first
true test of how far the Under-15 Whites had progressed.
Unfortunately we were found wanting. The Spurs squad of 16 players
was reduced to 14 due to non-availability.
Whilst the conditions were clearly the
same for both teams, the match was played on a small and very poorly
maintained pitch. I have no doubt judging by the number of errors
and times players lost their footing, that this contributed to what was
to be a poor quality match.
The opening 15 minutes were
particularly frantic and nervous, neither side seemed able to put their
foot on the ball and play football. Spurs were at least attempting
to play, but were way below par. Writtle's approach relied on the
pace, tenacity and determination of their two wingers being found by the
ball over the top. The home team had the first goal scoring opportunity
on 20 minutes, when their wingers' pace outstripped the Spurs back line,
but keeper Ellie Hawkins made a good save from close range, pushing the
ball to safety.
On 25 minutes Spurs had the ball in the
back of the net. Georgia Fairs appeared to be held back by a
Writtle defender, but still managed to strike the ball home only for the
referee to inexplicitly disallow the goal and penalise the Spurs winger
for offside. On 35 and then 37 minutes, the two best chances fell to
Spurs and Helena Scotland, who, on each occasion, was one-on-one with
the keeper, but was unable to find a clinical finish.
Writtle looked dangerous on the counter
attack but other than the early save hadn’t really troubled the Spurs
keeper. Half time 0-0. It had been a disappointing first half.
The second half began exactly like the
first with both sides nervous in possession, but, as frustrations grew
on both sides, the game became more physical and less cultured. On 18
minutes, the first opportunity of the half fell to Helena Scotland and
then Rachel Hands, but was cleared by the Writtle defence. A
minute later Helena Scotland again breached the Writtle back line, but
failed to draw a save from the Writtle keeper. In the 27th minute of
the half, Helena Scotland turned provider, when she slid in Louis
Bennett whose shot went over the bar.
This was looking more and more like a
game where one goal would be all that was needed.
On 30 minutes disaster struck when, for
the only time in the game, the Writtle number 10 got the better of
Tarjau Lois (who had an excellent game against their best player)
crossed from the by-line, Naomi Coulson was unable to clear and the ball
fell kindly for the Writtle forward to finish well giving the Spurs
keeper no chance. 1-0 Writtle.
Two minutes later Writtle scored their
second, when Ellie Hawkins failed to hold a speculative shot and the
Writtle forward was quickest to react poking the ball home from three
yards. 2-0 Writtle.
Two goals in two minutes and the game
was dead. However, much to their credit Spurs didn’t let their
heads drop but carried on taking the game to Writtle.
On 39 minutes Georgia Fairs was put
through by Louis Bennett, but the Writtle keeper made a comfortable save
pushing the ball wide of the post. A minute later Hannah McWilliams put
Rachel Hands through, but Rachel’s powerful shot was turned onto the
post by the keeper.
In summary, Spurs dominated possession
throughout the game. Writtle had two chances and scored two goals;
Spurs ... numerous chances, no goals - says it all.
This result outlines that if we don’t
play well, we won't beat the better teams. If we play at the
standard I know we can, we can beat anybody.
A special mention must go to Tarjau
Louis and Danni Albertsen, who had excellent games at full back against
two talented Writtle wingers.
Due to the complexities of the League
table and the withdrawal and subsequent voiding of games involving
Crawley Green, Spurs remain on top, equal on points and goal difference
with Hemel Hempstead, but having scored more goals. The reality is
Hemel, Bedford and Writtle all have a 100% record and have played a game
less than Spurs.
Next week we have the second of three
tough weeks, firstly at home to Bedford then away to Hemel.

Spurs Ladies Under-15
Whites entertained Garston Ladies at Fred Knights today in the Home
Counties Girls League and
had a squad
of 15 players available.
Right, this is going to take a bit of
time, so before you read on make sure you are sitting comfortably,
mobiles are turned off and you are concentrating. This is an epic!
Two minutes played Jodeane Smith opened
the scoring when her determination won her the ball in the penalty box
and she finished from close range. 1-0 Spurs.
Two minutes later Georgia Fairs made it
2-0 when the keeper failed to hold her shot from outside the box.
On 12 minutes a poor goal kick from the
keeper went straight to Helena Scotland who quickly hit the ball back
into an empty net. 3-0 Spurs.
On 19 minutes Spurs went 4-0 up with a
great shot from Jenny Hunnable from the edge of the box which flew into
the top corner.
With the result looking secure the Spurs
coaching staff made full use of the facility to roll-on roll-off
substitutes and also took the opportunity to try players out in
different positions which should prove useful for future matches. In
particular Danni Albertsen (moved from her customary central midfield
position) played the majority of the match at full back and gave an
excellent performance.
On 36 minutes Helena Scotland scored her
second when her initial shot was blocked, rebounded kindly back to her
and she hit the ball home from inside the box. 5-0 Spurs.
On 38 minutes another poor goal kick from
the keeper went straight, this time, to Hannah McWilliams who controlled
it and then lofted it back over the keeper who was stranded well off her
line. 6-0 Spurs.
Two
minutes later Melody Jones played a
perfectly weighted through ball to Louise Bennett who provided a
clinical finish to make it 7-0 Spurs.
In added time in the first half Louise
scored her second with a powerful header from a Hannah McWilliams
corner. 8-0 Spurs.
On the stroke of half time Amylee
Gullefer added to the total when she latched on to a loose ball on the
edge of the box and calmly hit the ball into the corner of the net. Half
time 9-0 Spurs.
As the score line suggests Spurs had
totally dominated the first half and goal keeper Ellie Hawkins didn’t
had a save to make. Despite the score line Garston were still fighting
for every ball, but could not cope with the attacking guile of the
midfield and forwards, whilst the defence were always in command of any
sporadic Garston attacks.
The second half began like the first.
One minute played and a Tarjau Louis through ball found Helena Scotland
who completed her hat-trick with a good finish across the keeper. 10-0
Spurs.
Five minutes later a Hannah McWilliams
corner caused confusion in the Garston box with Jodeane Smith quickest
to react and finishing strongly from six yards for her second goal. 11-0
Spurs.
Hannah McWilliams got her second and
Spurs 12th a few minutes later when she poked home from three yards
after a goal mouth scramble following a Georgia Fairs cross.
It was 13-0 after 10 minutes when Danni
Albertsen beat four players on a mazy down the left wing (think Gareth
Bale and you will get the picture) crossed with her left foot (yes I did
say left) for Jodeane Smith to complete her hat-trick with a simple
finish under the advancing keeper.
On 20 minutes a powerful 25 yard shot
from Elaahe Farsimadden was too much for the keeper to handle. 14-0
Spurs.
On 25 minutes Melody Jones won the ball
well in midfield and played a through ball to Jodeane Smith to rifle the
ball home across the keeper for her fourth. 15-0 Spurs.
Three
minutes later a Danni Albertsen cross was bundled home by Amylee
Gullefer from close range for her second goal of the match and Spurs
16th.
The final goal of the match was scored by
Louis Bennett, who completed her hat-trick, on 40 minutes when her 20
yard shot evaded the keeper. Final Score Spurs 17 Garston 0.
Quite a game - eight separate goal
scorers, one with four goals and two completing their hat-tricks.
This was a good performance albeit against somewhat weak opposition and
at times we played very well. However, there is still room for
improvement, but I can’t really complain given the score-line. Let’s
just enjoy a big win. Next week we face a sterner test against Writtle
Minors, who today defeated the u15 Blues 5-2.
Three
wins out of three, and we go top of the league (above Hemel Hempstead on
goal difference, all is well with the world again, for now!! :)

In a rematch of the previous week’s
fixture Spurs Ladies Under-15 Whites played Spurs Under-15 Blues in the
Home Counties Girls League today at Fred Knights. This resulted in
the Whites playing the Blues three weeks in a row; with a 10-0
(friendly) and 6-2 win to the Whites prior to today’s match.
A squad of 15 players were available to
the Whites management team.
With only two minutes played the Blues
opened the scoring, when Jade O’Brien out paced the Whites defence and
hit a great shot from the edge of the box into the top right hand corner
of the net. 1-0 Blues. The Whites had made a poor start,
which continued for much of the first half although they were trying to
play good football, but their touch and accuracy of passing was letting
them down, while the Blues more direct approach was proving problematic
without really testing the Whites keeper. With 25 minutes played
the Whites began to gain some semblance of rhythm and put more and more
pressure on the Blues defence. A number of chances were created
but wasted by poor finishing and a lack of composure in front of goal.
Half time 1-0 Blues.
With six minutes played in the second
half the Whites drew level when Jodeane Smith poked the ball into the
net following a goal mouth scramble resulting from a Hannah McWilliams
corner. Four minutes later the Whites went 2-1 when Danni
Albertsen hit a goal of the season contender, a 20 yard screamer into
the top corner. Very similar to last week a period of sustained
Whites pressure and numerous substitutions followed, but the Blues
defended strongly, looking to progress mainly but infrequently on the
counter attack. The Whites were not playing particularly well and
were unable to unlock the Blues defence despite significant possession
and chance after chance followed, but poor finishing kept the score line
close. However, with 25 minutes played Courtney Miller played the
ball through to Georgia Fairs whose cross was directed home by Louise
Bennett. 3-1 Whites.
On 33 minutes Melody Jones and Hannah
McWilliams exchanged a succession of passes which led to Amylee Gullefer
stroking the ball home from close range. 4-1 Whites. A minute
later Melody Jones selflessly found Hannah McWilliams with a through
ball and Hannah calmly stroked the ball home. Final score 5-1 Whites.
Despite a comfortable score line this was
(again) a somewhat lack-lustre performance from the Whites, especially
in the first half. However, in the second they showed much more
determination and commitment. Still three more points on the board, two
wins out of two, but we drop to third (on goal difference only, behind
Bedford and (not again!) Hemel Hempstead :)
Praise again must go to Blues who are
improving week on week.

Were back !
After a good pre-season campaign Spurs
Ladies Under-15 Whites played the newly formed Spurs Under-15 Blues in
the first game of the season in the Home Counties Girls League today at
Fred Knights. The fixture secretary throwing up this early fixture was
all the more surprising as we had played the Whites the previous week in
the last of our pre-season friendlies and won 10-0.
The full
Spurs squad of 16 players were available to the newly formed managerial
partnership of Russell and Mark Fairs.
With four minutes
played the Whites won a corner which was taken by Hannah McWilliams and
was powerfully headed home by Georgia Fairs. 1-0. The Whites began to
dominate the midfield and won a succession of corners which were
robustly defended by the Blues, until on 18mins Georgia Fairs scored her
second, following a corner which had been cleared to the edge of the 18
yard box, Georgia hit a powerful shot into the top right corner of the
net. 2-0.
A period of sustained Whites pressure and
numerous substitutions followed but the Blues defended strongly, looking
to progress mainly on the counter attack. The Whites were playing well
but were unable to unlock the Blues defence despite significant
possession and a number of chances and half chance were spurned. Half
time 2-0.
Two minutes
into the second half the Whites went 3-0 up with a great shot from the
edge of the box by Amylee Gullefer which flew into the top left corner.
A frustrating period of play followed when chance after chance was
missed by the Whites. With 26 minutes played Jodeane Smith made it
4-0 with a typical poacher’s goal after a goal mouth scramble. However,
a minute later the Blues made it 4-1 when Courtney Miller headed the
ball into her own net following a Blues corner. Three minutes later the
Whites responded when a cross from Georgia Fairs evaded the Blues keeper
and fell to Helena Scotland to stroke home. 5-1.
Yet again,
just one minute later, the Blues responded when, following a poor
clearance by the Whites defence, Georgina Kam hit a good shot from the
edge of the box which looped over the keeper. 5-2.
The final
goal came three minutes later when Jodeane Smith followed up a shot from
outside the box, the keeper failed to hold it and Jodeane bravely went
in and headed the ball home sustaining a knock to her eye for which she
had to leave the field. Final score Spurs Whites 6 Spurs Blue 2.
Despite a comfortable score line this was
a somewhat lacklustre performance from the Whites, too often they were
second to the ball and didn’t match the fight and spirit of the Blues.
Still this is a new Whites team with only seven players from last years
Under-14s in the squad and it takes time for a team to gel. Still
it's three points on the board which puts us second in the league behind
(not again!) Hemel Hempstead, I look forward to the restoration of the
world football equilibrium very soon :)
To finish, praise must go to Blues, who
responded magnificently to the 10-0 defeat the previous week and kept on
trying throughout the 80 minutes
and never let their heads drop. They even more so are a new team
and already in the space of a week put in a markedly improved
performance.
We wish both teams well.
Glen
Jones
