Despite a limited
pre-season, the U16s played their part in an entertaining friendly
against Essex League champions, West Ham United.
West Ham started the sharper of the two sides and were ahead after only
10 minutes. However, Spurs gained composure and confidence and
were rewarded when an in-swinging corner from Leesa Shields was turned
into the net by the West Ham goalkeeper.
Just before the break, Spurs went behind again when they failed to clear
their lines. West Ham added a further two after the break without
reply to finish 4-1 winners.
Despite the result, it was a good run out for the team with a lot of
positive signs for the season ahead.

With their second game of
the weekend, the Under 16s took on the Reserves in a friendly.
In a tough, physical affair, with the early season bragging rights at
stake, the Under 16s were the first on the scoreboard through Alex
Small. However, the Reserves batted back to draw level in the
closing stages of the half.
In the second half, the U16's quickly bagged two goals through Becky
Shepherd and Alex Small to take a 3-1 advantage, but again the Reserves
battled back in the last ten minutes with two goals to leave the honours
even at 3-3.
A much better performance than the Saturday fixture, the balance of the
team looked a lot better and the team were much sharper in the last
third.

The Spurs Ladies
Under-16s finished off their pre-season fixtures with an emphatic 18-0
win over HCGFL U16 Division 2 newcomers.
After some dogged resistance by Lea Valley in the opening ten minutes,
Spurs managed to hit 10 goals in the first half and a further eight
after the break.
Dee Gilbert proved a real handful for the Lea Valley defence scoring a
double hat-trick, ably supported by a Sophie Petros hat-trick with
further goals from Becky Shephard (2), Rebecca Hunneyball (2), Semma
Halil, Ryah Vyse, Charlie Archer, Shikiera Richards-Lake and Stavroulla
Panayiotou.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "Although this was a big score line, we still
played some nice football in patches. The Lea Valley goalkeeper
also pulled off a series of good saves and we hit the woodwork on six
occasions ! It's a confidence booster for the team who start next
week in probably the strongest league since I started in girls football.
The challenge will be great for the team in their last season before
they move in adult football."

The Spurs Ladies Under 16s
got off to a good start to the season with a 3-1 home victory against
Denham United in the HCGFL.
After an opening period when both sides took time to settle, Alex Small
put Spurs 1-0 up following a through ball from Ryah Vyse. Spurs
started to put together some attractive moves and move involving five
players
starting from goalkeeper Ricole Vyse saw Becky Shepherd finish well past
the Denham United keeper.
In the second half, Spurs had the majority of possession without turning
this into goals. With seven minutes left, Denham United were
awarded, and converted, a penalty. This jolted Spurs back into
action and in time added on, Alex Small scored to make it 3-1.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "Overall, a pleasing performance with some
nice football at times. Cup final one of 21 is over and we need to
be at 100% each week to compete in this tough division. Alex Small
is looking stronger and stronger every game and I thought Charlie Archer
did a good job alongside Shikiera at the back. Luton will be tough
next week, but the girls need these fixtures as they prepare for the
women's game next year." |

The Spurs Ladies Under 16s
came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw with Luton Town in
the HCGFL on Sunday.
After conceding a sloppy goal in the opening 90 seconds after failing to
clear a corner, Spurs started to come back into the game and were
rewarded when good work down the right from Becky Shepherd was converted
by Stavroulla Panayiotou.
Play tended to shift from end to end over the rest of the first half
with both defences holding strong.
In the second half, Luton regained their lead following the award of a
penalty, but again Spurs came back and Becky Shepherd scored after good
work from Alex Small.
Both sides gave it their all in the closing stages, but a draw was
probably the fairest result.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "We've got through two of our 21 'cup ties'
this season. I'm pleased that we came back twice to draw that
shows our battling nature. Ricole Vyse again put in a great
performance and the whole of the defence was strong in another physical
encounter. We need to start linking out play a little better
through the midfield but this will come. Watford will be a strong
test next week to keep the unbeaten run going".

The Under-16s can count
themselves highly unlucky in not achieving a least a point as the lost
narrowly to Watford Ladies 1-0 in the HCGFL on Sunday.
Watford had the best of the early exchanges and took the lead after 17
minutes when a speculative cross from the right sailed beyond Ricole
Vyse. Spurs were always there or thereabouts in the first half, but the
ball failed to run kindly in the penalty box at the right time.
In the second half, the Spurs girls battled throughout, with again not
much luck in the last third.
The Spurs Player of the Match was Patrizia Leo for a fantastic
performance at right back.

The Spurs Ladies Under-16s
dented Enfield Town's 100% league record on Sunday with a 4-1 victory at
the Walker Ground.
Dee Gilbert opened the scoring for Spurs with less than three minutes
played, but Enfield equalised less than a minute later. It was the
impressive Gilbert who again battled through to put Spurs back ahead
with the match clock not having reached six minutes yet !
The game developed into a tough midfield battle for long periods, but in
the 20th minute, Dee completed her hat-trick after clipping in a low
corner from Leesa Shields.
The second half saw Enfield apply the pressure for a long period with
the whole Spurs side defending superbly. Tottenham increased their
lead to 4-1 when Becky Shepherd pounced on a ball parried out by the
Enfield keeper following a Shields free-kick.
In time add on, Enfield were awarded a penalty, but Ricole Vyse pulled
off a fine save to make the final score 4-1.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "It was a battling performance from start to
finish. I was pleased that the changes made in the midfield
combination worked and really pleased for Dee Gilbert to score a
hat-trick. We now have three forwards scoring regularly, adding
different elements to the team play according to the opposition.
We must match these types of performance every week to move towards the
top of the table in this extremely tight division. The result must
now go in the bag and we move on to play Bedwell Rangers next week who
are another strong side."

In a game of swinging
fortunes, the U16 secured a 2-2 draw against Bedwell Rangers.
Spurs started brightly and were 2-0 at the break through goals from Dee
Gilbert and Alex Small. However, after the break Bedwell game back into
the game and equalised after two defensive errors.
The last ten minutes were nip and tuck with both sides looking for a
winner but the final score remained 2-2.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "After playing some great football in the
opening stages, the first goal from Bedwell seemed to shake the
confidence of the team. The second Bedwell goal opened us through
the centre which has been one of strongest areas in recent weeks.
Bedwell are a never say die team and gave everything in the later
stages. The match again looked like a solid adult fixture and yet
another tough fixture."

The Spurs Ladies Under 16s
disappointingly slipped to a 1-0 away defeat against Southend United in

corner saw Southend score unchallenged in the 63rd minute.

It was just not going to be
the Under 16's day as they were defeated 3-0 by a lively QPR side in the
HCGFL.
With traffic problems on the both the M25 and North Circular, the
majority of the team arrived five minutes before kick-off. It was
no surprise that some sloppy play from the Spurs kick-off saw QPR race
through and score with less than 30 seconds on the clock.
Spurs then steadied themselves and were unlucky not to have drawn level
after two good efforts from Jay Morgan.
In the second half, Spurs were not tight enough down their left hand
side and QPR bagged a further two goals, one which was from the penalty
spot.

League - Under-16 Division 1 |
With seven players either
ill, injured or unavailable, the Under 16s put up a brave performance in
losing 5-2 to Luton Town in the HCGFL on Sunday.
Luton opened the scoring in the first five minutes, but Spurs quickly
found their feet and started to defend well and break on the attack. In
the 22nd minute some neat inter-change work down the Spurs left saw Dee
Gilbert put through to side foot past the Luton goalkeeper.
With just seconds before the break, Luton won a free-kick on the edge of
the Spurs box and caught Spurs cold as they quickly despatched this into
the top corner of the goal.
Spurs continued to battle, but Luton pushed the lead to 4-1 before a
good through ball from Natalie Howard saw Becky Shepherd strike home a
sweet left foot shot to make it 4-2. In the closing minutes, Luton
squeezed home another goal to make the final score 5-2.
Manager Glenn Weaver said, "It was a difficult situation going into the
game with only 10 players but full marks to the girls for their battling
spirit throughout. Sophie Petros had no hesitation in going in
goal and did a great job with her encouragement throughout. Dee Gilbert
turned in yet another strong performance, this time in central midfield.
I was also pleased with Victoria Matthews on her debut for a performance
full of running. We now have three tough games at home and must
use this game as a stepping stone for an improved run."

London Youth FA Under-16 Cup -
Semi-final |
The Under 16s put up a
fantastic performance before losing in the narrowest of margin 1-0 to
Eltham Town FC in the London Youth FA Cup semi-final.
In a game of few chances, it was both the defences that had the upper
hand throughout. However, it was Eltham Town who opened the scoring with
15 minutes to go, heading home from a free kick close to the goal-line.
Spurs continued to battle to the end, despite the loss of Patrizia Leo
and Charlie Archer to injury, but couldn't find that elusive equaliser.
Glenn Weaver said, "Another top game played by two excellent teams with
players that will go on to make great seniors. Spurs battled
fantastically throughout and I am personally proud of every one on
them. Best wishes to Patrizia and Charlie who got injured in this game
and to Ricole who is having a knee scan this week."GLENN
